Renee Zellweger sings Bob Dylan! It's uncomfortable!

Bob-Dylan-reneeImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR Photos; Reuters/Rob Galbraith/LandovRemember like five years ago when Renee Zellweger was supposed to be working on a Janis Joplin biopic? (So were Zooey Deschanel. And Pink. And Brittany Murphy.)

In the interim, she seems to have given up the Me and Bobby McGee dream and moved on to another kind of musical-cinema venture, My Own Love Song (or as Videogum has dubbed it “Duets 2: The Squinty Eyed Female Crazy Heart.”)

The film, co-starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker and featuring 16 original songs by Bob Dylan(!), stars Zellweger as, per IMDB, a paraplegic singer on a road trip to Memphis with her best friend.

See the trailer, which showcases her singing the new Dylan song “Life Is Hard” (so true, Bobby Z) and watch her take on Woody Guthrie’s ‘This Land Is Your Land” like she really, really means it, after the jump:

That is a lot of face going on between Forest and Renee at the end there. A lot. Of face. Honestly, I am still not sure whether this thing is aiming for Coal Miner’s Daughter, Bastard Out of Carolina, or a Christopher Guest movie that has yet to make my Netflix queue.

It’s not that Zellweger can’t inhabit a compelling dramatic role (she has), or that she can’t sing (she can, in an actress-y sort of way), or even that her stick-and-poke tattoos don’t look real (they do). It’s just that watching the amount of effort and gravity and serious seriousness here is kind of making me long for the sweet comic relief of Bridget Jones III: The Fat Hits the Fan or whatever. Am I wrong?

I think she sounds great. The film looks great. You’re wrong.

You are RIGHT! At least about the “This Land” clip. A contrived, painful, simulacrum of “old timey” sangin’! Problem is, most people, do not have any critical sense, accepting whatever Hollywood wants to cram down the public’s throats. I’m sorry for Forrest W.; he’s turned into a Forrest G (Gump!) , with those soulful, baleful eyes of his. No Mas! I dread the sellout Dylan material, but admit, I am intrigued.

You are wrong! I’ll bet in context, the way she sings this is appropriated. This movie may be an Oscar nomination for her. I hope so.

What value is a judgement of a movie you haven’t seen yet? Just your predujucial feelings about the people involved.

Your so right dss, He’s wrong, This film looks promising. and the song had and should hold close meaning to people of the USA but unfortunately, we are shallow. She sang it well.

Looks overwrought to me. Oscar bait, anyone?

She sang it the way it should be sung. Movie looks great. Can’t wait to see it.

Out of context, yes. It’s awkward. Not sure I’d feel the same way seeing within the context of the film, though.
