Heidi Montag says new album cost almost $2 million, left her broke, is as good as 'Thriller'

It’s taken three years, nearly $2 million, and one very questionable Miss Universe pageant performance, but Heidi Montag, star of the The Hills and wife of reality villain Spencer Pratt, finally released her debut album yesterday. Superficial, which Montag and Pratt are putting out on their own label, is an electro-pop collection of 12 tracks with party-friendly titles like “One More Drink” and “Hey Boy.” Montag chatted with EW about the album’s delay, her monetary issues, and why she thinks Superficial is as good as Thriller.

EW: Why did it take three years to put this together?

HEIDI MONTAG: Well, I did it independently. If you look back at the superstars throughout history it used to take that long to put albums together. Now it’s more manufactured. I really wanted to take my time, and every song means so much to me. And every song was a true journey. I had to track down the songs myself, because it was just Spencer and I doing it independently. We really took our time with every single process, because we wanted it to be the highest quality possible. I wanted it to be back to the Thriller days, to that kind of sound. It’s timeless music, so whenever it comes out was the right timing.

EW: Do you think Superficial holds up against something like Thriller?

HM: I definitely do. I think people might not see it now, because it’s my first album coming out. But I’ve spent as much time–maybe more, even–than Thriller. Every detail was very important to me, because I take this very seriously. Most artists, it’s not their own money, but I’ve actually gone broke putting every dollar I’ve ever made and my heart and soul into this music. For me, I have a different appreciation, a different understanding, and a different love of my music and for my album than any other artist possibly could. Because this is my money. This is my gamble. This is my chance.

'Yellow Submarine' casting rumors: Darth Maul IS Paul McCartney?

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a quartet of actors are in negotiations to portray The Beatles in director Robert Zemeckis’ planned 3D remake of the 1968 film Yellow Submarine. The four thespians are Princess Bride star Cary Elwes who is apparently in the frame to impersonate George Harrison, Dean Lennox Kelly from the UK dramedy Shameless who will tackle John Lennon, Epic Movie actor Adam Campbell who will negotiate Ringo’s nasal vowels, and Peter Serafinowicz who will take on Paul McCartney. Serafinowicz’s credits include Shaun of the Dead, Couple’s Retreat, and the fantastic fake science show Look Around You, though there is a strong possibility that the words “He was the voice of Darth Maul” may appear on the Brit actor’s gravestone.

All in all, that seems like a line-up capable of handling the Fab Four’s Liverpudlian twang. They’re all Brits and Serafinowicz, in particular, is an accent master and Liverpool-raised to boot. Meanwhile, anyone crying “Foul!” over the idea of people impersonating John, Paul, George and Ringo, may care to note that the Beatles’ animated avatars in the original movie were also voiced by actors, with the Beatles themselves only contributing to a live action sequence at the end (see below).

Are you a big fan of the original movie? What do you think of these rumored casting choices? All together now!

Ke$ha, poised to unseat Susan Boyle, takes a pre-emptive victory lap on 'Lopez Tonight'

It won’t be 100% official until Nielsen SoundScan numbers are released tomorrow morning, but decadent dance phenom Ke$ha is almost certainly about to evict Susan Boyle from the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Ke$ha’s Animal is looking like such a sure thing for No. 1 that Billboard itself is confidently predicting an “easy win” over Boyle, who has ruled that chart for the past six weeks.

Bear that in mind as you watch the chart-queen-to-be’s appearance on George Lopez’s talk show last night (below). First, the Lopez Tonight host asked about her arrival in this world of ours, which he seemed to think involved her mother literally giving birth in the middle of a raging rave. “She wasn’t at a party, she threw a party,” Ke$ha clarified. “She invited all of her friends over, and they were just kicking it, and then all of a sudden I, like, flew out.” This is a very important distinction. Then Ke$ha taught Lopez how to brush his teeth with a bottle of Jack Daniels, just like she does in the opening lyrics of her hit “TiK ToK.” Finally, she performed “TiK ToK” (clip after the jump) — slightly underwhelming in a live context, oh well.

Sade Strikes Back! The '80s soul star unleashes a surge of dancing desert soldiers

British soul band Sade—yep, “Smooth Operator” Sade is a band—is back from a ten-year hiatus with the video for “Soldier of Love,” the first single from their upcoming album of the same name. What has lead singer Sade Adu been doing for the last decade? Perhaps traveling coast-to-coast, L.A. to Chicago on foot? Who knows, but as you can see from the moody video below, she hasn’t lost any of her enigmatic aura.

“Soldier of Love” is a laid-back R&B jam dolled up with some Ennio Morricone flourishes, and appropriately enough the video is set in the desert, or as she calls it here, “the hinterland of my devotion.” Dressed like Trinity from The Matrix and doing some lasso work George Bailey would be jealous of, Sade performs against a backdrop of barren red desert and menacingly cloudy skies. (Maybe she’s a fan of Dune, too.) Accompanying her is a troupe of backup dancers doing things desert soldiers are wont to do, like military-march-styled dance moves and synchronized push-ups.

