Lady Antebellum's advice to 'American Idol' castoff Katie Stevens: 'Keep going!'

Lady-AntebellumImage Credit: Michael Tran/FilmMagic.comWe caught up with Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, and Dave Haywood of country trio Lady Antebellum backstage at ACM rehearsals today, but instead of talking about the band’s staggering 7 nominations, or current No. 1 single — “American Honey,” which they’ll be performing on the show Sunday — we took a second to chat about their experience taping an episode of American Idol this week.

All three were struck by how much smaller the set looks in person, of course, though Scott still loved the crowd’s larger-than-life enthusiasm. “When we were rehearsing and just the band was playing, we’d look out into the audience,” she said. “Without our voices, they were just singing along like they knew it.” Of the much-maligned swaybots in the pit, Haywood noted, “They’re funny. They’re all clapping to ‘Need You Now’ like it’s a party song.”

When asked if they’re watching the show, they admitted most times they’re on stage themselves when it airs. But Haywood caught an episode a couple weeks ago. “There’s a girl named Katie that I thought was really good,” he said. Informed that she’d just been voted off, he cracked up. “Did she really?” he said. (“Goes to show you Dave’s taste,” joked Kelley.) “I thought she was really good!” Haywood continued. “She had a thing. When I watched, I couldn’t stop watching her sing. I thought she had a great delivery, and I thought she was incredible. And I am sad to see her go.”

“Keep going, Katie!” chimed in Scott. “I tried out for American Idol twice, and didn’t get past the first round, if that gives anyone hope. Keep going!”

They are so SWEEEET! love them, and Hillary has a great voice, not as great as Charles Kelley’s (which is like insanely beautiful) but still great.

  • wastedtime

But did you ask them about Josh Grobin and Kris Allen at their show last night?

    • Brianna

To:wastedtime. What are you talking about? The interviewer did not ask about Katie. They asked the band if they watch American Idol. Then Haywood said that there was a episode that he watched and that he thought Katie was really good and then thats when they all started having a conversation about her. This page is not wasted time ok mr.obnoxious!!

That’s nice of Lady A to say that. They’re right, too. The un-secret secret about Idol is that a great voice doesn’t always mean you’re going to be a great recording artist. Some of the best and most popular artists today wouldn’t make it to Hollywood week on Idol. It’s a different kind of competition that focuses on things that an A&R rep won’t always be looking for (and shouldn’t, either).

Nice of Lady A to say that. They are a classy bunch.

Is Pastorek the EW writer who is so hateful about Idols? Can’t remember. Just surprised to read anything by her that wasn’t vicious and mean-spirited.

Yeah but still, Katie HATES country music.
Though I gotta agree if anyone could put a Jennifer Hudson out of this Idol pack, it gotta be Katie or Tim. Disney won’t hire both of them because they like “undiscovered” talents they could swindle (Zac Efron). She should try CW instead.

      oopsi “pull” ;)

Katie is going to go far in the music industry – yes, the next Hudson I will miss hearing her every week. She had that “inner star” quality. She should be signed by someone and someone soon – she will be worth millions!

I agree that Katie does have a very strong, beautiful voice. She’s young yet, but she will go very far with that voice.
