Lady Gaga, Green Day, and the Strokes to play Lollapalooza: Something for everyone?

green-day-gagaImage Credit: Neil Lupin/Redferns/Getty Images; Mark Metcalfe/Getty ImagesIt was announced this morning that Soundgarden, Green Day, and Lady Gaga are set to headline this year’s Lollapalooza Festival, which takes place August 6-8 at Chicago’s Grant Park. The event will also see sets by Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Phoenix, Spoon, Jimmy Cliff, Devo, MGMT, Hot Chip, Cypress Hill, Mavis Staples, the Black Keys, and a presumably clothed Erykah Badu (though, of course, you never know what that lady’s going to do—which I mean as a compliment.)

Lollapalooza has always prided itself on offering an eclectic mix of acts—its initial lineup, in 1991, featured Jane’s Addiction, Ice-T, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. But this year’s list of performers seems to be the most varied for a while, and is certainly a broader musical church headliner-wise than 2009’s more obviously rockier roll call.

What do you think of the lineup? Who are you looking forward to seeing? And is there a person out there who doesn’t care for any of the announced acts? Surely not.

Greenday are terrible but the other two can make a good time.

    • you suck

greenday is awesome, never been to a better concert then a greenday concert

      • Sam

You clearly need to go to better concerts then…

      • Mia

Green Day is the best!!!!!!! I love their concerts. Love Gaga too. Ready to get my tickets.

    • yeah, you suck

I have to agree 100% with “you suck.” The best concert I’ve ever been to was a Green Day show. Great energy, fun, and only two bum notes for the 3 hour show — take that American Idol!

      • nick

I saw Green Day back when they were a punk band, good show but far from the best.

    • Barry

Green Day is going to win the Tony Award this year for best Broadway musical: American Idiot. I think that title best describes Lady Caca & her fans!

    • JBD

I can’t believe EW commented about Green Day and Soundgarden like they were the best headliners with Gaga. The better headliners are The Strokes and definitely Arcade Fire. Check out the site, out of the six headliners, Green Day and Soundgarden are everyone’s least favorite.

      • kasia

If you think Soundarden is not worth being a headliner then your taste is off. And I’m sorry but who are you to say who is someone’s least favorite?

      • JBD

@kasia – I was referring to Lolla’s website where you can see how many people are going to see each band. I was simply saying that out of the six headliners, Soundgarden and Green Day have the least amount of followers. I never said Soundgarden wasn’t worthy to be a headliner; I just think Arcade Fire is better. Oh, and next time you try to criticize me, don’t apologize before you do it.

      • Ben

that still dosent necccesarily count everyone, ive been to many concerts and Green Day is by far the best, you can say that they suck, but according to millions of people and the grammys, they are quite good, but still, to each his own

      • JBD

@Ben – Did I say Green Day sucked? Maybe illiteracy is becoming a trend. Jeez. All I am trying to say is ARCADE FIRE IS AWESOME!!! More awesome than Green Day, Soundgarden, Lady Gaga, Phoenix, and yes, even The Strokes.

    • junierizzle

Yeah green day suck. That’s why they are still around after 16 years.
I’m being sarcastic if you didn’t notice.
They were playing Lollapalooza back when LAdy Gaga was Baby Gaga. I’m not hating on Gaga, I just used her as an example.

      • Nick T

Haha! Baby Gaga! Anyway, I’m definitely going on her day! I hope she’s with The Strokes and Arcade Fire.

  • Ramo

Nice lineup. Arcade Fire, The Strokes, MGMT, Spoon, Phoenix…all great bands. If I were to attend, I’d also catch Gaga, Mavin Staples, the Black Keys and Soundgarden.

    • JBD

You wouldn’t be able to see all six headliners. You have to choose three out of the six because they go on at the same time and it’s almost impossible to even see thirty minutes of each headliner. You have to see all or nothing.

  • Snsetblaze

Well I like Greenday and Soundgarden and some of the secondary acts but Lady Gaga is too commercial for this festival (though now Greenday probably is too).

    • Melissa

LOL, “too commercial”, right, cuz the rest of the bands aren’t

  • Sam

I’ve been going to Lollapalooza for 4 years and I’m thoroughly disappointed by this lineup. I’ve already seen most of the bands (Spoon, MGMT, Black Keys, Stars) at previous festivals. Besides the Arcade Fire, the bands I’d like to see are mostly smaller and I can pay a lot less to see them and not have to stand in the sweltering heat to do it.

  • Myra

Arcade Fire, Phoenix, The National, Yeasayer, MGMT… can’t wait! I’m lucky enough to live in Chicago, and Lolla’s always a great time!

  • Dan

Deer Tick is playing too and they rock the house, DEFINITELY check them out if you go, they’re blowing up.

  • Jean Genie

Erykah Badu may be a bad girl for walking around naked in public, but at least she’s got a slot. Once again, Franz Ferdinand isn’t there. Who did they creep out? Or maybe it’s because Alex Kapranos didn’t get someone pregnant. I’m sure Phoenix is adored by so many people because one of the members is Sofia Coppola’s babydady. Or maybe because AK stole Eleanor Friedberger from Spoon’s leader years ago – maybe that’s why people don’t want FF around.

    • crispy

Or maybe it’s because every Franz Ferdinand song sounds exactly the same.

      • Jean Genie

        Yeah, thank you, trollboy.

  • Rob Grizzly

Lady Gaga? yikes… I do not want to be in that crowd when she hits the stage

I personally am a little underwhelmed with the lineup this year. I’ve been going the last 4 years and have had a blast. This year just doesn’t seem worth the $200. I see Coachella and Bonaroo and they have really amazing lineups and then see Lolla’s and am just a little disappointed

  • Henry

    Erykah Badu and MGMT.

  • pdnoosh

The hipsters are going to have a field day bellyaching about Lady Gaga. Personally, I like the diversity of the lineup, and look forward to going.

    • kasia

Thank you for this commment. Something positive for once. And “hipsters” is a very appropriate term.

    • Chord

I am no hipster, in fact I hate those Pitchfork-following elitist snobs, and I dislike Lady Gaga. Not because she is pop, but because she is unimpressive and overrated. And that is all.

I love how you didn’t mention Soundgarden in the headlines even though they are the top billed act!!!
