Carrie Underwood, 'Play On': The extended Music Mix album review

Carrie Underwood, Play On (19/Arista Nashville)

Note: Underwood’s label didn’t make her new album available early for press; Play On is out today.

If it seems vaguely insulting to call the smashingly successful Idol alum’s material formulaic, know at least that it is, three albums in, one the most well-honed formulas in the business. Underwood’s M.O.—equal parts good-riddance-to-bad-boys stompers and fervent, string-swelling balladry—has served her well, and she’s no fool.

Hard-charging rocker “Undo It,” with its stuttering power-chord chorus (“I wanna uh-uh-uh-uh-uh-undo it”) gives first single “Casanova” a run for its kiss-off glory; the banjo-goosed revenge anthem “Songs Like This”  comes in a close third. Inevitably, the saucy stuff, which she embodies with easy, appealing verve, tends to eclipse the ballads, which too often substitute slick Hallmark-card sentimentality for genuine affect.

“Change” is an admirable if inevitably treacly call for social awareness and action (think John Mayer’s “Waiting On the World to Change,” lady-Nashville style); “Temporary Home” is the sonic equivalent of a Keane painting. She does better on more personal pleas like the aching, prettily melodic “Look at Me” and “What Can I Say,” a hit-the-big-notes duet with Clark brothers trio Sons of Sylvia. As always, her vocal ability is beyond reproach; a crack in the immaculately polished veneer, however, would be welcome too. Grade: B Download This: “Cowboy Casanova”

Rihanna breaks silence with first interviews since her assault: What will she say?

Categories: Rihanna

Rihanna has remained all but silent in the nine months since she was assaulted — a stark contrast to the fumbling interviews and stiff apologies we’ve heard from her attacker, ex Chris Brown. Not anymore. Whether because she has an album on the way or just because she’s ready to talk now, Rihanna has booked several high-profile interviews this week, including a sit-down with ABC’s Diane Sawyer that will air this Thursday and Friday on Good Morning America and 20/20, and a lengthy Q&A with Glamour.

Transcripts of the Diane Sawyer interview haven’t been released yet, aside from one key quotation about her assault: “This happened to me…it could happen to anyone.” Her Glamour remarks give more of an idea of how she’s handling that sensitive subject. “Domestic violence is a big secret,” the singer says. “No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can’t tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up. You don’t dare let your neighbor know that you fight. It’s one of the things we [women] will hide, because it’s embarrassing. My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery. The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that.”

Pete Wentz: A Music Mix Q&A on 'Band Hero,' lost-bet tattoos and why Fall Out Boy isn't breaking up

Tomorrow sees the release of Band Hero, the next evolutionary step from the same people who brought the world the ridiculously successful Guitar Hero series. As you might guess, band hero is Guitar Hero plus the rest of the band: vocals, drums and bass. No groupie avatar option yet.

Chicago pop-punk veterans Fall Out Boy are featured prominently on the game, with “Sugar, We’re Going Down” and “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” and bassist Pete Wentz appears in an upcoming Brett Ratner-directed commercial for the game inspired by a certain ’80s film classic, alongside Blink 182′s Travis Barker, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, and (yes) Taylor Swift.

Wentz took some time to talk to EW about Band Hero, what kind of music he listens to around the house with wife Ashlee Simpson and their one-year-old son, and the bet-related revenge he hopes to get on Cobra Starship‘s frontman.

EW: So in the commercial for Band Hero, you reenact that famous scene from Risky Business with Tom Cruise dancing to that Bob Seger song. Are you a fan of the movie?

PW: Oh, definitely a fan of Risky Business. Those are like the movies I grew up with, you know, the car going through the garage in Ferris Bueller and all that.

EW: Did you do any trial runs of the Tom Cruise underwear/sock sliding scene growing up?

PW: I’ve done that, but I do it more onstage when it rains. I’ll try to do it onstage and it will not end up so good generally. It’s not the easiest thing to do, in the way that you have to land on a beat, and depending on how much they would Lysol the floor [for the commercial shoot], you would go faster or slower. And you’re in your underwear, and there was three of us, me, Travis [Barker of Blink-182] and Rivers [Cuomo of Weezer]. And we had Taylor [Swift] in there, too.

EW: What was Taylor Swift like?

Shakira's new 'Did It Again' video: Those are quite the bedroom acrobatics

The video for Shakira’s latest single, “Did It Again,” has hit the web, and it shows the Colombian spitfire getting rather creative…in the bedroom. Which can’t be a bad thing, right?

She fires up the mattress with a hottie dancer-looking dude, proving that she’s still got the Latin moves—or a newer, nighttime-friendly version of them—that made her so famous in her 2001 video for “Whenever, Wherever.” Dang, she’s a sexy minx!

You can enjoy the boudoir gymnastics after the jump.

Clearly, steam is having a moment in music videos. Hello: instant sultriness! But overall, because of  said jumping around in bed, Shakira’s video is just a fun feat to watch her pull off. Because, otherwise, it’s basically just Shakira being pretty. Which is fine, too. My only burning question: Who choreographed it? Seems like whoever it was did similar types of things for the Matrix trilogy.

How are you all feeling: Loving it? Hating it? Inspired to try some of her moves in your own bedroom? (Wink, wink.)

UPDATE: Interestingly enough, it turns out Shakira’s “Did It Again” video was choreographed by Katrin Hall, the artistic director for the Iceland Dance Company.

