Vampire Weekend tops the albums chart

It’s a grand day for indie rock, as Vampire Weekend have just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Go ahead and hoist a refreshing glass of horchata in their honor. The preppy foursome sold 124,000 copies of their sophomore album Contra, according to Nielsen SoundScan — a nice number that, combined with weak retail competition, was enough to make them the biggest band in the nation for at least one week. Considering that the No. 1 spot generally belongs to major-label acts like Ke$ha and Susan Boyle, it’s impressive to see a scrappy young indie group pull this off. (Contra came out on XL Recordings.) In fact, this is only the 12th time an independent release has topped Billboard‘s flagship chart since the SoundScan era began in 1991.

Speaking of Susan Boyle, I Dreamed a Dream stayed at No. 2 by selling 77,000 copies. Barring any surprises, her lengthy reign on this chart would seem to have reached a definitive end. Meanwhile, last week’s chart-topper, Ke$ha, slipped to No. 3 with 67,000 copies sold of Animal in its second week.

Aside from Vampire Weekend, it was a quiet week for new releases. R&B crooner Omarion’s alliteratively titled Ollusion landed at No. 19, with 19,000 copies sold; no other new albums made the Top 20.

What do you think of Vampire Weekend’s chart triumph? How far do you think they’ll drop next week? Sound off in the comments, below.

How Linkin Park put together their Haiti charity album in just one week

It is just a week since the Haiti earthquake. But you can now buy a Haiti-benefiting charity album of previously unreleased material by, amongst others, Dave Matthews Band, the All-American Rejects, Peter Gabriel, Slash, and Alanis Morissette.

The compilation is called Download to Donate and was overseen by Linkin Park, whose non-profit foundation Music for Relief has a history of providing aid to the country.

“Just last Monday, I was saying how I would like to start directing more of Music For Relief’s attention to Haiti and developing some sustainable housing,” says Linkin Park bassist David “Phoenix” Farrell. “Then the earthquake happened Tuesday, and we really started scrambling to figure out a way that we could garner as much support from the music community as we could to hopefully raise a ton of money for the cause.”

Linkin Park’s own musical contribution is a track called “Not Alone,” which they recorded during sessions for the band’s 2007 CD Minutes To Midnight, though the vocal tracks were never finished. “When the opportunity to do this started coming together, Mike [Shinoda] and Chester [Bennington] got back in the studio,” says Phoenix. “I believe they finished the vocals at 3am on Sunday morning.”

Over the past few days Wyclef Jean’s Yéle Haiti charity has come under criticism for alleged mismanagement of funds (the Fugee denies using any of Yéle’s money for his own personal benefit). But Phoenix is adamant that all of the money raised by Download to Donate—which is available for purchase on a pay-what-you-like basis—will go to worthy causes. “It’s a very low cost charity,” he says.”For this, 100% of the money Music For Relief raises is going to a couple of different charities: the UN Foundation and Habitat for Humanity. And Dave Matthews Band brought their BAMA Works relief effort into the mix as well. 100% of what we raise is going towards those different efforts.”

But Phoenix says that at present the band have no plans to play a benefit show. “We couldn’t,” he says. Couldn’t? That sounds ominous. Is a member of Linkin Park in jail somewhere? “We’re in a down cycle right now where we’re writing and recording,” he explains. “So we probably couldn’t get something together quick enough. No, as of an hour ago, everyone is still a free citizen.”

New Los Campesinos video, 'Romance Is Boring': Wife beats husband to death. Yawn.

Welsh indie darlings Los Campesinos! just premiered the video for the title track from their upcoming third album Romance Is Boring, a cheekily savage clip of a Stepford wife beating her trailer trash husband to death with a baseball bat. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all game for mariticide, but couldn’t they come up with a more whimsical murder weapon than a bat? Haven’t these uber-literate rockers read Roald Dahl’s “Lamb to the Slaughter”?

