Dr. Dre teases Jay-Z collab, 'Under Pressure,' at Fenway Park

Fenway Park was crawling with famous musicians last night, and I’m not just talking about Neil Diamond’s ridiculous rendition of “Sweet Caroline.” Earlier, before the Red Sox defeated the Yankees on baseball’s opening day (sigh), Dr. Dre and Interscope-Geffen-A&M boss Jimmy Iovine chatted with a New England Sports Network reporter. (Clip after the jump via Vulture.)

Ostensibly they were on hand to shill for some new Red Sox edition of Dre’s state-of-the-art headphones, blah, blah, blah. The reason everyone is going nuts over this interview clip today is that Dre and Jimmy used this opportunity to confirm the widespread rumors that there’s a Dr. Dre and Jay-Z single coming out soon. It’s called “Under Pressure,” and both guys said they’d use it as their at-bat music if they were on the Red Sox, so you know it’s good. Seriously, though: Dr. Dre and Jay-Z. When those two team up, magic happens. Also, presumably “Under Pressure” will be followed by more solid information on Detox, which is otherwise basically an urban myth at this point.

As a diehard Yankee fan, my excitement over this news is only slightly dimmed by the annoying sight of Dr. Dre wearing a custom Red Sox jersey. (Shouldn’t he be a Dodgers fan?) Must have gotten awkward in the studio if he kept that uniform on in the presence of the man who made the Yankee cap more famous than a Yankee can.

Watch Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s interview after the jump and let us know if you’re as psyched for “Under Pressure” as I am. Comments on Dre’s batting-practice swing are equally welcome. (EW’s Mike Bruno thinks it looks “kinda weak.” I’d have to agree. Only appropriate for someone repping the Sox, am I right?)

Wait…doesn’t anyone else recall another legendary collaboration called “Under Pressure”? C’mon people, wheres the love for Queen and Bowie?!

    • Charlie

What if Dre and Jay-Z used a sample from Queen and Bowie’s collaboration?

  • Moe

This mash-up is sort of like a musical erection.

  • Desmo

This is fantastic! Two of Hip Hop’s greats together at last.

dude – they already collaborated on The Watcher 2. That’s what I thought the youtube link was going to, but its going to Still Dre, which is Snoop and Dre. Who’s QA’ing these articles?

I think Jay-Z wrote Dr Dre’s verses which is why that particular vid was linked.

      • Simon Vozick-Levinson

Yes, Dennis, Jay-Z co-wrote Dre’s lyrics for “Still D.R.E.” He’s credited as a songwriter in the liner notes.

    • Fediddy

Jay-z has been ghost writing for dre for years

Weak swing reppin the Sox? How weak were those 9 runs…versus the 7 the Yankees posted?

  • David

    Yankees suck!! go sox!

  • Melanie

    Hey Simon,
With your logic, shouldn’t LeBron James be an Indians fan?

Yankees are old, and as usual, ugly.

    Hey Simon,
2009 is over and so are the Yankees! GO SOX GO!

I’m pretty much just sick of hearing about the Detox album. Dre has been teasing it for the better part of the last decade. Yeah I get it, he obviously is trying to make it perfect, seeing as how it will supposedly be his final album. And I know he took time off making the album to focus on producing music for other artists. I’m not mad at him for that. By all means, I want him to take his time with this album. But I’m still just annoyed of the teases over the past decade. I’d be happy if I didn’t hear another word about Detox until the day it is released. Who knows when that will be, though.

Dre and Jay-Z–hot pairing. Can you just imagine Jay-Z’s smooth and cool rap style over Dre’s funky music and beats? And Dre needs to get his Detox album out–it is going to be another huge seller if it comes out! He’s always innovative and chance taking with his hip-hop sounds!

One of the running jokes on WFAN is that the tuninrg point of the game is when the losing pitcher (e.g., one with a consistent, bad track record) steps on the mound and throws out the first pitch. The other tuninrg point joke is when such-and-such a player is inserted into the batting lineup. But “clutch double play” is even funnier than that. Well, maybe NOT that funny, since it cost us another game.Although it would be nice to see the Yankees make a credible run to the finish, I just don’t see it happening. What good is it if they’re good enough to MAKE the playoffs, but not good enough to WIN the playoffs? I don’t care to see a repeat of last year in that sense. They worked like crazy and then packed it up in the first round again.

DR DRE remains one of the best producers in the world.
