Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, U2: Who will be nominated for Grammys tomorrow?

Categories: Grammys, Let's Argue!

Put on your thinkin’ caps, Mixers: This year’s Grammy Nomination Special — the exciting megamix version of what used to be a plain ol’ nominations announcement — is airing live on CBS tomorrow night. Who will hear their name called? It’s a crapshoot, and only one thing is for sure: We’ll be back here arguing about the results on Thursday!

There are several inevitabilities within the field of honorees, starting with the obvious: Seeing as how the Black Eyed Peas, Maxwell, and Sugarland are all slated to appear on the broadcast, it’s a safe bet we’ll see nominations for all three. (Unlikely to be feted: Nick Jonas and the Administration.) Another safe bet: Taylor Swift. After dominating the CMAs, AMAs, CMTs, VMAs, and every other acronymed ceremony, 2008′s Best New Artist nominee (and a performer who actually did walk away from the megamix empty-handed last year) will almost certainly get the chance to finally win something with a fully-spelled-out name. Only real suspense should come in how many nods she gets outside of the country categories — and how long it takes for her to get a MySpace video up documenting her flabbergasted reaction to the news. Lambert on 'Ellen': An almost-apology for his controversial AMAs performance

Pop icon-in-the-making Adam Lambert appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show today and gave offended audiences the closest thing yet to an apology for his American Music Awards performance over a week ago. The glimmery one told Ellen he hardly thought what he did—kissing his male keyboardist and simulating fellatio with dancers—was immoral, but he did allow that he “maybe went a little bit too far.”

“I forgot that this was the first time people were seeing me [performing] on TV again after Idol, and I didn’t really think about that as objectively as I might have wanted to,” he confessed with comfortable conviction. “Maybe that wasn’t the best first impression to make again… or the first second impression.”

According to the Idol runner-up, his own father even suggested a mea culpa, but Lambert felt the brouhaha was more about “taste” than “obscenity.” As he and Ellen discussed, late-night network television is hardly chaste. Without ever using the divisive word “hypocrisy,” Ad-Rock pointed out that people are used to seeing the “safe, friendly” gay pal on TV, not a libidinous, openly homosexual rock star prowling the stage like a disco wildcat.

Elvis Costello to spin a Bruce Springsteen set on Sirius XM Radio: We've got his playlist

Elvis Costello will take over Sirius XM’s all-Springsteen, all-the-time E Street Radio station next Friday to spin a few of his favorite Boss-related tunes. A rep for the satellite radio service has provided the Music Mix with a list of the songs the seasoned singer-songwriter chose, and it’s a nice little selection. Check it out after the jump: You’ve got a few early-to-mid-era Springsteen classics; Costello covering Springsteen’s “Brilliant Disguise” (hear it below); a song from Springsteen spouse and backup singer Patti Scialfa‘s most recent solo album; and a live cover of Jackie Wilson’s “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher” from the E Street Band’s Nov. 7 concert in NYC, where they were joined on stage by Costello.

The guest DJ set will air at 4 P.M. EST on Sirius XM’s E Street Radio next Friday, Dec. 11. If that’s not enough crossover for you, start getting excited for Springsteen’s upcoming appearances on Costello’s Sundance Channel interview/performance series Spectacle, airing Jan. 20 and 27. I attended the taping of those shows earlier this fall, and fans of either artist are in for a special treat — more on that soon. Will you be tuning in to either or both?

Snoop Dogg GPS: 'Sharp left, so fly!'

Categories: Snoop Dogg

After the confusion that a misunderstood Bob Dylan joke caused this summer, I can’t help being a little wary when I see reports of an iconic musician lending his or her voice to a GPS navigation system. I just checked with a rep for Snoop Dogg, though, and the clip you’ll find below (h/t Rap Radar) is 100% for rizzle. Yep, that’s the voice of big uncle Snoop himself telling drivers to “bear left…yeeeah, just like that.” What could possibly be more reassuring to hear if you’re lost on an unfamiliar road?

