'New Moon' soundtrack goes platinum: But does it have the teeth to beat 'Twilight'?

Categories: Charts, Radiohead, Twilight

It seems my New Moon: A Hater’s Guide Popwatch post of last week has had absolutely zero effect on the commercial success of the film and its soundtrack. While the movie racked up an astonishing, and record-breaking, $142m in ticket sales over its opening weekend, the CD has just been certified platinum and sold 93,000 copies in its sixth week on release.

It turns out you can get blood from stone of the record-buying public if you involve enough buffed-up werewolves and sulky looks. The big question now is whether the the New Moon CD, which features tracks by Death Cab for Cutie, Muse, The Killers and Thom Yorke (whose contribution, “Hearing Damage,” you can hear below) as well as indie upstarts like Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver and Hurricane Bells, can top the success of the Twilight album. That has been on the Billboard charts now for 55 weeks straight and has shifted 2.3 million copies.

So, non-haters: Do you prefer the Twilight or the New Moon CD? And do you think the latter will ultimately defeat the former?

Its simple rationale….no radio hit like Paramode’s “Decode” means that the disc won’t be nearly as popular as the Twilight Soundtrack. Should that change, then lets talk…but seriously, I don’t see any mainstream top 40 hits coming off the NEW MOON disc. Even the Death Cab track…And Warner is still trying to break “Uprising” at pop radio so…I am sure the TwiHards will keep the album on the charts, but with no radio hit, it can’t be nearly as successful as the first.

Not a Twilight fan AT ALL, but still bought the New Moon soundtrack b/c it’s stellar. One of the better soundtracks I’ve heard. Plus, a lot of the songs aren’t available elsewhere, so I can deal with having “New Moon Soundtrack” appear on my iPod.

i agree hanna i bought this on itunes beacuse of thom yorke and grizzly bear. best indie compilation than dark was the night. I would have bought it if it were called the icarly soundtrack

As an avid Twilight fan (of the whole series & both movies)… I was very disappointed with the New Moon soundtrack. I love the Twilight soundtrack and listen to it ALL the time. However the New Moon soundtrack is a complete letdown. New Moon the movie was great, but the soundtrack is horrible. I guess they were trying to pick songs to reflect the mood of Bella… down in the dumps because of Edward’s departure… but still, listening to the cd puts me in a depressed mood! Not something I want to happen when I pop in a CD to listen to.
The Glee CD on the other hand…
    FABULOUS!

First off it’s Paramore, not Paramode and what about Ok Go’s Shooting the Moon? I have both soundtrackes and prefer New Moon. Better quality of music. Sad that Stephenie didn’t get much input on the NM soundtrack. Both good CD’s though. Even non-twilighters should give the new CD a chance. Rollingstone gave it 4 and a 1/2 stars and that’s saying a lot. Check it out people and give it a chance not thinking about it as a Twilight Saga CD. Bet you like it!Satellite Heart by Anya Marina is gorgeous.

    • Phil

I apologize for the typo, I know the name of the band, and to answer your question OK Go’s actual new single is entitled “WTF”, so thats what their label will be promoting to mainstream radio, NOT “Shooting The Moon”.

    • invaliduser

non twilighters are up on this. twihards bought beacuse it said new moon on it. the majority of people bought it for the collection of indie rock

    • Kelsey

Plenty of us who ARE NOT Twihards bought this soundtrack because it had good music on it. Most of us were also familiar with the bands on it BEFORE they contributed to the soundtrack. In comparison, how many Twihards would have bought the album no matter what crap was on it? At least non-Twihards who bought it did so because we already liked the music, not, as in the case of Twilight fans, because the Twilight media-industrial complex told us to.

My heart still tremble till day when I hear the first notes of “Decode”. And what about Bella’s lullaby! And Supermassive hole!^^
New Moon Soundtrack? Uh… No but nooo thank you. I stick to Twilight on this one (too).

