Those of you who last saw Dakota Fanning playing the cute kid in War of the Worlds are in for a bit of a shock with the video below. The clip features footage from the forthcoming rock band biopic The Runaways and finds the 16-year-old Ms. Fanning performing the titular band’s track “Cherry Bomb” while clad in an array of raunchy outfits. Yep, it’s the dictionary definition of “good, clean, fun.” But only if you bought your dictionary from a cocaine-and-book dealer on the Sunset Strip in 1976.
Check out the clip and tell us what you think. Do Fanning, who plays singer Cherie Currie, and Kristen Stewart, who essays Joan Jett, convince as the Runaways? Does the video make you or more less excited about the movie, which opens March 19?

I think they got the look down. Dakota actually sounds pretty good. Not a big Kristen Stewart fan as an actress so I am hoping she doesn’t ruin it.
When the hell did Dakota Fanning turn 16? I feel old.
well,i think the process began 16 yrs ago, give or take
I know doesn’t she realize, she has to be 6 forever.
It’s amazing how quickly Hollywood turns little girls into grown women… Like there weren’t any 25 year olds who could have played that part?? GROSS.
I know, I feel kind of skeezy watching it.
You do realize that The Runaways were 15-16 year old girls, right? You want them to cast a grown woman to play teenagers?
good point
What are you talking about. Grown people play teenagers all the time.
Ever see Friday Night Lights. One of the main characters that plays a high school football player is 29.
Yeah, but don’t you think it would be a little hypocritical to make a movie celebrating what Cherie Curie was doing when she was 15-16 but then saying it’s not okay for a 16 year old to do it now?
Hollywood does all the time.
That was in response to Kevin. I was watching a movie the other night, a guy was playing a high school football player. Actually, he was 30 years old. What about that chick from the old 90210.
I think you mean Gabrielle Carteris from the original 90210, whom was 30 when she started portraying Andrea Zuckerman.
i’m ridiculously excited to see this movie, and i’m not really sure why. but props to fanning for taking on the edgy rolse. it’ll do wonders i think to shake the squeaky clean.
For the love of God EW, I do not want 4 free preview issues.
Thank GOD I’m not the only one sick of getting that ad.
Honestly, if you did not tell me that was Dakota Fanning I would have never figured it out. She is unrecognizable. Looks interesting. Kristen Stewart is always broody so maybe she will fit right into the role.
For some reason, and I am NO prude, I find it terribly disturbing. It also looks like a marginal movie saved by rock and roll and a decent performance by the band. Stewart is miscast. Joan Jett (yeah I know this is her baby) was more than a sullen teenager. All Stewart does is sullen teenager. I loved the Runaways and Jett. I won’t be too negative til I see it (if I do) but I’ll be shocked if I like it.
And I would loike to echo. hey EW. I subsribe. I am sick to DEATH of this damn popup for 4 free issues.
It’s disturbing to see Dakota dressed like that, but it’s accurate. I get squicked out when I watch the old video of the real Runaways, so I suppose that factor should be in play here. It’s obvious, though, that this movie was produced by Jett and heavily involved Currie, though, because that video would make you believe there were no other members of the band if you didn’t know any different.
wow…This is Fanning? I had no idea she had it in her…
I thought Fanning was believable but I think some of the others are right, they should have gotten someone older to play Currie.
wow go dakota!
Okay. So I was really disgusted about what Dakota was wearing. I used to like that girl, but I don’t think much of her now. Gross.
