Bob Dylan's 'Must Be Santa': New Christmas classic, or 'Animaniacs' homage?

So, while reveling in the supreme weirdness that is Bob Dylan’s “Must Be Santa” — the video is non-embeddable, but you can watch it if you click on these pretty colored words right here — we somehow managed to overlook the creepy basement rec room and the fact that Dylan has decided to start sporting “The Rachel,” and instead focused in on one peculiar fact: Uh, why does this old Hal Moore and Bill Fredricks carol suddenly sound like an Animaniacs song?

Here is Dylan’s take on “Must Be Santa”:

Here is the International Friendship Song, a.k.a. “Schnitzelbank,” from Animaniacs:

What do you think, Mixers? Did the folks behind Animaniacs totally rip off this Christmas chestnut and we didn’t notice until now, or is it just the crazy-making tempo that sounds so similar? You tell us in the comments. And: Which do you like better? (Me, I’m going Wakko.)

    Hahahaha that is awesome

Hmm…unless the band Brave Combo has collaborated with Dylan on this track, I say that he has ripped them off. If you search for “Must Be Santa” by Brave Combo, this is an EXACT duplicate, except for the occasional Dylan vocal thrown over the top of it. I’ve always loved the Brave Combo version, and seeing this “Dylan” version is just a little bit…creepy. I did like the naming of presidents instead of the 8 reindeer, though.

Never heard this children’s song done as a polka. It’s an old song that I first heard on the Mitch Miller tv show. I taught it to my students for 30 years. Walt is right, the Dylan (and I love me some Dylan!)version is creepy.

Yes, great version of this song, but what is up with Dylan’s hair? Just sayin’.

the Schnitzelbank song dates back to Groucho Marx when the Marx Bros. were on a promo tour for A Night at the Opera (it’s a song they did back in vaudeville in the 1910s). I think he sang it on You Bet Your Life once.

Dylan even sounds a bit like Wakko.

They’re just both German folk songs. Its an inherently ridiculous form of music.

YES! I’m all about the international friendship song!
