Being John Mayer is hard work, kids. Beautiful, famous women constantly need to be dated and dumped; double-fisting Grammy awards really starts to tax the biceps; and somebody‘s got to threaten to sodomize all those pesky editors, right?
Sometimes, a man just needs to get stoned. Call up a girl he used to know. Also, according to the new video for “Who Says,” he has to pick up the check:

God he’s dull.
he is just not as great as he used to be. His songs used to be so sweet, so full of tenderness and love. Plus the melodies were waaay better. This has a weak melody, all in all its kind of boring. Plus he kind of comes off as a jerk these days. I’m going to go listen to daughters and forget all about this misstep.
It’s really hard to know what to think about John Mayer. He first came to my attention when he opened up a show for Glen Phillips about a year and a half before the release of “Room for Squares” and I really liked him. I even saw him watching Glen from the back and chatted him up for about 20 minutes. He seemed like a good, normal guy, and I truly wished him great success.
But then, of course, he achieved that success. And fame does weird things to people. Especially in this day and age of too much information– when many celebrities seem to be as much their own enemy as the media. And John Mayer has undoubtedly changed in many negative ways since hitting the “big time.” So he gets harder and harder to like anymore.
On the other hand, he’s still a great musician and songwriter; and I think if he ever decides to concentrate on that instead of on his lifestyle of the rich and famous, he might just be okay again.
I guess only time will tell. But I still wish him the best.
I think it’s a nice, simple song. the melody isn’t hugely complex but it’s memorable, and it actually seems like one of the more personal songs he’s written not just about having his heart broken. the rough around the edges production is a nice change too.
also, i think that with fame comes even more insecurity and loneliness, because even though everyone wants to be around you, the cliche is true, you never know who your friends are. it sounds almost like an apology, or at least a reflection.
