Mariah Carey's 'I Want to Know What Love Is' video: Play ball!

Generally, the only time I use the words “sports” and “Mariah Carey” in the same sentence is when I’m asking someone to turn down the former so I can listen to the latter. But Mimi’s new video for her cover of Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is (the second vid off her new album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel) brings the two together with interesting—if not exactly harmonious—results.

The CG-heavy clip takes place in an anonymous baseball diamond, where a particularly lanky-looking Mariah sings into an old-school mic atop a giant butterfly emblem in the field. (Did someone decide the pitcher’s mound would be too butch?) This is intercut with shots of couples—lovers, families, friends—admiring her with reverent, slo-mo gazes. Then more Mariah, then an out-of-nowhere gospel choir (Why ask why?), a couple high notes, and…. fade out.

Huh. I was kind of hoping MC would work the baseball angle a little more, but I guess fielding a fly ball might put her nails in danger. And those thigh-high boots aren’t made for walking, let alone running the bases. Oh well. Check out the video below and let us know what you think: Home run? Foul ball? Foot fault? No, wait. That’s tennis, right?

Mariah sucks…lets face it…all she ever had was her voice and obviously lost that….give it up

    • paige

      right on brother

    • D. Lu

You guys must be deaf if you think Mariah has lost her voice.

  • marylynn

I’m surprised I like it. she’s got one of the best voices out there when she’s actually singing and not what she has been doing.

    • Sally in Chicago

I agree, when she sings she can sing. But this video does nothing for me. I’m sure they’ll recut it — if it doesn’t cost much money.

She waited too long to release this clip. The song is ONLY a hit on adult contemporary radio. Top 40 all but ignored the song, and its numerous dance remixes. And she is already back in the hip-hop playing field with a remix of “H.A.T.E.U.” Featuring OJ Da Juiceman, Big Boi of OutkAst and Gucci Mane again. She NEVER EVER uses the same rapper twice, so kinda surprised to see Gucci on another remix from the same album since he was on “Obsessed”. Nick Cannon must be a HUGE fan. Wonder what she thinks of Gucci going back to jail…but then again, she was friends with Ol’ Dirty Bastard…

I think that top 40 radio isn’t all into remakes of ’80s power ballads right now. They’re too caught up in a mix of Auto-tuned pop, R&B and hip-hop songs some and the usual midtempo rock songs.Obsessed came too late but they didn’t want too many similar Christopher Stewart/The Dream produced songs at the same time or something with the similar sound. They like to block certain songs that are very artistic and chance taking from playing in main music lineups.

luilaiucw on August 30, 2011 i like my personality, because i am a really happy person and i love to smile and make other people smile with me , kisses from Perú love youu

While I have always appreciated Mariah’s vocal talent, she managed to ruin one of the best ballads ever written. Lou Gramm of Foreigner sung it with such power and emotion. Mariah sung it with vocal gymnastics and zippo emotion.

  • Kalie

I like her version of this song. I guess nothing is ever as good as the original, but this version is very pretty.

Mariah Carey hasn’t been good since the mid 90’s. Ever since she released Butterfly she’s gone downhill.

    • wakeforce

Many people liked Mariah better when she sounded less (there’s no easy way to say this) “black”. Though they won’t admit that!

      • fancypants

but then how do you explain Beyonce? she’s black, sounds black (i mean, diva, video phone, etc), and is a huge mainstream artist. i think people just preferred mariah when she wasn’t doing that weird breathy/throaty type of singing for an entire song. it’s fine in small doses, but for an entire song (like Migrate), it’s just underwhelming and makes you miss Mariah’s full voice, IMO.

I think many people liked Mariah when she did those big slick Vision Of Love type ballads or any floorwax-type slick pop ballads she did with Walter Afanasieff in the ’90s. But she shifted to more urban songs with hip-hop beats and people went for that as well. She likes to do collaborations with rappers but for this new album she didn’t have any on it.

  • Kalie

“Butterfly” was actually one of her best albums and so was “The Emancipation of Mimi”, which earned her a few Grammys.

    • marylynn

Emancipation of Mimi is one of her best cds. It was also her big comeback.

  • Carrie Ann

I like this song, but I’m glad she’s releasing “H.A.T.E.U.” as her next single. It has the title of a rap song, but it’s a very pretty slow jam. Definitely one of the best songs on her new album.

  • Nick T

Those guys that met her on Oprah are there! I’ve seen like five eps of Oprah ever and that just happened to be one. Yay, I’m in the know on pop culture!

    • Negrito

Puking while dniivrg, holy crap that's gross. I really hope things get better soon.

  • AK

I’m really surprised, but I actually like it.

    • Hessa

Mariah Carey is rllaey pretty, and down to earth. I have like 4 magazines about her and Nick.

  • Wendy

I think this is a lovely remake and I like the concept of the video.

  • Sally in Chicago

The choir killed it for me. Can’t she do anything without a big a** choir behind her?

  • Una

She’s rocking her early-90s hair in this clip. The choir’s not completely “out of nowhere;” didn’t the original version have a choir in the background at the end, too?

  • Bill

This clip makes no sense, except as Mariah’s audition tape for halftime at the Super Bowl.

  • jess

Uhh, its not an anonymous baseball diamond. It says Yankee Stadium in the background around :59.
Well it just says “nkee Stadium” but I’m assuming that it means Yankee Stadium:)