  • Phil

Oh and FYI EW Congrats on finding yet ANOTHER WAY to run a Twilight related itemm!

  • invaliduser

hilarious!! twihards saying the likes of thom yorke and grizzly bear suck. i think they wanted more paramore and garbage like that

    • Leonora

What? Did you think the twilight cd was garbage??? both cds have indie-type music on them… its just new moon doesn’t quite live up to the twilight cd. more mainstream I think.

      • @Leonora

You think the New Moon soundtrack is MORE mainstream that Twilight’s?
This is why I read Twilihgt-related articles. For the lulz.

    • invaliduser

linkin park and paramore are mainstream sweetie

  • rush

i love both soundtracks. both soundratcks reflect the mood of each film. twilight isnt as depressing as new moon, but then again new moon is supposed to be depressing. actually thought that most of the songs were suprisingly upbeat for the mood of new moon first time i listened to it. but now i love it. i love the indie rock contributions in these soundrtacks, has opened my eyes to a lot of new music. HATE the paramore songs btw, however have always been a big fan of muse :)

    • invaliduser

i think that was the goal of this soundtrack to expose new and underground artists to the masses.

      • rush

the first movie was an indiemovie, so its no surprise that it had an indie soundtrack(along with some of the groups that inspired the author.) i thing the reason why people might not like the soundtrack this time around is tay it isnt exactly an indiemovie anymore, and so they expected am more mainstrean soundtrack. i think the first one had a lot of unknown artist like iron and wine and blue foundation. thesemovies might just be the best press these artists can eve imagine getting

I love twilight all the books are great the movies are eh, not perfect but they are what they are, I like looking at adorable young men but the music from Twilight was awful I hate that fing Paramour song awful, but I loved every song in New Moon love the indie bands and love Thom Yorkes Hearing Damage such a cool edgy song it actually was the only scene in the movie I liked mainly because of the music but overall way better soundtrack a little more mature but I’m older so I guess that appeals more to me.

It seems my New Moon: A Hater’s Guide Popwatch post of last week has had absolutely zero effect on the commercial success of the film and its soundtrack.

think this might be the stupidest thing written on ew so far, i mean ONE haters guide as opposed to the 100 articles the magazine has written bout twilight/new moon the past month, its not exactly and even playingfield.

  • darkestred

I have to go with Twilight – for now. I absolutely loved Perry Farrell’s track and Super Massive Black Hole rocked my world long before this soundtrack came out. So far I have to say I’m only getting into Thom Yorke’s track – maybe in time I’ll warm up to the rest.

  • Kalie

I like both soundtracks, but I think “New Moon” has the superior one. The “Twilight” soundtrack was a little more teenager-friendly, while the NM soundtrack is a lot more adult. You can’t beat the collection of fantastic artists on this soundtrack. It may not sell as well, though, just because it’s less upbeat and not aimed squarely at teenagers.

  • kate

Both are killer albums… Twilight’s fit the movie better. New Moon’s felt like a mixed tape. I dont think i will beat Twilight’s soundtrack.

I do hope teenage girls take a liking to the bands featured on the soundtrack… its a nice change from hearing hannah montana all the time!

  • Raven_Moon

I definitely prefer the “Twilight” soundtrack. Paramore, Iron & Wine & Robert Pattinson are all great on it. I feel a little letdown by the “New Moon” one which surprised me because I love Deathcab for Cutie & The Killers.

  • Gigi

Twilight will definitely have more commercial success, but from artistic standpoint, New Moon is the superior album. Sure its a little dark and twisty, but that’s the idea, Bella’s depressed in this movie! My favorites are the songs by Muse, Thom Yorke and Grizzly Bear -the chorus of the song Slow Life is hauntingly beautiful and goes well with the scene in the movie when Bella is drowning.

  • leesa

That’s tough. I like nearly every song on the New Moon soundtrack. Although Twilight has some pretty good songs as well. But I’d go with New Moon.
