Teddy Pendergrass: Stars pay their respects to the late soul legend

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

Musicians have been paying their respects via Twitter to soul legend Teddy Pendergrass, who died yesterday.

“Celebrate our legends while they’re still with us,” wrote R&B singer Tyrese, “I spent many weeks with him. Teddy I HONOR you and Thank You for making R&B Raspy Sexy!!” Roots drummer ?uestlove, who, like Pendergrass, hails from Philadelphia, noted that, “soul will never be the same.” Jazzy Jeff, another Philadelphian, recalled how “Teddy gave me advice when I 1st started…very sad day.” Finally, Keri Hilson wrote simply, “RIP Teddy Pendergrass.”

'Jersey Shore' earns juicy tribute tune from Sarah Bareilles? Fuggetaboutit. Or don't!

Left-field hit-maker Sara Bareilles (you know, the one who wasn’t going to write us a love song) has penned her own loving tribute to the cast of MTV’s Jersey Shore. Watch her perform it live here, but beware some NSFW language (hey, it’s a Jersey Shore tribute, what did you expect?)

Set to the tune of Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” Bareilles tells a Christmas-themed Joisey tale from the perspective of Snooki, The Situation and the rest of our grammatically-challenged, follicularly spectacular friends. With lines like “I have perfect abs/They’re above my crabs,” this might not become her next chart-topping hit, but it certainly has a future in the viral video vein.

What do you think? Does it make you laugh/giggle/guffaw or is it time we all lay off the poor, persecuted stars of the Garden State?

Jay Reatard: Friends and colleagues respond to his death

Filed under: News and tagged:

Those who knew Jay Reatard have been responding to the news of the singer’s shocking death.

“This is very sad news,” Spoon frontman Britt Daniel said in a statement. “Jay was a one-of-a-kind guy with an incredible spirit. He was a great rock and roller. He will be sorely missed.” (Spoon and Reatard shared a stage more than once, most recently at a Dec. 31, 2009 show in Milwaukee.)

“We want to express our condolences to the friends and family of Jay Reatard, on his sudden passing today,” the Pixies said in a post on their Facebook page.

“Jay was what few people have the capacity to be,” Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox wrote in a blog post. “He created an undeniably classic album that contained so much pain transferred to tape in such an explosive way that it made you feel different after hearing it. He was transgressive and honest…I am truly sickened to see him go.” (Cox and Reatard’s work together included covering each other’s music.)

Jered Gummere, frontman of The Ponys and a friend of Reatard’s, wrote via email, “It’s so hard to sum up a friendship in one sentence, but the thing I will always remember is he put every ounce of his soul and every emotion he had in every song he ever wrote. I love him like a brother.”

Alex Hammond, who made the 2009 Jay Reatard documentary Waiting for Something, told EW that, when she filmed the singer in the spring of last year, the director, “had an amazing time with him. He was an incredible philosopher, he had a heart, and I think a lot of people from the outside didn’t see that side of him. We had this feeling when we were with him that he wanted to do bigger and better things. So this is completely shocking.” Hammond’s co-director Ian Markiewicz was equally stunned by the news. “My first thought was that I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “He was a really extroverted, crazy, kind of personality. But at the same kind he was really grounded. Jay was like no other.”

Mary J. Blige: Watch an intimate, intense performance of the 'Precious' anthem 'Color' exclusively here

Mary J—a lady who knows a thing or two about personal struggles—turned out one of 2009′s most affecting anthems with “Color,” the yearning, torchy ballad used to devastating effect in the critically acclaimed drama Precious.

Through January 17, Sirius XM Radio is honoring the queen of hip-hop soul with an official “Mary J. Blige Week,” seven days of special programming featuring interviews, archival clips and new music hosted by MJB herself.

Few can do drama like Ms. No More Drama; watch an exclusive video clip of Blige’s raw, intimate take on “Color” in the Sirius XM studio (the audio originally aired on Sirius in December, and re-airs this Sunday on The Heat at 6pm EST)—and her dramatic personal response to the film:

Danny Gokey, country music singer! (Are you buying it yet?)

American Idol finalist Danny “Put the Go In” Gokey was bound to land somewhere, and as much as I’d like to pretend it’s not true, Nashville was the logical place. Oh sure, he’s about as down-home as my Swatch collection, but for whatever reason, country is now the catchall genre for generic adult contemporary types attempting to make a commercial splash rather than an artistic one. So how’s it going? Well, his treacly first swing at a single, “It’s Only,” went nowhere at all. Now, his slight improvement of a second single (which they are calling his first), the awkwardly-titled “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me,” debuted at No. 55 on the country charts. Progress!

What do you think, Mixers? Anyone besides Team Gokey Superfans from last season’s Idol run on board with this dude as a “country” singer? Do you, like me, wish the Nashville gatekeepers would quit trying to make a quick buck off folks like this and get back to shepherding legit artists? You can hear both singles on his MySpace page, and before you weigh in, don’t forget to watch my interview with Gokey from last fall’s Country Music Awards, after the jump. (Sorry about the Twilight question; it was the night before New Moon opened, and we all have our marching orders, okay?) READ FULL STORY »

Jay Reatard dies at age 29

Filed under: News and tagged:

Acclaimed indie rocker Jay Reatard has died at age 29. His label, Matador Records, confirmed his passing in an online post: “We are devastated by the death of Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr., aka Jay Reatard. Jay was as full of life as anyone we’ve ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist. We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly.” Details on the manner and cause of his death were not immediately available, but one newspaper is reporting that he was found dead at home in Memphis at 3:30 this morning.

