I love her and her taste in music! Solange has turned me on to so many different artists because she is so open about the artists she digs. Have you heard her cover of Viva La Vida?? Its genius!!

True. Sorry if I sounded severe. My qualms are with the industry and obviously not you . A David Guetta appearance would have been a wise move, but for my own personal reasons, I like the direction she is taking. I’ve always been a bit of an oddball loving R&B and indie rock as my two favorite genres, so I get excited at the prospect of an artist that can bridge that gap. Obviously everyone wants hits, but I just think that it’s funny that modest record sales are good for groups like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs or The Shins, but if a like-minded R&B artist posts the same numbers, it is seen as a failure. To me, R&B has always been pretty cannibalistic. Fans always battle other fans on behalf of their artists because when it comes down to it, there are a limited number of spots for successful artists. I want Solange to get away from it.

Fatima…not that she is anywhere near the same vocal range as Deborah Cox, but this is whats wrong with R&B singers that aren’t typical R&B…Deborah Cox has had so many dance hits from remixed versions of her songs, and yet has never put out a proper dance album, because she doesn’t want to be ‘pigeonholed’ as a dance diva, regrdless of whether people buying her dance remixes are her bread & butter. My point? Solange has had 3 dance hits off this last album, “I Decided”, “Sandcastle Disco”, & “Would’ve Been The One” but do you think she’d even entertain the idea of putting a dance album out ? HELL NO. Thats why I said, she shoulda hopped on the David Guetta album. I mean, if you’re having dance hits, keep the ball rolling…Covering indie rock songs that no one will ever hear isn’t helping her cause.

and yes, I know Solange was on Universal and had a promotional push. But for the future, I think she’s not courting a major audience. But if you’re not a white indie rock band, you’re not allowed to sell modestly.

A) This isn’t a single. She’s not trying to get to radio on this one. It was just something she wanted to do and as far as she’s mentioned now, it’s not appearing on an album
B) I honestly don’t think she’s in the same genre as Beyonce. People have a million names for types of rock, but they can’t diversify the big difference in the Knowles sisters’ sounds? Solange went retro on the last album and is now going further into alternative soul for the next. I’ve never thought to compare their latest albums.
C) Which leads me to my other beef: Underground music is celebrated with rock, but anytime there is an urban artist on an indie label that doesn’t sell over 100,000 copies people label them a flop. The way Solange’s sound is going, I think she’s expecting a smaller audience and not a 4 million selling disc. No one calls Dirty Projectors a flop.

Solange shoulda jumped ship with Kelly Rowland and tried to get on the David Guetta album. “Sexy Bitch” may FINALLY go top top on the Billboard Hot 100 next week (currently #12) and the new video for the title track “One Love” with Estelle should keep David’s stateside success going. (The video debuted on YouTube yesterday…its pretty awesome). Solange will never excel in the same genre as Beyonce…It sucks, its just not a level playing field, so eventhough this is an indie track with a hip-hop beat (famous sample) it’s just not going to be an Urban hit for Solange. Hell, even when she did a track with Lil Wayne last Fall, it was only released as a separate single on iTunes, and never even worked to radio…She just has to think outside the box. Its her sister’s Sand(box)Castle…she just lets her dance to the Disco in it!

Actually the sample is from Issac Hayes’ “Bumpy Lament.” A good look for Dre,Badu and Solange if you ask me.
