Coming soon to 'Glee': Van Halen, John Lennon, and more!

Glee-cast-dumpster_dlWhile we won’t be seeing a new Glee episode until Nov. 11 due to Fox’s coverage of the World Series, we have a peek at some of the cover tunes you’ll be hearing in upcoming episodes. The Nov. 11 episode “Wheels” features a soaring “diva-off” between Rachel (Lea Michele) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) over Wicked‘s “Defying Gravity”—be prepared to get misty. Also, Artie (Kevin McHale) and the club do a wheelchair number set to Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary.” In the coming weeks, look for group versions of Van Halen’s “Jump” and John Lennon’s “Imagine,” which the glee club performs with a rival deaf choir. Says co-creator Ryan Murphy, “Everyone who sees it sheds a tear.” Also, Finn (Cory Monteith) does Paul Anka’s “You’re Having My Baby” and Rachel will tackle the Barbara Streisand/Funny Girl classic “Don’t Rain on My Parade”. “It was my dream and I could not believe that I got to do that song,” says Michele.

Lea is going to knock it out of the park with “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” And forget about it with “Defying Gravity.” That’s going to have a permanent spot on my DVR.

    • Chappel

Yeah… Lea singing Streisand. That’s something I definitely want to hear. And Proud Mary (big wheels keep on rollin’) sounds like ti has some great visual potential. I love this show.

I second the “Defying Gravity”/”Don’t Rain On My Parade” excitement! I love both those songs and I love Lea Michele so I can barely wait!

This article was like a dream come true. As a huge John Lennon fan, I am so excited to see the group perform Imagine. Especially since everywhere I turn lately his songs are being whored out to awful commercials. I am also a huge Broadway nerd (as I’m sure many Gleeks are) so I am beyond excited for Defying Gravity!

    November 11th HURRY!!!

    • Chichi

I love Glee but this show is starting to grate on my nerves with them always giving the killer material to Rachel and Finn. It’s a dang ENSEMBLE!

      • Ben

Yup I totally agree on that. Hmmp.

      • EZ

Absolutely – I loved Puck’s voice when he sang Sweet Caroline. Give him some more solos! And while we’re at it, can Will back down a little bit too?

      • Maiv

Yeah, I got so pissed every time Will automatically turns to Rachel and Finn to sing the leads, especially in the trailer for the Wicked song where he just turns to her. Ugh!

  • Louise

WOW. As a somewhat lukewarm Glee fan, I am so excited for November 11!!!

  • Shana

the best Imagine cover I’ve ever heard was David Archuleta. Wonder if Glee will be just as good? Looking forward to Proud Mary. And Lea will do well with Streisand

    • EZ

Boo. I know this isn’t an American Idol comment board, but there are other good versions of that song. That is all.

  • Shana

p.s. when do the sneak peaks start pouring in? hahah if we can’t have the actual thing for a couple of weeks get us some teasers EW!

I’ve been looking forward to “Defying Gravity” for weeks now. The only thing to make this season great is to have Idina Menzel make a guest appearance (either as herself or a character) and her turn out to be Rachel’s biological mother. It would only be the best thing in the world!

    • kiblerfaeri

OMG yes!!! That would be such a fabulous idea! My sister and I have thought since the pilot that Lea’s like an Idini Menzel mini-me. She bears quite a striking resemblance and her vocal chops can definitely take on “Defying Gravity”. Now can we get some Rent songs too? Maybe a cast rendition of “La Vie Boheme”?

      • Jennifer

Hold on a minute, kiblerfaeri. They would have to leave out some lines in La Vie Boheme or risk getting in trouble with the FCC. I do agree with you about Lea and Idina, but I think they are a little too close in age to be mother and daughter. Then again, when makeup is involved, I could be proven wrong.

  • Amy

    John Lennon – Thumbs Up

Paul Anka – Thumbs Down – I hated that song when it first came out! YUCK!

    May I order some renditions:
    * A doo-wop rendition of Fantasia Burrino’s “When I see you”, or Jagged Edge’s “I gotta be” both by Mr Shue, Finn and Puck.
    * New Edition’s “Cool It Now” or “Can you stand the rain”; Kurt singing Ralph Tresvant’s parts
    * Little Mermaid’s “Part of your world” by Kevin “Artie” McHale
*Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative” or “That’s the way love is” by Puckerman.
    * Cindy Lauper’s “Girls just wanna have fun” by Tina
*Boyz II Men’s “End of the road” or “MotownPhilly” by the boys
    * TLC’s “What about your friends” by the glee cast
    Thank you, Mr Murphy!

I reallllly NEED someone on this show to sing “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie! How awesome would that be?
