Broadway star Laura Bell Bundy kicks off her 'crazy' country career: A Music Mix Q&A

Laura-Bell-BundyImage Credit: Michael ElinsLaura Bell Bundy made her name starring on Guiding Light and in Broadway musicals like Legally Blonde, Wicked, and Hairspray, but the 29 year old Kentucky-born songwriter always had her eye on a country music career. So let’s take a moment to congratulate this smart, no-nonsense chick on having it all: Her split-personality debut, Achin’ and Shakin’, drops tomorrow (it’s one-half achin’ songs, one-half shakin’ songs), and she’ll perform its campy, catchy first single “Giddy On Up” on this Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards telecast. There will unquestionably be quite the production number.

Ms. Bundy hit Los Angeles this month for a couple warm-up gigs at local gay clubs — gotta show the fanbase some love — and we sat down for a chat about her unconventional album concept, attraction to “dirty, unshaven” men, and something called “Cooter County.”

Entertainment Weekly: You flirted with a lot of labels before settling on Mercury Nashville.
Laura Bell Bundy: Yeah. It’s like dating. I didn’t put out until I hooked up with Mercury. I was a total c—tease for a while.

Were you shopping your self-released album, Longing for a Place Already Gone, as a demo?
I guess so. That was kind of the proof that I was a singer-songwriter. My showcase was Legally Blonde.

I don’t know how many legit musical theater people sound like they could have mainstream recording careers.
That’s what people were nervous about at first at the label. We had guys, like, “This is a Broadway singer! What makes you think she can do a record?” But I already put out a country record that they could listen to and go, “It sounds like a country record.”

Then why did you need the Broadway show as a showcase?
It’s different when you hear someone sing out of a CD player, and then you see what they’re capable of doing live. They go see a Broadway show, and they go, “Okay, actually, she can sing.” And Legally Blonde was not, like, Oklahoma. It was musical theater pop. READ FULL STORY »

Roberta Flack almost loses her Beatles tribute album in a taxicab

roberta-flackImage Credit: Dan MacMedan/WireImage.comSoul great Roberta Flack is working on an all-Beatles covers album under the working title Let It Be Roberta. Sounds like a disc worth hearing! Yet the world was nearly deprived of that possibility when Flack left her in-progress recordings in the back of an NYC taxicab last month, per The New York Times. (Full disclosure: A friend of mine penned that Times item. I tried and failed to think of a “Killing Me Softly” headline pun for him this weekend. Maybe something about newspaper taxis would have worked better?)

The story ends happily: Flack’s cabbie was located and duly returned her missing suitcase full of Beatles covers, at which point Flack rewarded him with “a big, big, huge tip.” Whew.

Now that this incident has brought the existence of Let It Be Roberta to my attention, I really want her to finish recording so I can hear it. Anyone with me? Which Fab Four tunes do you think Flack could do the most with? I bet her smooth, heartfelt vocals would sound very nice on “Sexy Sadie” or “For No One” or “If I Fell,” to name three at random…

Roger Waters will take Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' on tour. What are the pros and cons of buying a ticket?

pink-floyd-wallImage Credit: Peter Still/Redferns/Getty ImagesPink Floyd bassist Roger Waters has announced that he will embark on a fall tour to mark the 30th anniversary of the band’s album The Wall, during which he will play the double set in its entirety. According to Rolling Stone, Waters’ official website will relaunch today at 2 p.m. ET, possibly with ticket info.

This is big news for Floyd fans. The Wall is a huge milestone in the band’s post-Syd Barrett canon, as well as being one of the best-selling albums of all time. The band itself played the album on their 1980-81 tour, and Waters organized an all-star performance in Germany in 1990 to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall. But since then, the work has been left to gather dust, touring-wise. Moreover, The Wall features a clutch of the Floyd’s best tracks, including “Comfortably Numb,” and Waters is, of course, a master of the epic rock spectacle.

So are there any reasons not to buy a ticket? Well, maybe. This is just a tour by Waters, not the Floyd as a whole. And though the Wall is in many ways a Waters solo album, there are several moments it would be hard to watch live without pondering the absence of, say, Dave Gilmour—not least the aforementioned “Comfortably Numb.” It is perhaps also worth pointing out that, even by the Floyd’s often less than cheery standards, Waters’ opus is one pretty depressing piece of work that, in its lengthy span, tackles madness, mother issues, and the fascistic nature of rock stardom. Justin Bieber, this most definitely ain’t.

What do you think? Will you be buying a ticket for Waters’ Wall tour? Did anyone out there see the band play it thirty years ago?

Drake's new 'Over' video: Watch it here

drake“Over,” the lead single from hip-hop’s leading young man Drake and his forthcoming Thank Me Later, is a prideful track about a guy who fought for notoriety, gained it, and now struggles with what comes with it: criticism, groupies, and the pressure of expected greatness.

“I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year,” he sings on the cut’s hook. “Who the f— are y’all?”