This awful news is doubly tragic because of where Jay was in his career. 2010 should have been a banner year for him. After years of building buzz for his releases on tiny labels, the prolific Memphis native had recently signed with big-time indie Matador Records, which released his excellent LP Watch Me Fall last August. That record’s blend of punk attitude and indelible melodies won him many rave reviews, including one published in EW. In that review, I called Watch Me Fall “a bravura performance that ought to win this blog favorite the widespread recognition his songcraft deserves.” It was clear from an outside listener’s perspective that Jay’s songwriting was evolving at an exponential rate, and it’s simply too sad for words that we’ll never get to hear what he would have done next.

We at the Music Mix extend our genuine condolences to the friends and family of this talented artist. Please share your thoughts and memories of Jay Reatard in the comments section below.

M.I.A. leaks new track via Twitter video; stream it here

Maternity leave, ovah. Nearly a year after her last high-profile national appearance—nine months pregnant and swaggering at the ’09 Grammys with Jay-Z, Kanye, et al in this demure little number—agit-rock culture-jammer turned ubiquitous movie soundtracker M.I.A. has returned with a new track, posted via TwitVid. Oh, the technology!

Stream the clip, cryptically titled “THERES SPACE FOR OL DAT I SEE,” below:

Kick-off sirens aside, it could very well be a lullaby for little Ikhyd, no? No Clash-samples-and-cash-registers “Paper Planes” banger steez, just a sort of hazy, spooky 2001 fever dream—”My lines are down you can’t call me / as I float around in space all I see.”

It’s the first pin to drop from her upcoming third album, this summer’s still-untitled, Blaqstarr-produced follow-up to Kala. Is it good to see M.I.A. missing in action no more?

'NOW That's What I Call Love': Hinder's 'Lips of an Angel' for Valentine's Day? Really?!

There are plenty of questionable song choices on NOW That’s What I Call Love (out Jan. 26), which a press release sent this morning bills as “A PERFECT VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT” featuring “20 unforgettable love songs from today’s top artists.” I mean, Hoobastank’s “The Reason”? David Cook’s “Light On”? They might as well have called this thing NOW That’s What I Call Mediocre Adult-Contemporary Rock, am I right?

But one item on the track list really sticks out for me, and that’s Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel.” In case you’re lucky enough to have forgotten it, “Lips of an Angel” is a turgid power ballad about wanting to cheat on one’s current partner with an ex. You know, “My girl’s in the next room/Sometimes I wish she was you.” “Girl, you make it hard to be faithful.” That one. And this is supposed to be romantic?! If your significant other gives you this song about itching to hook up with someone else on Valentine’s Day — or any other day, for that matter — you might be justified in dumping him or her immediately.

I don’t even like Valentine’s Day, but I’m pretty sure “Lips of an Angel” makes a mockery of everything that ridiculous pseudo-holiday stands for. Am I the only one? Watch the song below if you must, click through to the jump for the full lineup of NOW That’s What I Call Love songs, then sound off in the comments section.

Adam Lambert's 'Whataya Want from Me': Watch preview clips for the new video here

Forget the leather-clad fantasia (snakes! spikes! fancy walking sticks!) of La Lambert’s last small-screen effort, “For Your Entertainment”—on his Pink-penned third single “Whataya Want from Me,” Idol‘s most fantabulous runner-up is looking decidedly un-Adamy:

Wherefore art thou, Glammy Glambert? This young man with the lycra-free garments and low-product hair and mere smidgen of eyeliner, we know him not. Perhaps it is his second cousin, Glumbert.

But hark! What have we here? Ah yes, a sharp suit! The hair has met its good friend Molding Paste yet again, and rises like a Phoenix from the ashes! I think I smell eyebrow powder. Senor Glammy, he returns: READ FULL STORY »

Ke$ha dethrones Susan Boyle on the albums chart

Filed under: News and tagged: , ,

We all knew this moment was coming, but now it’s really here: Susan Boyle‘s I Dreamed a Dream is no longer the No. 1 album in the country, for the first time since just after Thanksgiving. That honor goes instead to Ke$ha, who bowed atop the Billboard 200 albums chart with 152,000 copies sold of her Animal, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Boyle sold 93,000, small potatoes for her after the past few weeks, but good enough for No. 2.

Ke$ha’s was the only new release that made it into this week’s Top 20. The next-highest chart debut came from Idol alum Katharine McPhee down at No. 27, with a weak 15,000 copies sold of her Unbroken.

A few other notable chart performances: Rihanna hasn’t yet found a new smash single, but she’s showing staying power on the albums chart. Rated R climbed to No. 11 (from No. 14 last week) with 27,000 in new sales. Lil Wayne’s Young Money crew is hanging on, too, selling an additional 26,000 copies of We Are Young Money for a No. 13 finish. And Lady Antebellum continue to sell loads of their self-titled 2008 debut; with their next album due in just a couple of weeks, their old one moved another 24,000 units to place at No. 17.

How long do you think Ke$ha will last at the top? Could Boyle come roaring back, or has she seen her final week at No. 1? Make your predictions below.
