USA vs. Canada: Patrick Kane's Showdown Sunday playlist

Categories: Music, Olympics

During the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, EW.com wanted to find out what music is inspiring U.S. athletes. With the men’s hockey team facing off against Canada tonight (MSNBC, 7 p.m. ET pre-show, 7:40 p.m. puck drop), it seemed like a good time to check in with Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane, who tells us he listens to five songs before every game:

1. “Hot in Herre” by Nelly: “I like the way this song gives you energy. It’s a classic.”
2. “Tarzan Boy” by Baltimora: “It’s all in the beat.”

3. “Bed Rock” by Young Money: “I like the diversity of the song, so many different singers.”
4. “Sing for the Moment” by Eminem: “This song makes you take every moment and make the most of it.”
5. “Fluxland” by XL: “Great techno tune. It really pumps you up. It’s got good vibes.”

Go USA!

Olympic Song of the Day from speedskater Allison Baver

Categories: Miley Cyrus, Olympics

As the 2010 Winter Olympics kicks off in Vancouver, EW.com wanted to find out what pop culture is inspiring US athletes before they compete. So we asked a variety of Olympic competitors what song (or playlist of songs) they’ll be using to get pumped up. We’ll run these throughout the Games. Good luck, Team USA!

“The Climb” by Miley Cyrus

“The song and lyrics really speaks to me. Having overcome so much this year with my injury and fighting to make it back, it just really helps me harness my focus, emotions and pumps me up!”

Beach House debut 'The Arrangement' for Sirius XM: Hear it here!

Beach House’s Teen Dream is a huge leap forward for the Baltimore indie-pop duo and an early contender for album of the year. (Can you tell that I love this record?) Good news for fans: There’s even more amazing Beach House music in your near future! The band’s four-track Zebra EP arrives on Record Store Day, which falls on April 17 this year. Along with remixes of Teen Dream highlights “Zebra” and “10 Mile Stereo,” the EP also features two new songs. One of them is called “The Arrangement,” and that’s the one you can hear them performing below.

This performance of “The Arrangement” comes from Beach House’s upcoming stint as co-hosts on Sirius XM satellite radio’s SIRIUS XMU. In addition to hosting that channel all next week, Beach House has recorded a “SIRIUS XMU Session” which airs March 3 at 9 P.M. Eastern.

As you’ll see below, “The Arrangement” is perfectly lovely and thoroughly Beach House-y. What are you waiting for? Get your weekend started in style and click “play” already! Then let us know how you like this tune.

Rapper vs. Mitt Romney! LMFAO member Sky Blu says he was the person involved in plane altercation with presidential candididate

Sky Blu, one half of the electro-rap duo LMFAO, has posted a video message on the band’s website claiming to be the person who was removed from a plane at Vancouver airport last Monday following an altercation with Republican politician Mitt Romney.

It was widely reported that Romney had gotten into an argument with a man who was sitting in front of the politician’s wife after the ex-presidential candidate asked him to put his seat in the upright position prior to take-off. An aide for Romney was quoted as saying the man became “physically violent.”

Blu appears to confirm in the video that he did take matters into his own hands, although he also claims the incident was not all his fault. The video concludes with Blu saying that he has no hard feelings toward Romney, but that he won’t be voting for him “because I’m a Democrat.”

A spokesman for Air Canada declined today to confirm the identity of the man removed from the plane, saying it was a “police matter.” A spokesman for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police told EW that because the man was not criminally charged his name could not legally be released to the press.

Extended Play: Galactic's 'YA-KA-MAY'

Welcome to Extended Play, an occasional feature where we review CDs we couldn’t squeeze into the magazine—even though many of us really are quite excellent squeezers. This week: the newie from NOLA outfit Galactic.

Galactic
YA-KA-MAY
Funk (ANTI-)

Can we describe this collection from the New Orleans quintet without using the word “gumbo”? Probably not. The funkateers have infused YA-KA-MAY with an abundance of varied flavors as they skillfully back a wide range of NOLA musicians, from legendary artists such as singer Irma Thomas and producer-composer Allen Toussaint, to young rappers Katey Red and Sissy Nobby, who both feature on the energetic, clattering, “Katey vs. Nobby.” The result is an often very tasty musical, uh, stew. Vampire Weekend are 'Giving Up the Gun' with Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil Jon, and RZA: Watch their wacky video here

I’m just going to put this out there, and admittedly it is only my personal opinion: Playing tennis with Vampire Weekend looks about a zillion times more fun than going bowling with Justin Bieber. Take a gander at Vampire Weekend’s new “Giving Up the Gun” video below and you might see what I mean.