What do you think—is this tune worth the ten-year wait? And how about the video? Does it hold a flare gun to Rihanna’s “Hard” video, which also featured army-tastic dancing in the desert?

Justin Timberlake protege Matt Morris: Listen here and weigh in!

Singer-songwriter and Mickey Mouse Club vet Matt Morris releases his debut tomorrow, titled When Everything Breaks Open, on Justin Timberlake’s Tennman Records (an affiliate of Interscope). It’s worth noting that Morris co-wrote Kelly Clarkson’s “Miss Independent,” but those looking for hardcore pop here are likely to be disappointed: Timberlake produced the record alongside the multi-faceted Charlie Sexton, and the latter’s influence is certainly all over the bluesy feel of the tracks available on Morris’s MySpace page — especially de facto first single, “Money,” the recording of which you can hear a snippet of above.

Morris has a pleasant, supple voice, and a light style that places him square in the center of the current boy-folk crop of John Mayers and Eric Hutchinsons and Mason Jenningses (though the latter’s more or less moved on of late). Not sure if he’s likely to find more than a cult following and a few Grey’s Anatomy spots, but he’s certainly got the lineage to do much more. What do you think, Mixers? Is to your liking?

Flea, ZZ Top, and Andrew W.K.'s reworking of the 'Simpsons' theme tune: Best. Cover of a TV show song. Ever?

Last night’s Morgan Spurlock-fronted Simpsons documentary began with Andrew W.K., ZZ Top and Flea, amongst others, playing the yellow ones’ theme song (and also featured Moby’s cheesily wonderful hip-hop reworking by of Homer’s “Mr Plow” jingle). But was their version the best TV show theme tune cover of all-time? Well, let’s consider the competition.

The first stop when exploring this small but colorful patch of pop’s rich pageant has to be the 1995 CD Saturday Morning: Cartoons’ Greatest Hits on which Juliana Hatfield and Tanya Donelly tackled the theme song from Josie and the Pussycats, the Butthole Surfers infused “Underdog” with their own particular brand of terpsichorel dementia and Matthew Sweet asked, with Byrdsian sweetness, “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?”

Outside of that, I’ve always personally loved the Dickies’ version of the Banana Splits song, or “The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana)” to give the sucker its unnecessarily full title. Apparently someone involved with the forthcoming  superhero movie “Kick Ass” agrees as the track features heavily in the film’s foul-mouthed, hyper-violent red band trailer. Also worthy of your attention is Jamie Foxx’s version of The Brady Bunch theme song, a reinterpretation deliberately designed to assist his courting of the laydeez. Rather less smooch-inducing are the various covers of the M*A*S*H* tune—AKA “Suicide Is Painless”—by the likes of the Manic Street Preachers and Marilyn Manson.

We’ve embedded a selection of clips after the break. Check them out and tell us which you think is the best. What covers of TV theme tunes have we forgotten?

'Badder Romance': Watch the Lady Gaga-approved YouTube spoof

What would a humble fan have to do to earn a mention on Lady Gaga’s official Twitter account? Try re-creating one of her freaky videos shot-by-shot. Hey, it worked when a few friends named Britnee, Ian, Nikki, and Kayla (a.k.a. BINKproductionz) took on Gaga’s “Bad Romance” for a YouTube parody they called “Badder Romance.”

Sure, the BINK buddies don’t have anything close to Gaga’s wardrobe budget or lip-syncing skills. But who needs those when you have this much enthusiasm for the source material? Their handiwork elicited a “holy s—” from Gaga herself, who posted a link to the YouTube clip on Twitter last night. Check out “Badder Romance” below (NSFW language in the blooper reel that follows the video) and let us know how you think it compares to Lady Gaga’s original.

Roisin Murphy Q&A: The Irish diva talks about her newborn daughter and why she's delaying pulling an album together

These are busy times for Irish electro-pop chanteuse Roisin Murphy. She gave birth to her first child, Clodagh Henwood, not even a month ago, and on January 18th she will release a new single called “Momma’s Place,” which you can hear on her myspace (Geisha-styled artwork and proof of her pregnancy is to the left). Murphy describes the song as an “old school house track,” and it provides just as much moody joy as its recent predecessor, “Orally Fixated.”

Murphy took some time to talk to us while taking a break in the Irish countryside and told us the ways pregnancy has affected her music, how her new single is a bit of a tell-off to her newborn daughter, and the reasons why we might not actually get a new Roisin album this year, as fans have been expecting.

EW: Congratulations on the addition to your family. How is motherhood treating you?

RM: Thank you. Fine. If I could get any sleep in the nighttime or daytime, it would be perfect. But everything in life that’s worth doing throws a challenge at you. It’s hard to say because I’m kind of in a non-real place at the moment: I’m in Ireland, I’m surrounded by my family and it’s not my real everyday life in London. So to know how it’s completely changed me, I guess I’ll have to be settled back in London for a little while. I’m still doing the nightshift, I’m still being the mom, but I’m not in the world of the media, not working, not doing fashion shows and gigs, I’m in the country, in Ireland, so I’m away from all of that. So I’m not in my real, everyday existence. I’m in a transitional stage.

EW: How did the idea of motherhood and being pregnant influence album?
