Justin Bieber: Five reasons watching him on 'SNL' may not be as painful as you think

justin_bieberImage Credit: Pamela LittkeyJustin Bieber is the musical guest on Saturday Night Live this week. This you know. This you cannot change. Here are five reasons it might turn out to be okay:

1. The kid can sing. If you’ve been avoiding listening to the music behind the 16-year-old former YouTube sensation/current Twitter trending topic, you should know that he does sing on key live. There should be no cringing. An acoustic performance to prove it…

2. He has a sense of humor. This is important because there’s no way SNL won’t be doing a sketch about him. (Maybe a celebrity charity single in which the others are pissed that he gets to sing the first line?) Below, one of the videos shot for his April Fools’ Day takeover of FunnyorDie.com.

3. You can drink every time he does a hair flip. Katie Couric recently got to the bottom of it.

4. Have you ever considered that you dislike Bieber fans more than the Bieber?

5. You’ve sat though Tim Urban singing “Sweet Love.” A role for Bieber in an American Idol sketch?

Are any of his fans even up that late?

    • TheObserver

      Hey! I’m up that late!

    • stella

Really. I know he looks and sounds about ten years old so I would assume his fans are too. Sorry EW but I couldn’t possibly sit through this. lol

      • Lee Harvey

Even if all of those things are true, it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t find this type of music interesting.

  • Brigid

Reason No. 6. You own a DVR and will not be watching SNL live.

    • Julius

      GUFFAW!! Kneeslap!

  • maiv

for me, I just have to wait until his voice deepens and matures b/c it’s too young for me. but his FOD video was pretty hilarious

    • Katie

Yeah. He sounds very junior high school talent show. How am I supposed to take that seriously?

      • Amanda

I mean, he practically *is* in junior high, right? It is what it is, and he’s a talented kid for his age. I’m not personally crazy about him, but… tweens like what they like!

      • pastafarian

Bieber or Die was funny, I just can’t get over that head of cabbage he calls a haircut.

    • LOL

Too lazy to spell “because?” Sad.

      • pastafarian

Too lazy to spell Laugh Out loud? Hypocrite. Here’s an abbreviation for you: stfu.

      • Eat Me

        Pasta sounds retarded.

    • Michelle

Umm his voice has been getting deeper u just probally been listening to his since his first song

  • arianna

    • Shelby

OMG!!! OMG!!! I’m sooo going to watch!! :D

    5. You’ve sat though Tim Urban singing “Sweet Love.” A role for Bieber in an American Idol sketch?

couldn’t have said it better myself!

  • David

oh god! I bet once he turns 18 people are not going to like his singing.. I’ve heard a lot better.. He’s not great at all..

  • Erin

I just can’t stand that picture of him with that weird hair and creepy stare. He looks like a young version of Justin from Queer as Folk.

  • Ivan

The thing about this Funny or Die stint is that we were all laughing AT him, not WITH him.

    • crispy

Tables have turned apparantly. Due to your pathetic comments on ew.com and failure at having a decent career it seem now everyone is laughing at you ;)

      • crispy

I lurrrrrv Justin Bieber. I want to have his babies. Ohmygaw.

    • Tim

laughing at him?, you don’t think he knows it’s a joke… Regardless, how often do people watch snl for the music acts? Hopefully not too often.

  • Caitlin

The thing I dislike are the 20 year olds at my college that are in love with him. It creeps me out. He’s a 16 year old that looks like he’s 12. I don’t see the physical appeal. I don’t really like his songs, but I do dislike his fans more than him.

    • elisha

I agree, he looks like he hasn’t hit puberty yet.

    • Elena

Even my 10-year old daughter hates Justin Bieber. She thinks he looks like a girl and sings like one, too. By the way, she also hates Zac Efron. Ha-ha, I guess she has good taste at an early age.

By the way, Team Timmeh all the way! :)

      • Bob

Okay I don’t like Justin Bieber that much, but it’s mean and stupid to not like Zac Efron. One thing I think you can agree on with me is that Zac Efron is wwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cuter than Justin Bieber.

  • ae

I will gleefully change the channel when he comes on. No convincing can make me sit through him. His voice still sucks and not a fan of prepubescent singing. I generally find him annoying.

    • ae

Oh and his promo with Tina Fey was creepy. A 16 yr old saying that a woman like 3 times his age is hot is not funny just disturbing.

      • Rush

Do your math; she’s not 3x his age.

      • Amelia

His current music videos are the ‘tame’ versions of what they will inevitably be in a year or two. They are not bad right now(ie. not too much womanizing, and every single female on screen is not sexualised). But his music videos (and lyrics) are all really heavy on the romance/love. I hope few 16 year olds fall as deepily & frequently in love with each other as Bieber seems to do in every one of his music videos (waaay too much heavy focus on girl-boy relationships and breakups for me – most 16-year-olds don’t have intense adult-like romantic relationships).

  • S.O.

Thank God for the DVR as I’ll be fast forwarding this portion of SNL when I record it.

  • Genesis

I don’t get the hate the guy, but I don’t get all of the craziness about him either.

As a person, I like him. Don’t like his music though.
I really like the fact that he went from posting videos on youtube…to became a teen sensation. That’s pretty cool.

  • Damien

Ha…okay, that funny or die thing actually got a laugh out of me.
I like celebrities who don’t take themselves seriously.

  • D

I don’t get why people say he can’t sing.
I remember watching him on youtube before he was famous, and even though his voice was high I thought he was a great singer.
Nice to see he finally got somewhere.
His voice got a bit deeper, but he still sounds good too.

  • Julian

    4. Have you ever considered that you dislike Bieber fans more than the Bieber?

    THIS. I don’t dislike him at all, he’s a cool guy…but his fans. They’re a bit…whacky.
Reminds me of the same reason why I can’t like the Jonas Brothers.