The clip centers on a tennis match in which a young woman faces off against, in turn, Joe Jonas; Jake Gyllenhaal, who swigs from a flask and rips off his pants; Lil Jon, who sports a Panama hat and speaks in subtitled French; and several other folks who are not famous. The match is judged by the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, who is dressed like a character from The Matrix and can apparently teleport. By the end of the revels, actual fireballs are being volleyed across the net.

This is about the craziest celebrity line-up I’ve seen in a music video since Jamie Foxx’s “Blame It” — which, as Pitchfork notes, also co-starred Jake Gyllenhaal. That guy picks his roles well. Watch “Giving Up the Gun” below and let us know what you think.

Justin Bieber goes bowling in 'Baby' video: Watch it here

Here are some things that might happen if you find yourself at a bowling alley with teen sensation Justin Bieber, according to his new video for the song “Baby.” Justin Bieber will tell you all about his first break-up. A guy will start break-dancing in the middle of one of the lanes. Ludacris will rap about his first love. Bieber will sing some more. There probably won’t be a ton of actual bowling going on, but if you are a Bieber fan chances are you won’t mind.

Watch Justin Bieber’s “Baby” video below, then decide: Would you like to go bowling with Bieber? Is this video a strike, a spare, or a gutter-ball? Do you think Justin Bieber has ever seen The Big Lebowski, or was that way before his time?

Raekwon on 'Wu-Massacre,' the future of the Wu-Tang Clan, his label dreams, and more: The Music Mix Q&A

Last fall’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Part II was a milestone for Raekwon. The long-promised sequel to the Wu-Tang Clan member’s 1995 classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx drew stronger reviews than he’d seen in many years and hit the Billboard 200′s top five the week of its release. Considering the six-year pause that preceded Cuban Linx II, you might expect Rae to be resting on his laurels right about now.

Hardly. He returns March 30 with Wu-Massacre (pictured), a full-length collaboration with his Wu brothers Method Man and Ghostface Killah; after that, it’s back to work on Rae’s next solo album, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang. To take a breather from recording might risk losing momentum, which he’s simply unwilling to do. “Right now, I’m tired as hell,” Raekwon admits, sitting at a conference table at EMI Records’ NYC office with a red-and-blue New York Giants hoodie pulled low over his forehead. “But it’s a job.”

On top of all that, Raekwon is also trying to establish himself as an music-biz mogul. Cuban Linx II was the first product of his Ice H2O label, released in partnership with EMI. Next up is Capone-N-Noreaga’s The War Report II, another sequel to a beloved ’90s New York rap album. Rae is interested in diversifying to other genres, too: “If I could come with another Avril Lavigne or Lady Gaga…” he thinks out loud. “We’re just ready to keep it moving. No more five years away Rae s—. I’m trying to make Ice H2O the next Def Jam. In my eyes, I’m the Berry Gordy.”

Read on for Raekwon’s thoughts on Cuban Linx Part II, Wu-Massacre, Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, and the possibility of another album from all eight members of the Wu-Tang Clan left after Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s 2004 passing — plus Rae’s reaction after seeing for the first time the crazy/awesome “RZA crosses the Potomac” painting that lit up the Internet last month.

Olympic Song of the Day from Luger Julia Clukey

Categories: Olympics, Wilco

During the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, EW.com wanted to find out what music is inspiring US athletes. So we asked a variety of Olympic competitors what song (or playlist of songs) they’ll be grooving to before they compete. We’ll run these throughout the Games. Good luck, Team USA!

Julia Clukey, Luge

“I don’t have a specific song that I listen to but the artists I listen to during training are first and foremost Wilco — they are my absolute favorite band/artist back to the Uncle Tupelo days. I also frequently listen to Avett Brothers, the Killers, and Willie Nelson. A lot of alternative/folk — never pop.”

Kara DioGuardi signs Ke$ha collaborator to Warner Bros.: So what do you think of Neon Hitch?

Categories: 3OH!3, Ke$ha, Neon Hitch

When she’s not busy judging American Idol, Kara DioGuardi is also a top A&R exec at Warner Bros. Records. She’s just used the latter capacity to sign British singer Neon Hitch to the label, according to a press release. So who’s Neon Hitch?

If you’ve turned on a pop radio station recently, you’re probably familiar with her work: Neon Hitch co-wrote Ke$ha’s current hit “Blah Blah Blah.” She’s also featured as a singer on “Follow Me,” 3OH!3′s contribution to Alice in Wonderland tie-in album Almost Alice.

Also: According to that same press release, Neon Hitch comes from a circus family, and has trained as a “trapeze artist, fire swinger, and stilt walker.” So at least she has some backup options in case her forthcoming debut album, Beg, Borrow, and Steal, flops.

Give “Follow Me” a listen below and weigh in: What do you think of Kara DioGuardi’s new signee? Will you check out her album?
