Kris’s album is great. And I agree with the people writing that a lot of the attention is going to Adam right now. But for those of us who like his music, the CD is super! It’s a shame because this album really does deserve more air time than it’s getting.

    • Phil

I completely disagree with you, for the simple fact that Slezak devoted ALL his attention and MUCH of this web space to Kris LAST week when his cd dropped, and still the poor sales. Adam has been getting overexposed this week, but none other than that OUT argument last week, Slezak gave Kris alot of love on this site. Maybe Slezak shouldn’t have started the Adam over exposure by running that OUT editor item, which subsequently then led to Whitney Pastorek writing a piece on it as well…but I seriously feel as though Michael’s bloated track by track love letter to Kris last week, while completely NOT even mentioning alot of the new music releases that dropped last week should have sufficed. I mena, really, how much more can you fans expect the magazines & articles to mention Kris!? I swear most of you won’t be happy til someone lands an interview with his wife…SHEESH!

      • Mark

Seriously, we’re talking about *one media journalist* and *two articles*. Which really can’t be compared to the coverage Adam is getting on the whole.

      • Phil

*one media journalist* with an UN- healthy Idol obsession. Search the site and put in Kris allen and see how many items pop up from Slezak alone last week. TWO ARTICLES a day maybe!

      • Shane

@Phil – No offense to Slezak here, but you do realize that most of America doesn’t even come to the EW site don’t you? Slezak could write hunderds of articles about Kris – or anyone for that matter – and most of the country wouldn’t even know it. You’re acting like everyone in the entire country is reading EW. Simply not the case.

      • Phil

Shane- Of course I realize that, but last week, IF you did visit EW.com you would think that ONLY Kris and Lady Gaga’s cd came out! As an entertainment magazine & wesbite as a whole, I feel as though they’ve abandoned much of the music industry as of late and have given non-stop coverage to EVERY possible little Idol tid-bit (when they come up for air for not writing some pointless TWILIGHT related article). I can’t possibly be the only fan that feels that way.

To me, everything Kris does is a slow burn. He started out Idol that way, his single is that way, and I think that’s how his album will be. The end result is what matters (not just first week sales)and it seems like his album will surely sell a lot in the long run.

  • itsme

I mean Kris could not even crack the top ten…wow…wnd got beat by a 15 year old…at least he sold more than Leona Lewis

    • Shane

A 15 year old that is HUGE with the pre-teen and teen girls. He’s all over the teen magazines. That’s why he got beat by a 15 year old.

I think there are many factors why Kris’ album didn’t sell as well. I agree he doesn’t attract the most attention, so that may play into it. I’m here for the music though, so I’m happy to see he’s not tabloid fodder.

In response to someone’s comment above about how he sounds a lot like other artists, I disagree that it’s a factor in his low sales. Yes, he’s not alone in his genre, but 98% of the artists out there (including popular ones) have albums that sound like other albums in their genre.

Kris’ type of music just isn’t ear candy, which sells these days. I think it grows on you, and I have faith that Kris will steadily move up like he did on the show.

Finally, I, for one, am happy he’s a drama-free guy. And if you’d actually pay attention, he’s a very interesting guy who’s hilarious. In an industry where everyone is basically holding up a sign that says ‘look at me!’, I think it’s refreshing and commendable that he doesn’t do that.

  • Ashley

He is the new Taylor Hicks. I feel sorry for him..

    • Mark

Note: Taylor Hicks had the third highest debut ever, so that’s a really sloppy comparison at best, isn’t it?

He’s really more prone to become the next Jordin. Which isn’t a terrible place to be, if not ideal.

      • Mark

Qualified: 3rd highest ever for an Idol winner. Not ever ever. My bad.

    • Katie

LOL Taylor Hicks’ debut album sold almost 300k units in its first week – Kris will be lucky to sell that much this era in total.

      • Mark

Point being, though, it had no comparative legs, and thus he was dropped. The number’s practically not even comparatively relevant.

      • freddy

again Katie is a DRONE ADAMFEMBOT

  • Sme

Media has renamed the winner of AI8 and what a shame because Kris’ CD is really great.

  • WD

I believe this will be a case of a slow growing CD. Much like his Idol run. Actually, Im much more surprised that Rihanna and Leona Lewis are not doing better. And yes Lambert is doing good, but not great. BTW I would have never expected those numbers from Susan Boyle.