The video begins with a busty June Cleaver-disciple decorating a chocolate cake while her inattentive husband chugs down brewskies and howls at her and the TV. After crying some thick mascara tears, the wife goes Beatrix Kiddo on her man and bludgeons him to death while their kid watches. As this is an indie rock video, the child is naturally dressed like some sort of glammy kabuki superhero and unperturbed by the violence. Check it out here:

Stephen Gately: Is the new Boyzone video a fitting tribute to the late singer?

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

The Irish band Boyzone’s new single “Gave It All Away” features the late Stephen Gately, who died of natural causes last October at the age of 33. The band has just released the video for the Mika-penned song which also contains footage of Gately and which Boyzone member Ronan Keating has described as, “incredibly raw.” You can watch the video below.

Boyzone has never been that big a band in the US. But when we ran an item about Stephen Gately’s death it generated a huge response. So do Boyzone fans out there think this is a fitting way to remember the singer? Let us know.

Susan Boyle tells Oprah her hospitalization was 'a chapter of my life that is over with now'

Susan Boyle’s visit to The Oprah Winfrey Show just aired, and it was…well, pretty much exactly what you’d expect if you’ve seen any of Boyle’s other TV appearances. Boyle began with a typically clear-voiced rendition of the inspirational tune “Who I Was Born To Be” (sample lyric: “I’ve got the world in my hands, and it feels like my turn to fly”), followed by a short interview. Promos for the show suggested Boyle would come clean to Oprah about her hospitalization after losing Britain’s Got Talent last year; in fact that topic was dealt with rather briefly, with Boyle calling her three-day stay in a London hospital for exhaustion “a chapter of my life that is over with now.” And just like that, she was on to teaching Oprah how to do the “Boyle Wiggle,” a dance that looks like hula-hooping without the hoop. Major takeaway of their conversation: “Dreams can come true.”

Did you watch Susan Boyle on Oprah? What did you think? Let us know in the comments.

New Taylor Swift song, 'Today Was a Fairytale': Listen here

The Tay-Tay-squared love affair that bloomed on the set of the upcoming Valentines Day may have withered on the vine, but Taylor Swift still has her heart—or at least a new song, and her first big-screen role—in the everyone-with-a-SAG-card-get-in-the-pool romantic comedy, due in theaters February 12.

The track “Today Was a Fairytale” is available today on iTunes; listen to a minute-and-a-half clip below:

Not a big departure here for T-Swift; in fact, the lyrics—”you were the prince/I used to be the damsel in distress” and “I wore a dress/you wore a dark grey t-shirt”—are mighty reminiscent of two previous hits: “Love Story” and “You Belong with Me,” respectively. The t-shirt’s just on the other foot, so to speak.

However! She is a 20-year-old self-made millionairess with gold statuettes lining her kitchen cupboards like cans of Dinty Moore stew, and we are broke, bitter journalists, so what do we know? The song sounds Taylor-made (oh, the wit!) for her fans, and we’re just happy she’s still sweet, neat, and 98359 times more age-appropriate than Noah Cyrus. But please do tell us your take in the comments section below.

Kate McGarrigle dies at age 63

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Very sad news: Kate McGarrigle has died, her manager confirms. The beloved Canadian folk singer was 63. The CBC reports that she passed away on Jan. 18 after fighting a rare cancer.

McGarrigle first found fame in the 1970s, performing songs in French and English with her older sister Anna, often billed as the McGarrigle Sisters. From the start, they reveled in creating the kind of perfectly matched vocal harmonies that only a pair of talented siblings can pull off. More voices joined the chorus when Kate McGarrigle’s children Rufus and Martha Wainwright (born during her marriage to singer Loudon Wainwright III) joined the family trade and began careers of their own in later years. Kate McGarrigle went on to perform frequently with her sister and kids, helping introduce a new generation of fans to her work. This writer was lucky enough to see them all on stage more than once, most recently at Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday celebration last May. You can watch a clip of McGarrigle and Rufus performing “Over the Rainbow” last July after the jump.

