Vampire Weekend love Lady Gaga? Hear them explain their unexpected adoration

Last week, indie band Vampire Weekend recorded a co-hosting appearance on Sirius Radio’s SIRIUS XMU channel (their latest album, Contra, recently landed atop the Billboard 200).

During a conversation that spanned several topics, host Jenny Eliscu asked the Vampire boys who their favorite secret music indulgence was, and keyboardist/guitairst Rostam Batmanglij offered up a rather surprising (for him!), answer: “Pretty much everything by Lady Gaga,” Batmanglij said. When Eliscu said she took issue with Gaga, claiming there’s “no there there,” Batmanglij defended the pop princess, explaining that she’s helping teenagers know that “they shouldn’t feel like a freak. That’s something I personally can relate to. And so I think it is meaningful. I think what she is doing is meaningful.” Well put, Rostam!

Listen to the full, Lady Gaga-infused segment below, and be sure to stick around for their rendition of “Bad Romance” at the end. Then tune in every day this week from 5 to 6pm to hear the show (SIRIUS channel 26 and XM channel 43).

Does this revelation make you love Vampire Weekend even more? Do you smell a freaky Vampire-Gaga collab coming on? I say: Bring it!

Love!! My two favorite artists in a possible callabo would be amazing! I would also like to hear VW actually cover Bad Romance. That has potential to be brilliant!

  • Vamp

VW would do a killer Lady Gaga cover. I’m with Rostam- any single by Gaga- can’t go wrong.

  • Thomas

Love it. Love them both. If they collaborated, it would be amazing!!

  • Jen

I like the idea of Gaga so much more than her music which is a shame.

  • Fatima

I don’t get why this is “unexpected” in the slightest.

  • nate

I love that Vampire Weekend calls her out for being such an elitist about her music tastes – “Is she too prevalent from the culture?”

  • donna

    gaga sucks a lot
gaga is only loved by teen ppl in 20s love madonna.gaga will never be madonna.shes a freak. loser

    • mari

i remember when madonna was only loved by teen people as well (since i was one of them). let’s not sell gaga short just yet. that’s what the “older” generation did to madonna and look at what she has accomplished.

    • Q

I’m 35 and love gaga, as do all my friends and co-workers. Madonna herself loves gaga. Seems like you’ve got your facts all wrong today.

    • Scorpio Man

I’m 53. I think Lady gaga is he most talented artist to come along in a while. Don’t sell her short. she is only getting started.

    • Jungle Jim

I’m 50 and I love Lady Gaga’s music. She is much more talented than Madonna.

  • Julie

I am so not a fan of pop music, but I ADORE lady gaga.

  • Ramo

Yeah I’m not sure why this should this be so surprising. Lady Gaga has gone from at first being a novelty in the eyes of many to now being a serious and respectable musician/artist who has earned some serious cred through her work and performances. I hate this perception that “cool” indie bands/musicians shouldn’t be expected to enjoy someone as popular as Gaga just because they’re popular. That’s a silly elitist presumption.

wow, Jenny Eliscu is a pill. Put down the Gerturde Stein books and listen to some fun music. And I love that she judges LG for having no “there there”, but has never head of “Bad Romance”.

That Jenny is the worst. Frankly, there’s no there there with Jenny.

    • George Stoyonovich

Please, do NOT put down the Gertrude Stein books. Listen to some fun music at the same time. They’re not mutually exclusive!

  • i’m a lady

i get the whole ‘embrace your inner freak’ thing, but there is a difference between embracing what makes you unique and being completely insufferable. if there was some substance to her, i would have no objections, but now everyone is trying to be ‘outrageous’ for no reason other than because they think that is what it takes to be noticed. that kind of thing should be backed up with music that is just as inventive, and not just warmed over euro pop.

    • Scorpio Man

Obviously you have not seen her play and sing… because she certainly can and better than most.

  • Don

I love Lady Gaga. She really gets the FUN of being outrageous.

  • Kristine

Gaga’s message of being true to oneself is spreading, and other artists are noticing that. Gaga = <3

  • Phil

Am I the only one here who seems to think Jenny Eliscu shot herself in the foot!? Quoting Gertrude Stein in trying to make Gaga out to be pointless & nonsensical, but then has to admit to NOT seeing Babs’ interview of her as one of the Most Entertaining People of 2009, and then has to be told about it by an ‘indie’ rock band she is interviewing, who then gets the SAME interviewer to break her Gaga-go-somewhere else mentality and plays her biggest song out right now!? KUDOS to Vampire Weekend for using that Ivy League Education to inform the ignorant. And yeah, they’re kinda awesome at the same time.

  • coach

man, celebrities/super rich people repping for all the freaks and weirdos is the biggest load of crap. i like lady gaga and all, i just think VW’s sentiments are lamerz. it’s like believing the breakfast club is a documentary film. p.s. i love you jenny eliscu.