  • Dan

Marketing for the Season 8 contestants has been horrendous. I watch the show, but I don’t really listen to top 40 music. However, since the three finalists all leaned towards rock, I’ve been interested. First, all three CDs came out on back to back weeks. I thought Adam’s came out last week, Kris’ and Allison this week. They needed to spread these releases out a bit, and make sure to give each of the respective artists their time in the spotlight. This was just a huge FusterCluck.

  • Clay

Kris doesn’t have enough charisma or something different to make him stand out in thsi business. That’s what’s happening.
He’s a nice guy, ok vocals but that’s about it.
Even in the idol world, he’s just a safer and low version of David Cook. Idol already had David Cook, they didn’t need Kris as a winner. He would have been better not winning.
Every idol winner is different from the other.
    Kelly – Girl pop/rocker
    Ruben – Soul/R&B
    Fantasia – Diva voice, R&B
    Carrie – Female country
    Taylor – Male pop/soul
Jordin – Female bubble pop with some R&B
    Cook – Make rocker
Kris is very much the David Cook type but without the charisma, edge and IT factor David has.
The album is good, one of the best idol debuts, but in the music industry it’s just another generic bland album without radio hits.

    • Sally in Chicago

I agree with Clay. They just crowned David Cook last year, and right afterwards come David Cook 2. (btw, has anybody heard from David A? He was supposed to be the next best thing and he’s faded fast)
There’s no distinction between the two guys. Plus, Chris is laid back, whereas #2 winner is out there all over the place with his mouth open commenting about everything on everybody’s mag cover and TV show. That’s being aggressive. And getting attention.

    • Mark

Eh, they’re not in the same genre. David’s in the post-grunge set, really; Kris is in a different form of AC pop-rock. And this is revisionist history; Kelly’s first record was not that of a girl rocker, but that of an aspiring pop diva.

  • Gigi

“Also, isn’t that CD cover of his ironic?”
    LOL!!!

  • itsme

And don’t think Sony BMG is not looking at who’s hot right now…Boyle is saving it all, she is the cash cow…and Adam is too because he fills that “outsider/risk taker” void and has crafted a great cult of personality. Kris is too regular and pulls no one in…Mayer is a tabloid freak and sells and album getting average/negative reviews because of his fanbase and fame…everyone knows who Mayer is thanks to Jennifer Aniston and other famous females…controversy sells, so but it does…Adam did it all this past Sunday and seems to be fine with the positive and negative feedback. Many people find Adam inspiring…I know I do!!!

  • Mary

All I can say is that alot of people are missing out on an amazing CD…
I think the media has alot to do with this because they have virtually ignored kris and have pronounced Adam as “the chosen one”. And alot of the reviews on his album made no sense and were clearly biased and made no sense at all!

  • Nathan

The best way to explain it is that he has a lot of really good competition, along with the fact that he has gotten far less media attention than the likes of Adam Lambert. I predict that Adam Lambert isn’t going to sell as well as predicted because of all the albums released by popular artists around the same time.

In the long run, I think Kris will maintain steady sales. I wouldn’t be surprised that, as his songs are played more and more on the radio, his sales pick up some in the future. I really think that this is a product of no one being exposed to Kris. For example, my friends who don’t even watch Idol know who Adam Lambert is because of all the media attention, but when I told them I purchased Kris Allen’s CD they said, “Who is Kris Allen?”

I think this will change over time. His album has many good songs on it, which will catch on if they only get some attention.

  • Allen

Michael, I find your pondering a little puzzling. Lambert’s press even before the AMA story has been THE idol story post the end of the season. EW has been a virtual Lambert website for weeks and weeks now. It’s a mean business. All idols come off the show going uphill against stigmas and whatnot. The press wrote this story a long time ago, that Lambert was the deserving winner and Allen was not. The outcome is merely following that narrative.

  • Ari

I love Kris’ cd and just want him to make music but in today’s tabloid world he would need to grope a guy to get attention. Music doesn’t matter anymore, opportunists who can be gay one day and straight the next do well. And, the Idol TPTB were never behind Kris, they were cramming Adam down our throats and now they are trying to convince us that he is the artiste of the future. Well, the tastes are for gagas and TBTB found their very own imitation.