“When inevitably I read today in the papers that my mother lost her battle with cancer last night, I am filled with an immense desire to add that this battle, though lost, was tremendously fruitful during these last three and a half years of her life,” Rufus Wainwright said in a statement posted online. “She witnessed her daughter’s marriage, the creation of my first opera, the birth of her first grandchild Arcangelo, and gave the greatest performance of her life to a packed crowd at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Not to mention traveling to some of the world’s most incredible places with both my sister, her husband Brad, my boyfriend Jorn and myself. Yes, it was all too brief, but as I was saying to her sister Anna last night while sitting by her body after the struggle had ceased, there is never enough time and she, my amazing mother with whom everyone fell in love, went out there and bloody did it. I will miss you mother, my sweet and valiant explorer, lebwohl and adio. X”

The Music Mix extends its condolences to Kate McGarrigle’s family, friends, and fans. Please share your memories of her in the comments section.

Thom Yorke at Coachella: Why he's officially billed as 'Thom Yorke????'

The third night of this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival promises to be particularly excellent, with headlining cartoon primates Gorillaz supported by acts including a reunited Pavement and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke. Or, as the official festival poster released today identifies him, “Thom Yorke????”

What’s with all the question marks? No big mystery. Yorke is definitely playing Coachella on Sunday, April 18. His reps tell the Music Mix that he intends to perform with the same backing band he assembled for a handful of Los Angeles dates last fall (pictured) — Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, producer Nigel Godrich, and seasoned session hands Joey Waronker and Mauro Refosco. Yorke never got around to naming the new band back then, resulting in some mysterious marquee displays around L.A., and now he’s decided to stick with the same question marks to indicate those guys’ presence.

The timing of the announcement is interesting, considering that Radiohead were reportedly planning to get back to work on their eighth album right about now. (His reps wouldn’t say anything about how those plans are progressing.) Dare we dream that he might have some more new Radiohead material to debut by April? Either way, I just hope Yorke — with or without the question mark gang — books a date a little closer to the East Coast soon. I’m going crazy over here!

Any other diehard fans feeling the same way? Or are you lucky enough to be seeing Thom Yorke???? at Coachella this spring?

Coachella 2010 lineup announced: Jay-Z, Muse, Pavement, Thom Yorke and dozens more

Tagged:

The lineup for the eleventh edition of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which takes place this April 16-18, has officially arrived, and it’s about as hot as the sometimes triple-digit temperatures the Southern California festival is known for.

Headliners Jay-Z, Thom Yorke and the recently reunited indie-rock demigods Pavement join a host of indie-kid all-stars (MGMT, Muse, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Passion Pit, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, Florence and the Machine), as well as formative Brit icons (Public Image Limited, the Specials, Echo & the Bunnymen, Gary Numan), and assorted rarely-seen-live legends (Sly and the Family Stone, De La Soul, Grace Jones, Faith No More).

Not on the list? Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Leonard Cohen, Daft Punk, and the Beastie Boys, all whom were at one point rumored (or just very fervently wished for). But Coachella is known for its surprises—Prince in 2008, Kanye in ’06, Beck in ’04—so a last-minute shazam of some kind is nearly standard at this point.

One question: Why are “virtual band” Gorillaz listed as the official Sunday headliners over Pavement, Thom Yorke, and even Yo La Tengo? They, like Soylent Green, are nominally made out of people (including Blur’s Damon Albarn and Tank Girl creator Jamie Hewlett), but their top billing feels odd, considering the bonanza of talent on the festival’s last-day lineup.

Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard pairs up with Franz Ferdinand; stream their new track

Obscenely jolie Parisian actress Marion Cotillard (she of the 2008 Best Actress Oscar and red-carpet mermaid-enhood) has paired up with arch Scottish post-punkers Franz Ferdinand on a new original song.

“Eyes of Mars,” created to promote a handbag for the vaunted French fashion house Dior, can be streamed here at ladydior.com.

Cotillard, bless her coeur, is not really a chanteuse, her two numbers in the star-stuffed Nine notwithstanding; but she works out the sort of breathy, “zut alors! I am far too sexy for pitch control” coo that revered Gallic pop lizard Serge Gainsbourg coaxed from his own movie star muses in the ’60s and ’70s.

What do you think, Music Mixers—does France Ferdinand have a musical future? Or should Cotillard keep it on le silver screen?
