go Ricky go!!!
Ya know, I actually DIDN’T know. Or care, to be fair – but to assume otherwise would be to assume a base level of interest in Ricky Martin’s career. Which is to say, good for him for coming out! He was a really successful “heartthrob” who is willing to be honest despite being famous for being a sort-of pin-up personality. Good for him!
All the good looking ones are gay aren’t they….*sad*
Sad for you, maybe. Not sad for me!
Hey Big Dave, knew you would be thrilled, but have feeling you already knew?
Good for him. Not surprised but happy for him.
I love you, Ricky!!!
I’m glad that you put the cynicism aside because not a lot of people understand how difficult it is to come to terms with that and to say it for the world to judge you. So I’m glad that Ricky is in peace with himself now.
Ok so he’s living la vita hombre. Instead of Maria he digs Mario. So?
Thanks for acknowledging that it takes courage. Even with all the people saying “duh” and a music career that’s pretty non-existent, it takes guts. Not only is the US media and American public not sympathetic or encouraging, but this is a man who is beloved in very Catholic Latin America. Not easy. If you want more people to come out, don’t hate on those who do. Give them support.
Face it — being gay is COOL now. So the straight ones are the outsiders!
Also, remember how in high school — only the gay kids were in the theater program. Then how come Hollywood is mostly straight? Never made sense.
Are you for real? It’s cool to be gay now? Really? It’s so cool that I have a good friend who was gay bashed three weeks ago. And it’s so cool now that that girl was not allowed to bring her girlfriend to prom. And it’s so cool that now that it’s legal for gays and lesbians to get married. Yeah, straights are the ones on the outside now. It’s still hard being gay and living honestly about your life.
Boo-hoo. If you don’t want to be gay, then stop. Celibacy is grate.
Ed, your satire meter might be broken.
D’s Advocate, Maybe it didn’t register on Ed’s “satire meter” (or mine, for that matter) because when satire falls flat and is unfunny, it often comes across as insensitive. Saying that being gay is the new cool thing just comes off as silly and misinformed. And how utterly unoriginal and stale for someone to point out that theatre kids in high school are often gay and straight people are in Hollywood.
Rachel, I agree with everything you’re saying. I don’t think FaceIt’s comment is particularly insightful or funny. I also empathize with the hurt Ed, as well as the LGBTQIA community, feels on a daily basis. I believe that my other comments on this thread help support that. All I’m saying is that from my perspective, FaceIt’s comment is not to be taken seriously. I’m far more concerned about the blatantly ugly comments that are popping up here. That is where people like you, Ed, and myself should be putting our focus on.
Being gay is cool now? its not a choice you have…I still dont have equal rights in the US so I wouldnt call this cool….Congrats to Ricky it takes a lot of courage to do what you did, when you are gay we try to conform to society and need to be comfortable in our own skin before the world knows. you hear all of the prejudice your entire life and until the day comes when you can truely love yourself you stay hidden..it takes others longer to get to this place.Ricky be proud of who you are and live life to the fullest!
To be fair, sure we thought it was a “DUH” moment, but someone on Twitter pointed out that this is a HUGE deal in heavily Catholic, conservative Latin America.
in other news….the sky is blue.
Hayley, no one should be judged period. It’s the media that puts the pressure on celebrities. Besides he was big in ’98. 12 years have passed.
yay!!! now i have a shot!!!
Well duh!
Whoa…I never saw that coming!
Um, it took courage for him to come out? Is this author joking? How is it “courageous” for an obviously gay man who is a part of the most gay-friendly business on Earth to announce what everyone already knew in an effort to boost upcoming book sales? That isn’t called “courage”, that’s called “PR”.
…and how is he suddenly a role model?
What’s the most gay-friendly business on Earth? The music industry?! Yes, how many out gay musicians are there on the charts again? Especially in Latin music? It’s considered cool for artists to be “gay-friendly” but not gay. Try again.
