Jason Derulo, 'Watcha Say': Watch the new video here

Categories: New Stuff, Video Gaga

Back in August, we asked Music Mix readers what they thought of Jason DeRulo’s “Watcha Say,” and its heavy sampling of British songstress Imogen Heap’s 2005 sleeper hit “Hide and Seek.”

Since then, the song has gone massive, hitting no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no. 3 on iTunes — even though Derulo’s album won’t be out until next year (even his Myspace page contains only one track besides “Say.” And now, a new piece of the “Watcha” puzzle: an official video, so full of feelings! And stairwells!

Watcha it below, and tell us what you think:

Katy Perry and Weezer's Rivers Cuomo: music's new odd couple

Categories: Katy Perry, Weezer

Her heart may belong to Russell, but Katy Perry’s studio time goes to Rivers. Weezer frontman Cuomo announced recently in a buzznet interview that he’s gearing up for a collaboration with the girl-kissing, Vegas-loving pop tartlet: “We’re writing together next week. Can’t wait!”

Weezer’s upcoming November 3 release Raditude is, of course, already in the can, so whatever the fruits of their labor (and as we all know,  Perry hearts fruit), they’ll probably end up on her next album. And Rad already has a host of its own collabs, including Lil Wayne and members of All-American Rejects.

Who else would you like to see pair up in the pop and rock worlds, Music Mixers? Kelly Clarkson and her beloved Kings of Leon? Jack White and his Nashville neighbor Taylor Swift?

Garth Brooks un-retires from the music biz, readies Vegas run

According to a report today in Reuters, country superstar Garth Brooks is abandoning his self-enforced nine-year retirement (barring occasional appearances between 2005 and 2007, and a lucrative Wal-Mart deal ) and reportedly preparing a sixteen-week concert run, most likely at Las Vegas’s Wynn Casino.

“I know this is a young industry,” he told gathered press in Nashville today, “so I’m not sure I’ll be welcomed back but, if the fans want me, I still want to pursue my music.” Brooks, who has sold some 123 million records, is  the top-selling American artist of all time, second only to the Beatles’ 170 million.

What do you think, readers — did absence make your hearts grow even fonder, or does it feel like he never really left? How do you think his return will hold up to the comebacks of other “retirees” like Cher, Barbra Streisand and Jay-Z?

Allison Iraheta on new track titles, songs about abusive boyfriends, and trouble with Twitter

Allison-Iraheta-Idol_l

Allison Iraheta is ready to rock — figuratively and literally. American Idol‘s season 8 third runner-up is slated to release her debut album Dec. 1 via 19 Recordings/Jive, and from the sounds of it, the record will have even more grit and grime than her radio-ready lead single “Friday I’ll Be Over U,” which was leaked to the Web last week. I recently caught up with Iraheta via phone to talk to her about her lack of conversational self-editing, her time in the studio with hitmaker Max Martin (“Since U Been Gone,” “Oops!…I Did It Again”) and her favorite songs from her post-Idol recording sessions. Read on…and to get alerts on all my Idol coverage, follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak!

So let’s talk about “Friday I’ll Be Over U.” It’s got a rock edge to it, but it’s definitely poppy. Was this a strategic move on your part, an attempt to get radio to give you a shot?
That song, the first time I heard it, I loved it. And I was thinking, yeah, it might have a little bit of the pop sound to it, but I don’t mind that at all. I can definitely do harder than this, and I’m gonna. But I thought for a first single, “Friday I’ll Be Over U,” we all agreed would be something that would get people’s attention. You’ve got to get in that door. Know what I mean?

What about fans who complained the song doesn’t rock hard enough? What would you say to them?
There’s more to come. And as a first single, I think “Friday I’ll Be Over U” is pretty damn awesome, and a perfect choice. Because [adopts robot voice] In the music business I’m assuming you’re supposed to grab the attention of all audiences so you can get sales and whatnot, blah blah blah. For the album, there’s some harder stuff I’m really excited about, but I’m pretty damn happy with “Friday I’ll Be Over U.”

What was it like working with Max Martin on the single? He’s produced more hits for more artists than we can even begin to get into…
He’s amazing. And he don’t play! He’s definitely like “We’re gonna do this like this.” But he’s such an amazing person. And there’s a way he transmits energy, he knows how to tell you how to do things without making it awkward and whatnot.

Tell me about one of the other songs you’ve recorded that you love.
There’s a “Beat Me Up” out there. It’s pretty damn amazing.

Did you say “Beat Me Up”? What?
Yeah, yeah, I said “Beat Me Up.” That’s the name of the song.

Who’s responsible for this?
It’s a Kevin Rudolf song.

What’s it about? What’s the subject?
Subject: “Beat Me Up.” Hmmm. [Laughs.] It’s a pretty rad song. This chick likes being mistreated by her guy. A lot of girls out there, they like that! And it’s kind of sad, but y’know, that’s just the way she is. Not that I’m like that because I’d beat the hell out of whoever the hell mistreats me! I put myself in another girl’s shoes, so it’s a pretty cool song.

