This week, Out magazine released its definitive top 100 picks of the Gayest, Greatest Albums of All Time—a list far more Louder than Bombs than Liza With a Z.
Perhaps that’s due to the judges: Gay icons and bold-faced PFLAG friends alike, from Boy George and Cyndi Lauper to Rufus Wainwright, Perez Hilton, Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste and the original angry inch, John Cameron Mitchell. Their choices are both expected (Madonna’s Ray of Light; ABBA’s Gold) and excellently aggressive (Lou Reed’s Transformer; The Gossip’s Standing in the Way of Control). You can taste the full rainbow by clicking through the links here; but first, let’s take a gander at no. 1, shall we? Take it away, Starman:
Readers, what artist or album on this list speaks most to you—the searing self-reflection of Antony and Ani? The disco-stick abandon of Dee-Lite and the Scissor Sisters? The Gay Sea Scrolls of George Michael, Diana Ross, et al? And who are minting future classics as we speak? Do tell.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that Adam Lambert doesn’t make Out’s list?
Unfortunately he JUST missed the cut-off….but he could have made the top 10 based on his cover alone.
NOT GAY ENOUGH LOL
Adam is way to chubby to make the list.
I get that this is all under the auspices of gay icons etc., but the whole existence of the list rubs me the wrong way. Must we decide for every event and person and object in life whether it’s gay or not? Can it just be a great album?
Antony and the Johnsons’ “I Am A Bird Now.”
Minus Cher, the B-52′s, and Deelite, it’s a pretty fantastic list. I’ve loved and owned much of it, despite not being in Out’s demographic. And I will always love George Michael.
The first “gay” CD to get to me was Dee-lite’s. I wasn’t anywhere close to gay back then, but I think that CD started me on the road!
No Kylie Minogue? Blasphemy. And..”Immaculate Collection” is M’s “gayest” recording? That’s kinda like cheating. I mean, after all, it’s a “best of” compilation!
This list pretty much sucks. I like Prince a lot, but his music, especially the early 80s stuff they have on the list, is so hetero it makes football seem gay. Elton John was a total closet case when he recorded those albums… but he qualifies just because he’s gay now?! And the #1 gayest album of all time is by a straight man? Only at Out, people.
Really? I thought David Bowie confirmed his bi-sexuality. He’s even said that he met his first wife when they “were f-ing the same guy.”
Gaga’s first CD. I heard almost every one of those songs at Pride this summer.
I’m surprised Liza Minnelli’s “Results” isn’t on here. After all, Pet Shop Boys produced it. If this album were any gayer it would hover.
That’s the first album I thought of when I read the headline! Glad it’s not just me.
Anything by Tim McGraw or Eminem!
Ha!
No Depeche Mode? Talk about Blasphamous Rumours!
I could see a few Bowie songs (Johnny, I’m only dancing and Boys Keep Swinging) but the Stardust album as a whole, dont see it.
I’m just relieved that Sylvester made the list. And I have to say, reading that quote from Kurt Cobain made me miss him even more than I already do. What a loss.
