CMJ Music Fest: Indie's 'next big thing' bands do NYC

CMJ’s Music Marathon wrapped up late this Saturday night, marking a soggy end to a thrilling week that featured hundreds of up-and-coming indie bands playing the New York City concert circuit.

Britain’s minimalist pop quartet the xx were the reigning buzz champions of the festival, and their live shows did nothing to quell the fervor surrounding them. This group of lovelorn 20-year-olds specializes in a quiet brand of pop that eschews typical indie sonics in favor of quiet storm R&B production sheen. The co-ed lead vocalists— Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim—straddle the line between lo-fi breathiness and Top-40 soul.

In spite of the softness of their music, the xx’s unexpectedly gorgeous genre-alchemy is one of the more exciting things on the scene today and audience reactions backed this up: the crowd’s whoops of approval easily exceeded the volume of anything on stage. Check out some fan footage of the xx playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg below (as well as more CMJ coverage after the jump):

Katy Perry gets hosed for 3OH!3 in 'Starstrukk' video

Colorado’s divisive joke-hop jesters 3Oh!3, they of a still-flaming March post here on the Music Mix, apparently do in fact trust a ho; they’ve allowed a real live female — multiplatinum pop tartlet Katy Perry — to talk with more than her hips in the new video for their remixed “Starstrukk.”

Then again, it’s still 3OH!3, so Perry delivers her solo while being hosed down a la livestock at the county fair, while anonymous girls hurtle themselves forward like deranged Aberzombies, mindlessly hunting fresh man-meat. Somehow, frolicking in a fountain seemed a lot less degrading when the Go-Gos did it:

It’s Monday and I’m old, Music Mixers, so tell me: Just dumb, fun entertainment, yes? Or somewhere between locusts and flood in the lead-up to this?

Them Crooked Vultures: Hear the supergroup's first single now

The Dave Grohl-Josh Homme-John Paul Jones supergroup Them Crooked Vultures has just unleashed the band’s debut single “New Fang,” which you can hear below. And “unleashed” seems the right word for this crunchily rocking number which, Homme’s vocals aside, sounds like something Jones’ former band Led Zeppelin could have recorded for Physical Graffiti, and then misplaced down the back of the studio couch.

Do you agree? And are you excited about the Vultures’ debut album, which arrives November 17?

U2's YouTube concert: Did you watch?

Categories: U2

Last night, U2 played to 96,000 fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. At the same time, they were playing to who knows how many more people around the world who tuned in for a live stream of the full show on YouTube. Pretty cool, right?

The stream is down now, but a message posted at U2′s YouTube hub — say that five times fast! — promises that it will all be available for encore viewing “soon.” And while I’m sure a YouTube stream can’t compare to an in-person performance, or even to a high-res TV simulcast, it still seems like a promising option. I know there have been lots of shows over the years that I’ve been unable to attend due to scheduling or location issues, and that I’d have loved to watch online. That goes double if YouTube would let me see a show the next morning. (Case in point: I, personally, was unable to tune in last night because I was watching the Yankees win the pennant.)

Did any of you catch U2′s show on YouTube? Or do you plan to watch it later? Let us know how the whole YouTube concert thing worked out for you — and make all the U2-YouTube puns that you can think of — in the comments below. And hey, if you’re really dying to see U2 in the flesh, you can try and make it to one of the new North American shows they’ve just announced for 2010

Metallica assists in search for missing concertgoer

Categories: Metallica

Metallica is assisting in the search for missing fan Morgan Harrington, 20, who was last seen at an Oct. 17 Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Va. The band has added $50,000 to the reward fund for information on Harrington’s disappearance. The Associated Press reports that police have found “no major leads” so far in their search for Harrington, a Virginia Tech student. Photos of Harrington and more details can be found at Metallica’s official site, which includes the following request: “…if you or anyone you know shot video footage or took photos of the concert or audience, please check to see if there is anyone in your photos who might resemble Morgan.”

Leonard Cohen at Madison Square Garden: The master at 75

Last night, about a month after his 75th birthday, Leonard Cohen packed NYC’s Madison Square Garden to the rafters. Earlier in the week, he’d released Live at the Isle of Wight 1970, a CD/DVD package documenting a festival set he played when he was just shy of 36. And here’s the thing: Ask me which of the two performances was more compelling, more full of life, more can’t-look-away transcendent, and…I’ll have to get back to you on that.

Sure, Cohen had a certain bright-burning intensity 39 years ago. He waited til after 2 A.M. to go on stage in 1970, which I imagine he wouldn’t be as happy to do today. His voice could hit a few more high notes back then. But that’s about all the obvious advantage that young Cohen has over old Cohen.

Joss Stone: Did her label make her change her provocative album-cover art?

Categories: Cover Art, Joss Stone

Joss Stone has been using a provocative image to promote her fourth album, Colour Me Free. The black-and-white shot of the British singer contorted behind prison bars, midway through being penciled in color-by-numbers style (top left), appears on her MySpace page and her official website, and it’s the one that was provided to EW to accompany our review of the album. Yet pick up the CD at exclusive physical retailer Target or download a copy from iTunes and you’ll see very different cover art (top right): just Stone’s name in a large font above the album title on an otherwise blank purple background. What gives?
