'Yellow Submarine' casting rumors: Darth Maul IS Paul McCartney?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a quartet of actors are in negotiations to portray The Beatles in director Robert Zemeckis’ planned 3D remake of the 1968 film Yellow Submarine. The four thespians are Princess Bride star Cary Elwes who is apparently in the frame to impersonate George Harrison, Dean Lennox Kelly from the UK dramedy Shameless who will tackle John Lennon, Epic Movie actor Adam Campbell who will negotiate Ringo’s nasal vowels, and Peter Serafinowicz who will take on Paul McCartney. Serafinowicz’s credits include Shaun of the Dead, Couple’s Retreat, and the fantastic fake science show Look Around You, though there is a strong possibility that the words “He was the voice of Darth Maul” may appear on the Brit actor’s gravestone.

All in all, that seems like a line-up capable of handling the Fab Four’s Liverpudlian twang. They’re all Brits and Serafinowicz, in particular, is an accent master and Liverpool-raised to boot. Meanwhile, anyone crying “Foul!” over the idea of people impersonating John, Paul, George and Ringo, may care to note that the Beatles’ animated avatars in the original movie were also voiced by actors, with the Beatles themselves only contributing to a live action sequence at the end (see below).

Are you a big fan of the original movie? What do you think of these rumored casting choices? All together now!

Hopefully the cartoon version of Cary Elwes’ is a better actor than the real one.

      As … you …. wiiiiish…..

  • nick

    no thank you

  • Isolde

The Yellow Submarine doesn’t need to be remade. Has Hollywood really sunk so low? Seriously bad idea.

    • Kathy

Agree wholeheartedly. “Yellow Submarine” was a product of the times and should be left alone.
If you want to make a motion-capture Beatles film then write a new story.

  • Jose

Most unnecesary remake in existence. Mr. Zemikis, please work on the Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel instead.

    • YBKGirl

      Agreed!

      • Christine

        I totally agree with Jose!

  • D

I’ll take a pass on this one and I’m a huge Beatles fan.

  • Blanche

One, TWO, three, FAAA! I love Paul. And John, luv. What a great video clip.

  • thebuddharats

Dear Mr. Zemikis: Please kindly go and f**k up some other, already produced, less-cherished work. You will add absolutely NOTHING to The Yellow Submarine, as it is already perfect the way it is.

Please consider becoming a brain dead-paraplegic vegetable before you ruin a nice piece of The Beatles’ legacy.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit sequel would be nice.

Zemeckis’ last 3 films (Polar Express,Beowulf,A Christmas Carol) have been boring and at the same time, kinda creepy looking, motion captured animation doesnt work (unless you’re James Cameron). I dont think this new film will be any different…sigh, if only PIXAR had the chance to do this

oh let the negative birds fly free. Geezus I don’t know whats wrong with you people. First off this is great news for us true Beatles fans. Second every time Zemeckis makes a new Computer movie it just gets better, and better. thirdly Yellow Submarine had the coolest odd op-art style of the sixties, and will make for a wild ride. So be as negative as you like, but I for one am truly looking forward to this. Btw Zemeckis has brought us so many fantastic films that you people should have more faith in him. Oh while I’m ranting don’t you think that with the technological breakthroughs of Avatar, that Zemeckis will up his game. He has been trying to push the level of this style of film since Polar Express. so rock on Yellow Submarine

How much Blood can you scream from a Lemon? 5 Beatles, 1 black and the rest, well they’ll provide The world’s Stage for 50 years+ even though they’re music is 50 years+.)-dk

  • Jk

Well I adore the original, but I am interested in seeing what an update would look like. It can’t be any worse than “Across The Universe”.
I thought the original voice actors were still alive. If so, why can’t they do it?

    • Christine

JK, I loved Across the Universe.
      DJ, You are so right!

  • DJ

Why tamper with perfection? Leave the original alone! It’s part of the Beatles legacy and can’t be improved upon. They’re just going to mess it up.

  • Jean Genie

Why do they keep doing remakes instead of making new stories???? Is it just cheaper to do so?

    • mtraptor

      …yeah. It is.

  • Lana

Yeah, leave it alone. It’s perfect as it is. But I’d like to see a live-action Beatles movie with Jim Sturgess as Paul and Dan Radcliffe as Lennon. Haha! I swear, when John said “Singing!”he looked like the Potter kid with the specs on!
