I think Kris’s music is like him .. low-key and laid back. Think of people like Jason Mraz and John Mayer, and how it took them awhile to achieve “mainstream” success.

I do think his CD is a little over-produced for his musical personality, tho. It’s a strong effort, but not a breakthrough like Daughtry’s first CD.

If he plays his cards right, he’ll do fine in the long run.

    • mishka

Actually John Mayer or Jason Mraz paved their own way to mainstream they didn’t win Idol at their first attempt.
The stage is crowded up there, if you have been given a shot, you better work your as* to succeed. When girls just need to sing pretty and being attractive, guys needs charisma, self confidence and hotness to make it work. John Mayer is charismatic, Jason Mraz too. Daughtry may be married like Kris but see him working that hotness of his. Kris is a good looking guy; too bad he doesn’t take advantage of that to steal the show.

  • Julie E.

You answered your own question: he’s not selling as well as he could have because the entertainment media have lavished drooling attention on Adam Lambert and, for the most part, ignored Kris. Kris can appear on as many talk shows as he wants, but if the media keeps ignoring him and giving cover stories to Adam, naturally Adam is going to sell more albums.
I knew this was going to happen, by the way–the mainstream media gives over the top attention to Adam and very little to Kris, and then wonders why Kris doesn’t sell as well, as if they’re not complicit. I just didn’t think Michael Slezak would be the first one to pull these shenanigans.

    • D

      Don’t get your Slezak comment.

  • itsme

Gavin: Adam’s cd is great really great…and Adam acknowledged the AMA vocal problem, whatever, know one cares about Kris anyway..so adam wins again and the love it or hate aspect to Adam is part of the appeal…I repeat, Adam’s cd is great!!! Music Again is sick

    • AJ

Agreed! Adam appeals to most people because he is out there and is not like any other artist around now. America is probably getting tired of “boring” and wants some “spice.” Adam offers the spice.

      • Erin

speak for yourself… If Adam appealed to “most people”, then he would’ve not only won American Idol, but he would never have been in the Bottom 2 during Idol either, and so many people wouldn’t be commenting on how bad his performance was at the AMAs… even people who were big fans of him during the show were disgusted with his poor vocal performance and tasteless stage performance…

  • Thaxton

During promotion over the past two weeks, kris has looked sloppy. Remember when he was on Idol and wore tight jeans that showed off his ass? Lately he looks like a Nirvana reject.

    • Rodrigo.

Yes, he needs to show off that sweet ass a bit more. I’d buy his album.

  • dee

Also, how come no one is freaking about One Republic’s placement?

    • Phil

Since you’ve asked twice now, OneRepublic debuted at #19. The reason is wasn’t mentioned on leah’s round up is because I assume she read the quick run down omn Billboard.com that also fails to mention OneRepublic’s placement. Again, this isn’t shocking since they currently have no real radio support for “All The Right Moves”. The single is still building, and I am shocked they actually didn’t push the release date back. Ryan & the guys are actually a great group of guys who I’ve met a few timnes, and it would be nice to see their sophomore disc hit, but the real hit is “Secrets”, not so sold on that first single myself.

      • Bren

        Secrets is a good song.

      • Jenny

Ryan and the guys sucks! I’m sick of Ryan, all his songs sounds the same! I know 3 songs that sounds just like Halo.

    • Katie

Because……..OneRepublic didn’t just come off a program with 30 million viewers weekly.

Nor did OR have dozens of rabid fans on EW exclaiming how well Kris was going to do (when he ended up flopping)

      • Mark

        But, again, established musical acts.

      • freddy

        DRONE – ADAMFEMBOT

      • lauren

True, but One Republic had a massive hit in “Apologize” and Ryan Tedder has been all over the media of late because he has written a bunch of hit songs for other artists. So it’s not like the public didn’t know who One Republic is. They sold 80K their 1st week the last time around — so basically their 1st week sales dropped by one half this time around. The same type of thing happened with 50 Cent, Norah Jones, etc — basically EVERYONE’s 1st week sales are down bigtime from what they sold with their previous album.

      • Phil

@lauren: As I already stated, OneRepublic’s current single isn’t getting much radio support, like Kris. No pop station is playing a Norah Jones single, and very few pop stations have started to spin 50 Cent’s new single, “Baby By Me”, though I do believe that is a hit, and will find a home at top 40 stations in the coming weeks. It doesn’t matter what an artist has done in the past if their current work isn’t getting the proper set up & support, no matter what you think. I said 2 weeks ago in a Music Mix item about the new Timbaland single “Morning After DarK’, that no one is playing the song, and if that didn’t change, I would almost be certain Interscope would push back the disc til next year. So GUESS WHAT!? Interscope is rush releasing the NEXT single, “Carry Out” with Justin Timberlake, as early as next week.
And yes, everyone’s sales are down first week, but that theory will be debunked if Susan Boyle does in deed move 600,000+ this week, and Adam in the 250,000 range as well.