Steve Martin wants you and your dog to make a music video

What’s up with musicians and dogs this week? Yesterday we found out Ryan Gosling is using his balloon-hungry hound to promote his indie band’s tour, and now Steve Martin enters the celebrity-canine-music marketing triangle with a contest challenging fans to make a video for one of the songs off his latest bluegrass album The Crow: New Songs for the Five-String Banjo.

Martin—who has been playing the banjo for over 40 years—wants you to film an amateur music video starring your pup(s) set to his song “Wally on the Run,” an instrumental hoedown he wrote in honor of his furry labrador friend Wally. Whoever he decides has the best video gets 1000 clams and the respect of the mutt-loving, banjo-pickin’ community. Check out this one-of-a-kind offer after the jump:

Jim Morrison's ghost photograph is 'not fake.' REALLY???

There aren’t many headlines that make me declare “Say whaaat?” while doing a loud but poor impression of Scooby Doo. And my co-workers are grateful for that. But I definitely had a “Ray rhaaat?” moment when I came across this headline in British newspaper The Daily Express: RESEARCHERS CLAIM JIM MORRISON’S GHOST PICTURE IS NOT A FAKE.

Does this mean there really is proof of an after life of some sort? What will this mean for religion? For humanity? For DVD sales of The Doors?

This bizarre, and conceivably life-as-we-know-it-changing, tale hinges around a writer named Brett Meisner. In 1997, Meisner’s assistant took a photograph of him at Morrison’s grave in Paris. Five years later Mesiner looked at the picture (wow, his developing place is sloooow) and noticed a ghostly figure in the background which resembled Morrison. (The young, thin, Morrison. Not the slightly-less-young, much fatter version. Hey, even ghosts like to look good, you know!)

The photograph is one of the images to be found in a new book called Ghosts Caught On Film 2: Photographs of the Unexplained. The Express story states that, according to “researchers,” the apparition in the photograph is not a trick of the light and they’ve also ruled out the possibility that the image has been manipulated. Good for them. But, frankly, I’m not going to be convinced that Morrison is really lighting a fire around his grave until some paranormal researchers I trust (like Dan Aykroyd, or even Bill Murray) say it’s so.

But what say you? Do you think Morrison’s ghost is alive and well (or, at least, well)? Have you ever seen the ghost of a rock star? Am I risking a visit from the Lizard King himself by making fun of this whole thing? Let us know!

Leona Lewis 'punched' at book signing

Transatlantic chart-topping singer Leona Lewis was assaulted at a book signing in London, reports the BBC.

Lewis had been signing copies of her new autobiography when the incident happened. A witness told the BBC the alleged attacker “walked up there with the book, she signed it, and as she looked up he just punched her.”

The “Bleeding Love” singer ran out of the room covering her eye while security dragged the man out of the bookstore, who, according to another eyewitness, “Was just laughing—he thought it was funny.”

Lewis did not require hospital treatment, but her spokesman said the X-Factor winner was “understandably badly shaken.”

What do you make of this weird incident?

Rihanna's new album: What can we expect?

Last night Rihanna tweeted to her fans (and EW confirmed) that November 23 will see the release of her first album since 2007’s R&B smash Good Girl Gone Bad. In her words: “The wait is ova.”

So once we get ova the wait, what kind of album can we expect to hear? We know Justin Timberlake—who worked with her on “Rehab”—is a producer on her new record, and it looks like their collaboration has been fruitful if their supposedly cozy public behavior is any indication.

Timberlake talked about RiRi’s new album at the Emmys: “It’s a little more grown up. It’s got some edge to it.” Also collaborating with her are Drake, Ne-Yo, Akon, and even one of the All-American Rejects.

Any surprise guests? Well, after they gelled so well on “Run This Town,” we wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out Jay-Z or Kanye stopped by the studio at some point to spit a verse for her still-unnamed album.

And when we talked to fellow Caribbean sensation Sean Kingston a few weeks ago, he mentioned he had submitted three songs for Rihanna’s new disc, telling us, “Everybody liked the songs, so we’ll see where it goes.”

Who else would you love to see taking a bow with Rihanna on her latest record? Any of the existing collabs strike you as weird? And do you think she can top the ubiquitous smash that was “Umbrella”?

Michael Buble triumphs over Kiss army to top charts

Categories: Charts, KISS, Michael Buble

Michael-Buble_lSinger Michael Bublé does not wear outlandish makeup onstage. Nor does he boast a notably large tongue (as far as I know, anyway). But that didn’t stop the singer besting Kiss in this week’s chart war. Bublé grabbed pole position on the Billboard 200 chart with his album Crazy Love, which sold 132,000 copies, despite the CD only being on sale for three days. (The collection’s release was pushed up to last Friday, in all likelihood to capitalize on his Oprah appearance.) But don’t cry, Kiss! That would make a dreadful mess. Also, your Sonic Boom did hit the No. 2 spot, by shifting 108,000 copies, which makes it the quartet’s highest charting album ever. Rounding out the top three was Toby Keith’s new opus American Ride, which sold 90,000 while the Backstreet Boys snagged their seventh consecutive top 10 album thanks to the 42,000 sales and No. 9 placing of This Is Us.

Are you a fan of Bublé? Or of Kiss? And if you’re a follower of both, we would really like to hear from you.