Ellie Goulding: The Music Mix recommends

Today in the Venn diagram of Things We Love and Things Europe Has a Lock On: sprightly blond glitch-pop pixies. The magical continent that brought us Robyn, Annie, and Lykke Li has yielded yet another Girl Wonder: 22-year-old Welsh songstress Ellie Goulding.

Goulding has already found some fame over there, collaborating with the likes of Mark Ronson and FrankMusic and touring with Little Boots; honestly, she had me at her covers (Bon Iver’s spooky campfire sketch “The Wolves (Act 1 and II”) rendered in stunning a capella; a Bjork-meets-mad-Chipmunks take on Sam Sparro’s techno-romantique torcher “Black and Gold”). Then mournful little sonic icicle “Wish I’d Stayed” sealed the deal; she sounds like The Never Ending Story’s Childlike Empress, post disco-bender comedown. Delightful!

Her debut isn’t actually due in England until June of next year, with no word yet of a U.S. release; in the meantime, find several tracks streaming on her MySpace (including the aforementioned covers), and listen to the enchanting “Starry Eyed,” below:

Glambert and 'Gossip Girl' join the weird world of Weezer

What do Adam Lambert, snuggies, Lil Wayne, Gossip Girl, giant bug costumes and Kenny G have in common? More than they should: They’re all recent additions to the ever-expanding Weezer-verse.

Glambert and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester are the latest celebrities to get pulled into the schizophrenic publicity cornucopia surrounding the renowned nerd-rockers’ latest album, Ratitude, which drops tomorrow. Frontman Rivers Cuomo brought Meester—the Gossip Girl star and occasional pop singer—onstage during their Halloween concert at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom for a duet on their latest single, “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To.” The fans tweaked out and you can check it out for yourself here:

Over the weekend it was also confirmed that the Cuomo-penned track “Pick U Up” is a last-minute addition to Adam Lambert’s obsessively anticipated debut album, For Your Entertainment. In the current issue of Rolling Stone Cuomo even joins the Glambert swooning bandwagon, stating, “He has the kind of voice I convince myself that I have.”

These Twilight Zone-esque turn of events might come as a shock to estranged fans who still associate the Weez with outsider angst. But for those who’ve been keeping score, this is probably the most normal thing they’ve done all year, what with their bizarre Lil Wayne collaboration, the jam session with smooth-jazz doofus Kenny G, their sinister plan to fill the world with Weezer-branded snuggies, or dressing up as bugs for a kooky children’s TV show they claim to know nothing about.

So Cuomo teaming up with an American Idol sensation who has the voice of Steven Tyler and the fashion of Limahl? As Weezer’s L.A. brethren once said, nothing’s shocking.

What do you think about Glamby and Blair Waldorf getting pulled into the realm of Weezer? Is it a trippy dream come true or a lesser-known circle of Dante’s hell?

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys: Watch their 'Empire State of Mind' video now

A song as anthemic as Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind” needs a music video to match. Cue auteur Hype Williams, who filmed the official clip you’ll find after the jump. Get ready for a ton of classy black-and-white shots of Jay and Alicia hanging out everywhere from Times Square to Harlem, surrounded by more than a few bright lights that will ins-pie-err yooooou.

Let me tell you, between “Empire State of Mind” and the way the Yanks are doing in the Series, this blogger is feeling so much NYC pride right now. Anyone with me? And how do non-New Yorkers feel about this song and video, anyway? Sound off in the comments section.

Rihanna, 'Wait Your Turn': New single leaks to the web

You’ve seen the Grace Jonesing album cover; you’ve heard the shotgun-blast first single “Russian Roulette”; now, another track from Rihanna’s upcoming November 23 release Rated R has leaked to the web. YouTube is hosting various streams of the Caribbean-tinged mid-tempo synth thumper “Wait Your Turn,” in which the 20-year-old pop star gets unusually irie with boastful rhymes like “”I pitch with a grenade/ Swing away if you’re feeling brave/ There’s so much power in my name.”

Now that the wait is nearly ova, are you feeling it, Music Mixers? I cannot tell a lie; I’m a little underwhelmed by this new walk-the-plank Pirate RiRi incarnation. The eye-patched barb-wire-my-boobies dark-star shtick is getting a little one-note Manson-esque, n’est-ce pas? But maybe we’ll get some context when she appears on Good Morning America this Thursday, and 20/20 the day after — her first live interviews since Chris Brown’s assault in February.

UPDATE: According to her publicist, the official video for “Wait Your Turn” will premiere tomorrow on rihanna.com

'New Moon' soundtrackers Hurricane Bells, 'This Year': An EW Video exclusive

Brooklyn-based rock outfit Hurricane Bells (actually just sole member Steve Schiltz, also of onetime Strokes tourmates Longwave) recently won the alt-rock lotto, snagging high-profile placement alongside Death Cab, the Killers, and Thom Yorke, et al on the clearly-toothsome New Moon soundtrack.

That means, of course, a whole new audience for Schiltz and his melodic, fuzzed-up garage rock: the Bells will be playing a handful of promo dates at Hot Topic stores with Moon castmembers (Nov. 10 in Philadelphia with Charlie Bewley and Daniel Cudmore, Nov. 12 in Boston with Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene), and releasing debut Tonight Is the Ghost digitally on the 10th as well.
