I also thought U2 was fantastic. Bono’s ego was quite in check thank you very much. He very much let Fergie and Mick have the spotlight during “Gimme Shelter” and seemed humbled to be playing with his idol, Patti Smith.
“Jungleland” and “Because the night” were unbelievable….the E Street Band was in excellent shape. And show me any current band that can write the jungleland lyrics, play that sax solo or make you simply, irresitably, have to pump your fist to “because the night belongs to lovers”….
Mike Jagger looked like hell as did poor Lou Reed.
Over-blown Bono and (really!) Simon & Garfunkle could have been eliminated.
Overall quite a wonderful night with fewer lewd jokes and swearing than the Oscars and American Music Awards combined.
Shows where true talent really is.
i thought the show was fantastic, starting with tom hanks intro following brian wilson’s “our prayer” all were great especially, U2, mick, aretha, metallic, paul simon and bruce. high light was soul man sam moore. this guy was the best!
I loved the Metallica set, especially when Ozzy joined them. The duet between Mick Jagger and Bono on “Stuck in a Moment” was my favorite highlight. In general, this was a great 4 hours–nobody is likely to love 100% of the show.
Simon & Garfunkel were wonderful and their set brought me back to some special moments in time–I saw their reunion Concert live back in 1983 on the Great lawn at Central Park.
We should treasure this Concert, as we will not likely see a gathering like this ever again.
Worst post ever! U2 was phenomenal even if you don’t like the way Bono carries himself you cannot ignore how amazing the voice and music are. Bruce Springstein giving his all and out singing Billy Joel. Note: When Ozzy played with Metallica in “86″ he said he couldn’t keep up with them. Looks like Ozzy has passed them out…Metallica was terrible
U2 and Bruce doing I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For gave me chills and FYI – the “wedding band” comment wasn’t big ego, it was meant to be self depreciating because they were backing up their idols…..
Yes, thank you Kevin. Some people only see when it comes to Bono and U2. Thank you for pointing out what he truly meant. U2 fans know that Bono has often expressed his respect and admiration for other artists and that he isn’t all ego.
The event was a fantastic celebration of Rock music with amazing performances.
Maybe people should focus on that rather than being negative.
Sam Davies backed by Metallica was by far the coolest part of the evening. I loved seeing Metallica get back to the true origin of hard rock. Great, interesting, unexpected…so awesome.
I really enjoyed the show. Highlights for me were Simon and Garfunkel and the amazing job they did on Bridge Over Troubled Waters, Metallica, Jeff Beck and the solo on “A Day in the Life”, and of course the Boss and the duet with the guy from Rage Against the Machine. What a show!
Paul Simon’s unlovely personality is starting to manifest itself in his appearance. Bono is as much a windbag as ever, and he should know better by now than to go onstage ahead of Bruce Springsteen. Bruce simply showed everyone else how it is supposed to be done. Charming, gracious, funny, passionate — as he said at the end of the night, “that’s rock and roll.” BTW what is wrong with Billy Joel? Was he just too lazy to learn the lyrics to “Born To Run,” or is he showing the early stages of dementia? Rather pitiable.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concert should take place in Cleveland. Period.
i second this comment
Jeff Beck’s entire set was phenomenal. The instrumental “A Day in the Life” blew me away.

Thanks for pointing that out. It was the opposite of ego. Don’t understand all the hate for Bono.

Oops. I meant some people only see what they want to see when it comes to Bono and U2.
Simon and Garfunkel brought tears to my eyes…just adore them
Yeah, I pretty much bawled. Their songs are some of the first I ever heard as a child.

Does anyone know if this will be on DVD anytime soon?
Bonnie Rait was tremendous, and of course Jeff Beck and his band! Guess what Bono, you should give your act a rest!
