Image Credit: Dan MacMedan/WireImage.comSoul great Roberta Flack is working on an all-Beatles covers album under the working title Let It Be Roberta. Sounds like a disc worth hearing! Yet the world was nearly deprived of that possibility when Flack left her in-progress recordings in the back of an NYC taxicab last month, per The New York Times. (Full disclosure: A friend of mine penned that Times item. I tried and failed to think of a “Killing Me Softly” headline pun for him this weekend. Maybe something about newspaper taxis would have worked better?)
The story ends happily: Flack’s cabbie was located and duly returned her missing suitcase full of Beatles covers, at which point Flack rewarded him with “a big, big, huge tip.” Whew.
Now that this incident has brought the existence of Let It Be Roberta to my attention, I really want her to finish recording so I can hear it. Anyone with me? Which Fab Four tunes do you think Flack could do the most with? I bet her smooth, heartfelt vocals would sound very nice on “Sexy Sadie” or “For No One” or “If I Fell,” to name three at random…

Pretty tacky to call the album “Let It Be Roberta”. She does not need to put her name in the title, especially if it is a tribute album. And, I might add, the world has not exactly been waiting for this project with bated breath. Get over yourself, Roberta Flack.
why not Roberta doing Beatles …. go RF ….
Dear Simon: Sexy Sadie does not call for ‘smooth, heartfelt vocals.’ Do you even know what/who the song is about?
Lars, why don’t you get over YOURSELF? Please don’t presume to speak for all of us. Roberta is a LEGEND and made some incredible music. An interpretive singer like Roberta has earned EVERY right to sing these songs.
Of course, you’d probably want some talentless hack like Lady Gaga or Ke$ha to sing these songs.
good 1 OMG … i’m a big fan of the roberta flack/donny hathaway duets
She needs to handcuff her briefcase to her next time.
Flack’s “First Take” is seriously one of the best albums ever to have been recorded…reminds me of dating my now husband…our “go to” album!
Here, There, and Everywhere
flack is the soul in love. a barry white kind of soul-loving.
those who doubt her power are into trash songs and loud noises.
soothes the beast within kind of music.
Okay, so she thought she lost something … but she didn’t … so where exactly is the news here????
It’s kind of like publishing a newspaper headline “Dog Does Not Bite Man. Whew, That Was Close!”