      • katie

I love how people keep saying Kris isn’t getting radio support. Adam isn’t either! At least in my town, I’ve heard his song twice on the radio and Kris’ twice. So don’t blame the radio stations.

  • graeme

Yeah, his album absolutely has potential. He should release “Alright With Me” as single #2. But “Live Like We’re Dying” is still building.

    • kct

      I completely agree.
I also think that kris is not the typical idol singer; he is laid back and doesn’t have an over-sized ego. For those who find him dull, you are missing some pretty funny MTV bits. I can’t wait to see him at Z100′s Jingle Ball (I’ll refill my drink while Justin Beiber is playing).

      • Layla

Wow, couldn’t have agreed more. Have you people who think Kris is boring read any of his interviews or seen him not under the Idol spotlight? Pretty funny guy.

      • D

        Some people find “low-key” boring. I don’t.

    • Suzanne

Agree. Release Alright with Me as single 2, maybe followed by Before We Come Undone. And keep the singles coming. A big mistake Jive made was waiting too long for single 2 for David Archuleta b/c Crush was such a strong single. Then, the second single tanked. On the first week when Live Like We’re Dying doesn’t go higher on the BB hot 100 chart, Alright with Me should be released and pushed for adds. Quick, quick–like Kelly Clarkson’s singles and Carrie Underwood’s off their new cds.

  • Thaxton

I still think in the longrun Archuleta will outsell Cook.

    • Suzanne

I agree. But it will be years.

    • miras

I disagree. I love both Davids but I’m afraid when David A loses his puppy look when he gets older he’ll be forgotten. David C will rock for the people who love this style of music. By the way bought both Kris’ and Adam’s albums. Well done to both. Hardly anyone knew them before AI. They sell albums, have concerts, appear on TV. They seem to be happy. Why do you worry? Not everyone wants to have a career of the Beatles and Michael Jackson. Personally I think that Kris would prefer to have a low key career, spend more time with his wife and not be followed by thousand of fans and be screamed at. Adam surely prefers media attention and that’s what he’s getting. Be happy for them if you like them. If you don’t buy somebody else’s music and leave them alone

  • cthemusic

Crowded marketplace, a lead single that is earnest, yet not exactly catching the radio waves. Perhaps, Tim McGraw’s similar titled and themed hit song “Live Like You Were Dying” gives Kris Allen’s “Live Like We’re Dying” a been there, heard that, even though the songs are different sort of feel. I do think the Kris Allen CD will have legs, and sell well throughout the holiday season.

  • Apres Ski

B Wed 11/25/09 2:06 PM in this post is ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!
Adam Lambert is the man & Kris will be eatin’ his CD & entertainment dust for the rest of his life. Adam’s CD is in the top 10 and after his performance on the AMAs Sunday, Adam is not hot, but HAWT! Kris . . . not so much!

    • dee

It’s not Kris’s fault adam wants to have sex with him but not you. Hating kris won’t change that fact, sorry.

  • Lyn2

American Idol has given Adam Lambert equal status with Kris–almost as if they were co-winners. They even released both versions of the awful “No Boundaries”. I think Kris will do alright in the long haul. Like you pointed out, some of the other Idol alumni have started out slow and grew steadily stronger. I personally love Kris’ CD and wouldn’t waste a dime on Adam Lambert.

    • Brian

Now I feel just the opposite. I wouldn’t waste a dime on Kris Allen’s snoozefest of an album. The songs are as boring as he is. Did you even bother to listen to Adam’s album. It rocks!

      • judy

I agree. Adam’s cd ROCKS!!!! Been listening to it constantly. I listened to a few of Kris’ songs but just didnt want to buy the cd. I watched Adam this morning on CBS and he was great.

      • Neil

I heard Adam’s album on his facebook, and it was just meh. He has a ton of cheesy songs. Good luck to Adam getting the kind of airplay on radio that Kris has gotten. Kris’ songs obviously appeal, or his song LLWD wouldn’t be picking up so many spins every week for the last two months.

      • phyllis

Adam lambert is the most overrated singer ever. He sounds nasal, he doesn’t emotionally connect to what he’s singing about, and he relies on that gimmick of screaming notes. His voice is quite awful. Just because he can sing a lot of octaves doesn’t make him a “great singer”. A great singer makes you believe in what he’s singing and moves you.

    • Ali

Completely agree – Ada is over-hyped and all about the drama – Kris was never given the credit he deserves and is only about the music

      • Suzanne

Agree. But Britney Spears and Madonna will always be bigger than Alanis Morrisette. The public likes the drama because it’s rebellious and the entertainment media loves the “news” feed. Adam Lambert is a PR genius, and Kris Allen is a singer/songwriter. I mean–how many people know who John Mayer is b/c he screwed up his relationship with Jennifer Aniston?

      • TK

I love just love every song on Adam’s CD, and only one on Kris’s. He is just too boring.

