What did we leave off our list of Best Songs by 'American Idol' graduates?

This just in from the Department of American Idol Blasphemy: Earlier today, I posted a gallery of 28 of the best songs ever recorded by the show’s alumni, and my omission of not just one, but two Idol champs, as well as three Idol runners-up, resulted in the launching of many strongly worded emails and Tweets in my general direction. “You included LaKisha Jones but not **a*a *e*a***?” “How could you leave off *a*ha**ne ***hee?” “Where the heck is **be* S****a**?”  some of you demanded to know. And, to my shock, I even managed to offend myself by overlooking season 8’s tragically early evictee Deanna Brown and her bluesy little number “Sometime Ago,” from her recent indie release Traveler. (I’ve tried to make amends by embedding it below.) But hey, that’s how it goes when it comes to the graduates of American Idol U: There are former contestants out there making a whole lotta music, and when a definitive list of some sort or other gets compiled, there are gonna be inadvertent (and, yes, overt) omissions. Click here to check out our randomly ordered playlist, then head on down to the comments section below to tell us which songs and artists you think should’ve made the cut. (Yelling at your humble listmaker is both allowed and encouraged, as long as you follow me on Twitter @EWMichaelSlezak!)

    Permanent – David Cook

    • jordan

I definitely agree with Permanent. I’m not a big David Cook fan but that song is amazing. Also, I would put Because of You, Sober, and Already Gone way ahead of Thankful in regards to Kelly Clarkson. I also prefer Archuleta’s You Can over Crush. Underwood’s best is probably Jesus Take the Wheel or So Small for me (for her) :D.

Definitely agree in regards to Permanent and Because of You. I was really surprised that Because of you was not on the list. I think this is one of Kelly’s best songs.

THIS COMMENT ever so much. that song is amazing. (plus Lie. omg Lie live is amazing)

I agree with Michael that Bar-ba-sol is the highlight of the album. There are other great songs, like Lie, but nothing gets me going like an awesome rock anthem from our Idol rocker.

    OK, shame coming right up!

    – Carly Smithson. Come on, Slezak! Not you too, throwing her under the bus? Song: “Bury Me Alive” by We Are The Fallen. Rocks so much harder than the so-called generic soft-“rockers” (I’m looking at you, Daughtry!)
    – Lisa Leuschner. Before last season’s screwed-by-the-wildcard, there was Lisa, who wasn’t even ALLOWED to sing when she was brought back! Song: “Miss You.”
    – Leslie Hunt’s new stuff is pretty good. I always liked her. She had originality. And she does quirky so much better than certain other contestants (how’s it going, Megan Joy?) Song: “American Dream Man.”
    – Gina Glocksen. If you like Allison (and we all know that, Slezak), Gina was there first. Song: “List of Regrets.”

    Kelly Clarkson – “Sober”

Michael Johns – Heart On My Sleeve

    Chris Sligh – Empty Me

Mandisa has put out two solid albums, one of which was Grammy nominated.

  • Gwen

I’m just thrilled that you referenced Deanna Brown without mentioning her entire name. It nearly took you all day, but I knew it would happen.

Kelly Clarkson : Swap out “Thankful” for the extremely under-appreciated “Just Missed The Train” – amazing song. Also, Kelly herself included “Beautiful Disaster” on both her first and second album, yet it never hit the airways. It’s a gorgeous song. Off her new album, “Don’t Let Me Stop You” is killer.

David Cook: “Declaration” SHOULD have been a single, also “Avalanche” and hidden track “Kiss On The Neck” are stellar

    As for other Idols…

    Allison Iraheta: Beat Me Up

Michael Johns: Heart on My Sleeve

Kris Allen: Written All Over My Face

    • Christy

Just Missed the Train is an AWESOME song, my favs on that album were that one, Low, and Beautiful Disaster.

Re: “Just Missed The Train”…that song’s been covered numerous times, but the best version is the original, by Danielle Brisebois…she actually recorded it 3 times.

Latoya London – “State of My Heart”
Tamyra Gray – “The Only Thing”, “You Give Good Love”, “Faces”, “Like a Child”, “God Bless the Dreamer”

I enjoy Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone.” I was stoked to see “Hood Boy” make the list, but I also love “When I See U” from Fantasia.

My personal playlist would include Carrie Underwood’s “So Small,” Kris Allen’s “Alright With Me,” and Allison Iraheta’s acoustic “Don’t Waste the Pretty” (NOT the album version).

While we’re at it, throw in Kimberly Locke’s “Change,” Diana Degarmo’s “Emotional” (super cheesy, I know), Melinda Doolittle’s “It’s Your Love,” and Jordin Sparks’ “No Air.”

  • TJ

Danny Gokey “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me”

    • Jade

Dude, this is Slezak. Would you even think he’d put Gokey in the list?! Seriously?!

  • Geoff

Jennifer Hudson also has “Spotlight,” and the ridiculous but fun “All Dressed Up in Love.”

  • Jill

Kelly Clarkson’s “Save You” and “Cry”

  • Jason

Latoya London “Waiting for You.” People easily forget that she was season three’s most naturally talented singer. Sorry Fantasia lovers.

  • Eolra

Very unlike me, and did not sit well with critics, but I fell in love with Brooke White’s “Hold Up My Heart” after she sang it on the show last season. Blame it on a bad break-up but it hit me in all the right emo places.

Would like to see Kelly Clarkson “Behind These Hazel Eyes” and “Irvine” on this list…it is revealing that there are not more AI alumni songs that have become well known. More of them need to write their own songs or consider working with a single songwriter, to establish more distinctive catalogue.

I think that Kelly Clarkson’s Beautiful Disaster or Just Missed the Train should both be on there as while as Addicted! :) im a huge fan of Kelly Clarkson! Also Kellie Pickler’s Best Years of Your Life and Carrie Underwood’s Cowboy Cassanova! Also Diana Degarmo’s Emotional could have made the list.

  • frankie

    Kimberly Locke “8th world wonder”

I actually bought Taylor Hicks’ album but I dont think any of the songs merit being on the list
