Michael Buble tops the albums chart again; 'New Moon' soundtrack sees strong early sales

Is there any pop-culture entity that’s hotter right now than The Twilight Saga: New Moon? Ladies and gents, there is, and his name is Michael Bublé. The Canadian crooner topped the Billboard 200 albums chart last week with just three days’ sales. This week Bublé has done it again, extending his stay at No. 1 after shifting another 203,000 units in his first full week on shelves, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

That means a No. 2 finish for the New Moon soundtrack, which bows with 115,000 copies sold. But wait! To be fair, the soundtrack was was only on sale for three days of last week after its rush release. Selling 115,000 copies in that compressed period is actually pretty impressive — slightly less than the first Twilight soundtrack sold in its entire first week last year. I hope this heralds many more thousands of teen vampire fanatics who will be listening to Grizzly Bear and St. Vincent by Halloween. (Even so, Bublé sold 17,000 more copies than New Moon in his three-day frame the previous week. Just saying.)

Down at No. 8, the Flaming Lips found 32,000 fans willing to check out the latest dose of their customary weirdness with Embryonic. Mario made it to No. 9 with D.N.A., notching a minutely smaller number that also rounded to 32,000.

That was it for top 20 debuts this week. Another notable sales figure came from the Black Eyed Peas, whose The E.N.D. leaped from No. 23 to No. 6 on this week’s chart with 40,000 in new sales — I guess those omnipresent DirecTV ads starring the Peas, not to mention their new video for “Meet Me Halfway,” must be working. And Owl City‘s Ocean Eyes edged into the top 20 for the first time, taking No. 20 with 21,000 albums sold as the catchy “Fireflies” continues to climb the singles charts.

What do you think of the numbers put up by Bublé, New Moon, and the rest? Any guesses for how many copies the vampire soundtrack will move next week after it’s had a full 7 days in stores? Weigh in below.

The soundtrack is still significantly outselling the Twilight soundtrack.
In the end, all I care about is the quality of the film, not how much money it makes.

Kids are morons – Michael Buble has always had talent but slap “Twilight” or any other crappy flavor of the moment and his sales take off. I thought he works with David Foster, a guy who is supposed to be looking for integrity and quality for his artists. I hope the same crap does not happen with Renee Olstead, DONT SELL OUT RENEE, LEAVE THIS TEENY BOPPER CRAP TO TAYLOR SWIFT or MILEY or any other overrated hack.

      • DW

What the heck are you talking about? Michael Buble is not on the New Moon soundtrack.

  • C

I have no plans to buy the soundtrack before I see the movie – it almost ruins some of the effect otherwise.

  • Mells

The new Michael Buble album is fantastic. I bought the Twilight soundtrack album prior to the movie’s release last time but this time I think I will wait until the movie comes out.

  • Sia

New Moon was leaked and I know so many teens who downloaded it illegally which sucks. I loved the new soundtrack and I plan on buying it after the movie but your comparing an artist who does this for a living and a movie soundtrack which is suppose to sell more after the movie right ?

  • alex

    Buble!!! He’s awesome.

  • Kelsey

This actually doesn’t surprise me. As Sia said, a LOT of people got the album early when it leaked, and they’re the demographic who’d be more likely to buy the album.
I got the DCFC single and have all the other non-exclusive songs on the album already. So unless one of the other film-exclusive songs catches my ear, I probably won’t buy it, either.

Did anybody else think Buble’s version of Cry Me a River was an audition to do a Bond theme?

    • Kyra

Yes, yes! That overture at the beginning and the entire orchestration is 100% Bond. I’m glad someone else thought so.

  • cred

Most of the soundtrack was awful – and that comes from a very devoted fan. Alexandre Desplat’s New Moon was the salvation of the entire CD. You won’t waste your money if you buy it only for that song.

    • Sarah

I totally disagree. I love Rosyln, Possibility, No Sound But the Wind, and Satellite Heart.

    • Alyssa

OK, you obviously don’t know anything about music. While the movies are not very good, the New Moon soundtrack is phenomenal. Bon Iver, St. Vincent, Death Cab for Cutie, and Grizzly Bear all on one album? That is pretty fantastic.

Simon…The Black Eyed Peas disc jumped back into the top 10 again cause itunes had it selling for $7.99 all last week. In the process, they got “Meet me Halfway” to #2 on the itunes sales chart, meaning that the song should prolly jump into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 tomorrow. I’m not a MySpace fan, nor have I ever been, but CONGRATS to Owl City ! Who knew in this day & age an unknown artist that didn’t feature Kanye West or Lil Wayne on a single could still blow up overnight?! Although, it would be kinda funny if Owl City’s record label issued a remix of “Fireflies” with label-mate Lil Wayne…hehe

  • SUX

    These movies suck.

  • Krista

Like everyone else has already mention, there was a huge leak and a lot of people got the album then. In my opinion, that’s why Summit pushed up the release date.

  • Amanda

i LOVE michael buble’s new album!!! “Haven’t Met You Yet” is a great catchy tune and I have listened to it every day since I bought the album. And he is looking GOOOOOD lately!

  • Sara

ugh… Teenybopper Cd. Michael is way better.

    • Heather

Sara, the New Moon Soundtrack is not really a “Teenybopper Cd”. It’s a compilation of many indie bands that are not really popular with the teen demographic. I doubt that many sixteen year-olds are familiar with Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, or Lykke Li.

I doubt that you actually bought the album and listened to it, so don’t go around saying Michael Bublé’s CD is better when you haven’t given the New Moon soundtrack a chance.

      • Tracey

To be fair, I very much doubt people who are actually into any of those bands will be buying this soundtrack (the reaction from the indieworld has been largely horror that their idols would sell out in such a fashion). Since almost no one but teenyboppers (and Twi-moms) will buy the New Moon soundtrack, and since they’re not doing it for the music but for the Twilightitude of it all, I think Sara’s point still stands.

  • jon

I havent even see this Twilight movie or have any interests in it. I think the whole thing is wack.

Only expected this from EW you’ve been complaining about the lack of sales of other artists but this is Twilight don’t wanna make the fans mad…psssh the album will get a huge sales boost when the film come ‘s out no need to tell us anything else…
