Flaming Lips cover Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' album; results are surprisingly awful

It should come as no surprise that the Flaming Lips have covered Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety—they’re clearly indebted to (and in Read the full post.

I spent many, many hours listening to DSOTM, it is one one of the beloved albums of my youth and I still love it dearly. This cover is totally cool and frankly, if you can’t hear the love and admiration for the original in this, than this bad old world has driven you mad.

This is pure joy for a Lips fan.

Tedious and unsatisfying? This review is both. The Lips have produced a fantastic interpretation of a musical wonder. Open your mind as The Floyd taught us earnest reviewer…

I couldn’t disagree more. I love the album. Saw them play it live on new years eve. Amazing. Oh, and about the whole “ruining a classic” etc. Nothing is sacred. You should know this by now if you live in America. Suckas

At least they tried something new.

I had a feeling this would be a very love/hate type of deal. Either the Flaming Lips are blasphemous, or brave to take on anything. Me, it’s neither. All in all, let’s be honest. If the music didn’t have the name and lyrics of Dark Side of the Moon attached to it, it would be a pretty good album, and I have to give to them for two things. 1) No attempts at a Gilmour solo, and 2)The music to me doesn’t do DSOTM justice, but the effort does show how solid, timeless, and just plain good those lyrics are. Should this remake have been done in the first place? No, simply on the grounds that it IS a timeless album, so you can’t refresh it, you can’t update it, you can’t bring any new light to it whatsoever. So, really, the album means nothing. It doesn’t add anything to the original, and considering it was recorded in like, 2 weeks if I read correctly, it doesn’t mean much to The Flaming Lips either. I personally think the music being performed on the album would be pretty cool with maybe a cover of “Piper at the Gates of Dawn”, or “Saucerful of Secrets” Now, that is something I think could be enjoyed by most fans of both bands.

Well, well, well…I consider myself to be one of Pink Floyd’s bigger fans, not much of a Lips’ fan, and the original ‘Dark Side’ Album is certainly a favorite. That said, I think the Flaming Lips’ cover of it takes some digesting, but ultimately stands as very good album, worthy of the sublime title it attempts to shed new light on. It’s certainly bold, and for the most part it’s well done, and probably the best and most original cover of Dark Side I’ve heard to date. While others, such as the Easy Star All-Star’s ‘Dub Side of the Moon’ could be considered good, if not amusing covers, The Flaming Lips’ version captures much of the original album’s flowing mystique but ads a new level of tension and angst that perhaps better reflects today’s pace of life.

I agree broadly speaking – it really is just a bit pointless. Again one suspects that the ‘Lips’ actual obsession is with Syd Barrett and it’s all just been a terrible misunderstanding. The Lips are a good band but this I think shows a lack of real ideas creeping in. Oh well. By the way, Prog Rock bashing is extremely uncool nowadays and is only perpetrated by sad old journalists who still like to think themselves a ‘bit punk’ even as they plunge ever deeper into the bourgoise hellhole of irrelevence and hypocrisy. You know who they are – the ones who constantly harp on about their oh so convenient working-class backgrounds to hide from their utterly pointless middle class guilt about having idyllic childhoods and the fact that they have become wealthy by being neither interesting nor talented. So please leave Crimson etc out of this – it’ll be a cold day in hell before we get another band that has that much imagination and the chops to execute it as them, so less of the lazy, boring and utterly un-punk repetition of the same old tired cliches please. PROG RULES! Now, where’s my cape….?

Never heard about the “Lips” (Rollins was a little bit familiar too me and concerning Peaches, I’ve heard her name…) until a review of her DSOTM in the german RS. That only, to show you, that I bought that album merely by extreme curiousity. When I started it in my car, I was first deceived and …also in anger , because it feeled a bit *stressed”, nervous, …, and also a bit chaotic…for my ears… that attended some perfect beauty stream of sounds… extatic voices.. orgasms.. eargasms… and was confused because I didn’t really recognize my beloved pink album that guided us through many acid induced cyber-experiences…. And I stopped it after MOMOMOOONEY… It’s a CRIIIMEEEE, I thought. And I lamentated about our perverse youth and also some arty so-called musiciens….

But. AT HOME, fortunately I decided to make a second try!!!

AND… hokuspokus fidibus…. it WORKED 100 % pefectly, that TIME::: and I took a big coin of MONEY in a funky style and could immediatly BREATHE IN THE AIR before having my mad GIG IN THE SKY psychosis that took me straight to an asylium (I forgot unfortunately, that elder people also can have bad trips instead of eargasms!! Thank you PEACHES… I love your perfect audio-horror and anger iduced psychosis… BUT…at the end… also nowadays THE SUN IS ECLIPSED BY THE MOON…. AND because “nothing has changed…everything has changed” (hi, Mr. Jones…. greet your MOON child from me…excellent movie, really Dave…) there won’t be no darkside of the moon … maybe forever …… or, at least … as long as that star called SUN continues to explode ….
And finally and fortunately I suddenly realized and understood (bling…bing..pong.. GEISTESBLITZ..”thunder and lightning” in my CNS..DONNER….mille milliards de sabords..yuppie..), WHAT A GREAT ESTEEN goes through that flaming performance, and how faithfully that bowing lips has tried to show us ANOTHER DARK SIDE OF THE MOON …

thanks to them, I remembered, that there is never only one truth, neither only one dark side of the moon. Don’t forget, dear pinkies, that their isn’t a dark side of the moon at all, and …when star SUN will be burned up (no more fuel in it), at that forthcoming age also our beloved “MOON” (floyd or not, and neither pink will matter then…) will only have dark sides everywhere then…. one of these days,
Therefore I’m gratefull that esteememed gentlemen, GILMOUR; WRIGHT, MASON … being also sometimes tolerated by Sir WAGE’S TERROR have the chance to experience real rebirths – reincarnations of their brood, their beloved creation. In view of real, symbolic and imaginary
experiences of the involved creative beings….

you ppl are bitter. go wank off in the corner.

Wow, not bad. Different. But progressive. The longer I listened the more the whisper talking the lyrics came clear. I liked it.

  • Sam Bird

P.S. I am referring to “Money.” I still haven’t had a chance to listen to the album proper, but I will be seeing it performed live on June 15!