You can have all this for just $12.95 from Tom Tom GPS’ Voice Skins. (Warning: Clicking that link will auto-play a friendly greeting from Snoop Dogg.) If I had a car, I would so buy this product. What about you?

Michael Jackson tops 2009 Google and Yahoo search; beats Gaga, unseats Britney

Top engines Google, Yahoo, and Bing have revealed their most popular search terms this year, crowning the late King of Pop the king of online inquiries in 2009.

According to cnet, web traffic worldwide surged 11 percent immediately after his death in June—so much so that Google initially thought it was an attack on its service—and continued for weeks, making him only one of two individual entertainers on their Fastest Rising global searches (Facebook, Spanish social network Tuenti, Twitter and New Moon all came ahead of Lady Gaga in the top 10, though she beat Windows 7).

On Google Zeitgeist’s strictly-entertainment list, Eminem took the no. 3 position, Beyonce no. 5, and Gaga’s “Poker Face” lyrics landed at no. 10, while Amy Winehouse grabbed the booby prize (pun!), taking no. 5 on the Fastest Falling global searches.

Jackson also unseated four-years-running champ turned fifth-place finisher Britney Spears on Yahoo, and helped bump Miley Cyrus out of the top 10 altogether, though she still took the highest spot for most-searched Twitter, thanks to her now-famously-defunct account (Taylor Swift’s tweets grabbed third, behind Lance Armstrong).

What do you think these results say about the Year That Was, readers? Who will storm the list in 2010 (Justin Bieber? Ke$ha? Unknown Idol idols to come?), and who will fall off entirely?

Lupe Fiasco raps over Radiohead's 'National Anthem'

Categories: Lupe Fiasco, Radiohead

Rapping over Radiohead samples is an easy way to get Radiohead-loving rap fans like me to take note. If the emcee in question is super-smart Chicagoan Lupe Fiasco and the Radiohead track he’s borrowing is 2000′s fantastically unsettling “The National Anthem,” you bet I’m clicking through extra fast.

Such was the case for the second track from Lupe’s new mixtape Enemy of the State, released last week as, I can only assume, a very thoughtful Thanksgiving gift to yours truly. It doesn’t disappoint. Lupe’s flows are still some of the nicest going — so nimble that, like many of his songs, this one can take a few listens (and preferably a lyrics sheet) to catch all the double entendres, subversive sentiments, and extended metaphors he’s playing with. And he really lets the original Radiohead song breathe, working with its pummeling bass and freaky free-jazz horns in a way that I bet the Oxford wizards themselves would dig.

Check out Lupe Fiasco’s “The National Anthem” below (some NSFW imagery), and let us know what you think. And if you’re really a Radiohead-meets-rap connoisseur, which do you like better: This or 2007′s “Us Placers,” where Lupe, Kanye West, and Pharrell Williams sampled Radiohead leader Thom Yorke’s solo cut “The Eraser”?

Nick Jonas leaves the nest for solo tour

Mama Jonas may already have blown this one wide open back in October (gawd. MOM! so embarrassing), but 16-year-old Nick Jonas made the announcement official on his Twitter last night.

While the JoBros take an official four-week hiatus, our young Nicholas will embark on a series of live shows with his new band The Administration, beginning January 2 in Dallas, Texas and wrapping up in Berkeley, California on Jan. 30. Listen to a short sample below:

The band will get its national debut at the Grammy Nominations concert airing tomorrow night on CBS, but don’t look for more peach-fuzzed “I just got my learner’s permit” dreamboats to be standing behind la Jonas; his Administration bandmates include longtime session men like drummer Michael Bland keyboardist Tommy Barbarella, both onetime members of Prince’s New Power Generation.

As for older brothers Joe and Kevin? According to Twitter, they’re nothing but happy for him: “So excited about all the upcoming things for Nick and his new side project!” What do you think, Music Mixers—will the trio’s youngest member be lovebugged by his sweet taste of solo freedom? Or will he return to the bosom of brotherly love as soon as those 30 days are up?
