MIA needs to just keep her opinions to herself…..i dont understand people. why cant we just step back and allow people to have some success sometimes. Lady gaga is doing well and the only reason behind that is because she knows what shes doing and she keeps gettin better all the time. let the girl blossom.

If we’re talking visual performance, clearly Lady Gaga’s got M.I.A. beat by a landslide in terms of ideas and innovation. But if we’re talking Lady Gaga’s actual music, however, and I believe this is what M.I.A. is really trying to say, then yes, Lady Gaga’s music isn’t really all that different or innovative (despite the focus on fame) than a lot of the dance-pop everyone’s heard over the last few years.

      So true.

  • Sally in Chicago

    I hate the Gaga.

  • bunker

I like a couple of Gaga’s songs and enjoy her outfits, but I agree with what MIA is saying.

Gaga is a shameless, walking theft of other people’s ideas and concepts.

Mash together Cyndi Lauper, 80′s Madonna, Goldfrapp, a slither of Bowie, a drizzle of Peaches, a spoonful of Shiny Toy Guns and a slew of Electro artists she came up with on Myspace, add a budget in the billions and a massive production team and you have the Frankenstien that is Gaga.

She is a great musician, but there’s little that’s original about her. I for one applaud MIA for calling a spade a spade.

MIA, on the other hand, is an original who gives credit where credit is due, has a big heart, worked very hard to get where she is, puts out stuff that enthralls kids and critics alike. And let’s face it: like any other boy the morning after, I’m not worried that when all the makeup and crazy get ups come off that MIA will no longer be MIA.

MIA will always be taken seriously because she is a highly intelligent, creative person.

THANK YOU MIA for telling it like it IS.

Plus, the video for Telephone was retarded.

i’ve lost a lot of respect for MIA…bashing for the sake of bashing. Lady Gaga is not the most creative musically, but lyrically she’s pretty interesting, as are her videos and general attitude. Being the first to do something is not the main intent of art…and she’s a great pop artist in comparison to previous dreck like Britney Spears

  • Tom

M.I.A is a parasite. She wants to jumpstart her sellout career by slamming a fellow artist…what a loser!

  • Laura

Interesting. I like Gaga and MIA’s music. But neither of them are “original.” MIA’s hit was a mimic of the Clash’s song for goodness sakes.

MIA’s lost points by bashing Gaga unnecessarily. I hope Gaga takes the high road and just ignores what is basically a pointless argument about originality and art. Let’s stop hating, ladies, and just make some great, inspiring music!

  • catlin

I want to know who is comparing Gaga and MIA in the first place…how are they alike?

    • Erica

Yeah, when I first read the headliners, I didn’t get the comparison either. But M.I.A. says people compared them because they both take a bunch of stuff that existed before, mix it up and try to put out something new out there.

      • kabinaChic

This is just a great example of a song where Gaga has jacked M.I.A’s style. Why would a financially successful artist want to jack from someone less known when her own so-called music and style are selling well?

  • PFCDavis10

Lady GaGa represents all that is wrong with music. She is just a corporate commercialized repetitive sell out. The video for Telephone was just a 9+ minute ad for all her sponsors, it wasn’t revolutionary it was just a firsthand example of selling out. Sorry but I’m going to have to agree with M.I.A.

    • beb

Sorry, the product placements were supposed to serve as commentary on the massive amounts of commercialism we are subjected to on a daily basis.

      • duffy

do you really believe that? not trying to be catty- i’m honestly curious

      • fancypants

well isn’t that convenient? LG can sell her sponsors products and then have a handy meta excuse.

      • Robbyrob

Sorry Beb, but I can’t take seriously or figure out any type of cutting edge commentary when one has a telephone made from her hair plopped on her head! Just call it for what it is…full-frontal product placement.

I found it a bit sad to hear MIA trashing Gaga. I saw both MIA and Gaga live in concert and I really must say that Gaga is a much more entertaining performer than MIA. Perhaps it’s just that I like Gaga’s music more than MIA’s but anyone that trashes Gaga should see her live before they pass judgement on her. She truly is one of the best performers out there right now.

  • guerta ava

M.I.A. is actually a TRUE artist with great music, and her OWN style. Gaga is nothing but a copycat with horrible pop music.

  • Annette

Ummm, I liked one… ONE of M.I.A.s songs – paper planes – and that was partially sampled from the clash and therefore, derivative. If I liked her music as much as gaga’s or her not even stylish wardrobe – I recall some crazy maternity getup at the grammy’s or somesuch – I’d give her guff some credence.

    • Annette

And don’t think I didn’t check out the song snippets on the rest of her paper planes albums because I did. Just didn’t care for the rest – and trust that with as catchy a song that was, I thought there would be more.

  • JT_Mark

Haha it’s absolutely AMAZING seeing the amount of people who will bash on the talents of an internationally recognized artist when they’ve produced nothing to prove that they’re opinion holds any weight! And I’m not talking about M.I.A.; I’m talking about the people on this forum. It takes hard work to get where Gaga is now, and I think anyone can concede to that. If you can’t, then do what she has done, and prove me wrong.

As for M.I.A. who happens to, ironically, be Missing In Action on any relevant pop charts right now, she should show a little more class. It’s one thing to be outspoken; it’s another to be plain rude. I liked her song, but after this demonstration of complete and utter disrespect for another artist that she hasn’t even met, I find a bitter taste in my mouth at the mention of Paper Planes or otherwise.

    • nope

It takes marketing genius to get to where she is. Hard work is Radiohead getting to where they are now with little commercial airplay and promotion throughout the years. And I’m not comparing Radiohead’s music to Gaga, I’m pointing out the difference between DIY and having a record label pump some hype into your machine. When Gaga was slumming it as an indie artist, no one gave a crap. Then she gets swooped up by a record label, and BAM! She’s huge in no time.

      • Yep

Totally agree 100%! It’s easy to do what she’s doing with a huge label in back of her.