  • Josh

BC most of the ppl voting for him were either anti Adam voters or lived in Arkansas. Not to say he doesn’t have real fans, just not that many. Winning American Idol is more of a sociopolitical victory than a musical one. All the people voting for Adam were doing so because they genuinely loved him. A large percentage of the people voting for Kris were doing so bc of hometown pride, or because of their disapproval of Adam. Not Kris’s fault, he’s just not that compelling. If I want to hear music like that I’ll listen to the Fray, or Maroon 5, or Jack Johnson, who sing very similar songs better.

    • kct

I voted for Kris multiple times. I live in the NYC area and have nothing against Adam. Generalize much?

      • Josh

I said the word MOST and I said that he DOES have real fans. Just not that many.

      • Neil

Josh, it doesn’t matter what you said. Kris wouldn’t have even made it to the Final 2 if he didn’t have lots of fans. He was the only contestant not to have been in the Bottom 2 in AI8 also. And he certainly wouldn’t have won if he didn’t appeal to a lot of people. If people didn’t like Kris, they wouldn’t have wasted their time voting for him during the finale just to vote against Adam. Especially when you consider that his phone lines were busy for the first 3 hours. No one is going to wait 3 hours just to vote against someone else…
It would make much more sense if you didn’t generalize Kris’ win by saying what you did, but instead assume that maybe Kris’ fans during Idol will buy his cd when they first see it while shopping, etc. Not everyone is going to buy an album the first week that it’s available. Overall sales mean much more than first week.

    • Layla

I don’t believe that’s true, I know tons of people who voted for Kris because they thought he was an amazing muscician, and these are people not necessarily in one certain area. Adam’s good, but we like Kris better.

    • gill

You don’t know why anyone voted. I voted for Kris because I loved Kris. Voted for him week after week. Loved his inventive musicality, his gogeous voice, and just loved HIM. Simple as that. And I’m from Massachusetts.

  • Phil

Michael, I am surprised you aren’t mentioning how ABC didn’t even invite Kris to perform along with the 75 other performers Sunday night, and was simply relegated to present an award, with really really awful dialog. But yeah as I already stated, and mostly everyone else here has, kris isn’t for everyone, and alot of people are now thinking those mass texting parties for the Idol finale, did indeed benefit Kris and hurt Adam, since clearly those same number of fans didn’t vote with their wallets this week. And honestly, with the over abundance of new releases this week, unless most big box stores have plenty of stock left from his poor sales last week, he could fall out of the top 20, UNLESS those stores run out of stock of Susan Boyle, Adam Lambert, Gaga and Rihanna, and people decide to buy the Kris cd cause its still sitting on the shelves.

    • Neil

      Logical fail.

If votes are free, then they have nothing to do with album sales, so why bring up a text-vote scandal unless you just like rehashing conspiracy theories?? Has nothing to do with why Kris won. Even DialIdol had Kris winning over Adam, and that was just based on busy signals of phone lines, haha. First week sales don’t indicate overall popularity. Overall sales over the course of months and months will do much better to indicate who America likes best.

      • Cuban Nerd

Do you guys realize that a lot of Adam’s fans are not fans of Idol like me. Kris fans are mostly the people who saw him on AI. Not a lot of people watched last season. The buzz about Adam was all over the internet and that was why I found out about him. I don’t like mainstream music. Maybe that’s why Kris won because he’s too mainstream. Adam is more like underground kind of performer, perfectly fit for my musical taste.

  • Lyn2

PS–Look at your own website, Adam Lambert is everywhere. If his antics at the AMA’s were to garner attention to help boost his CD sales, then you’re helping him 100%. Glad to see that you, Slezak, haven’t forgotten about Kris. Thanks for that!

    • Katie

Errr, no – because LAST WEEK Adam was *NOT* “all over the website” – and last week was when Kris’ album was launched.

In fact, there were at least two heavily commented stories on this site about Kris.

But you keep grasping for straws…

      • Mark

Pfft, what is your problem? If you looked anywhere at aggregate media coverage, Adam is up about 10x on Kris. Seriously, it’s not even close.

  • scyren

Wasn’t ever a KA fan. I don’t have any idea how he was even #2. He’s just not my thing. I’m all about the singer/songwriter types I’m one myself. But, if you don’t have a real dynamic personality then you better really bring it in other areas and I don’t think he does that. I think Allison should have won and I listened to clips of her album last night and to me it’s better than KA and AL.

    • Bench

Your all about the “singer/songwriter types”? Where did you miss the fact that Kris WROTE/CO-WROTE 9 out of 12 TRACKS on his Album then?

      • gina

He wrote or co-wrote 9 bad songs, how does that help him ?

  • itsme

To Lyn2: well more people want to waste their dimes on Adam’s cd than Kris’…you are part of Kris’ prolbem with connecting, it’s all about how he’s not Adam…that only wins a reality TV show contest.

    • Neil

nice try. overall sales mean much more to a person’s overall popularity than just first week sales. surely you’re aware of that… and realize that you are speaking too soon.