Today his Anthony Mandler-directed video for “Over” hit the internet. It’s artistically contradictory. He chose not to go the cliche rap-video route and fill his four-minute flick with nearly naked women, Ciroc bottles, and Beamers. Instead there is one leading lady, rap mogul Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation artist Rita Ora, acting as Drake’s distant love. For the majority of the video he sits alone in his bedroom as flashing images of busy streets and crowds of strangers float around him, pensive and rebellious. It’s controlled chaos. And it works.

His D-cup-filled (and Kanye West-directed) “Best I Ever Had” video from his So Far Gone mixtape last year got a lukewarm response for going a bit left of what his female fan base desired, but this one’s dead on in a not so obvious way. Good work, Drizzy.

Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later , hits stores June 15, but you can watch his new video after the jump right now.

Justin Bieber's performance on 'SNL': how did he do?

Justin-BieberImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/KCA2010/WireImage.comHaving already devoured QVC, the Billboard charts, and American Idol, Justin Bieber woke up Saturday morning and thought to himself, “Hmm, Saturday Night Live is ripe for the picking!” The 16-year-old singer was SNL‘s musical guest last night, but I’m not quite sure I get the objective. Was SNL hoping the Bieb’s presence would get tween girls to tune in, or was this a step toward gradually expanding his appeal to, I don’t know, people who like music? Ultimately, the majority of SNL‘s audience has probably never seen Bieber perform, so at least everyone got to find out what this “dreamy Christmas elf,” as host Tina Fey described him, was all about. And luckily, the Bieb didn’t have to worry about there being much comedy on the show to overshadow his two musical acts (sorry, Tina, but they gave you precious little to work with this time). David Cook on his sophomore CD: Massive choruses, mile-long catwalks, and...Dolly Parton?

David Cook is a busy, busy bee, but one who’s not going to be rushed. The American Idol season 7 champ has been working since January on writing and recording songs for his sophomore album, and while he’s well aware that an Idol results-night performance slot would be the perfect launching pad for a new single, he’s nevertheless more concerned with quality than cross-promotional synergy. We caught up by phone with Cook as he did interviews to promote his work on Idol Gives Back (set to air April 21 at 8 p.m. ET on Fox), and while we’ll cover details of his recent trip to Ethiopia in an upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly and in a subsequent blog post, we didn’t want to wait to share scoop on what he’s been up to in the studio, and who he’s been doing it with. Read on!

Is there a possibility you’ll be debuting a single on Idol before the season is over?
Well, we’re working on it, and it’s definitely something I’m cognizant of. I would love to be able to debut a single on Idol this year. But at the same time we certainly don’t want to rush anything. Rest assured, we’re trying very, very hard. I can give a definite maybe at this point.

Is it better than a 50-50 chance?
It really is a coin flip right now. I would say no, it’s not better than 50-50, but it’s not worse than that either.

Any new collaborators you’ve worked with since our last chat in February? READ FULL STORY »

Lady Antebellum is 'A Little More Preppy Than That': Hear their hilarious parody song here

Nashville newcomer Easton Corbin hit No. 1 on the country charts a couple weeks ago with “A Little More Country Than That,” by far the most annoying song off his otherwise-excellent debut album and the latest example of Music Row’s obsession with writing songs that are basically lists of romanticized backwoods imagery, designed to give artists the rural version of street cred. (Creek cred?)

What about those of us who love country music, but don’t fit the stereotype? Mixers, some of you now have a voice. Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum (whose current single, “American Honey,” should go No. 1 itself any day now) have written a parody version of Corbin’s hit, an ode to those “neglected” folk who value iPods and pink polo shirts, who dream of new cars and sweet shots down the fairway instead of rutting down some pot-holed dirt road in a truck full of mudfish towards a town where all the people and dogs are old. In honor of this weekend’s Masters — Kelley and Haywood are from Augusta, after all — I now give you “A Little More Preppy Than That.” Watch it after the jump. See ya on the first tee.

Elijah Wood travels through space and time in Apples in stereo's funny 'Dance Floor' video

Elijah Wood has my undying respect for several reasons. I mean, this guy not only totally saved Middle-earth that one time, he also signed the Apples in stereo to his Simian Records imprint, which ranks as a comparably important achievement in psychedelic indie-pop terms.

Now Wood has lent his star power to the Apples’ latest video, which premiered recently at Pitchfork. It’s for “Dance Floor,” the catchiest of many catchy tunes on April 20′s Travellers in Space and Time, the band’s surprisingly rewarding detour into futuristic disco. About a year ago, chief Apple Robert Schneider told me the in-progress album sounded “like there’s a party on a UFO, and everybody’s invited to come in.” The “Dance Floor” video doesn’t feature any UFO parties that I noticed, but there is a time-travel caper involving Wood as an alternate-universe gym teacher version of himself and Schneider as a mad scientist who lives to groove. As an Elephant 6 loyalist, I appreciate the in-jokes sprinkled throughout the clip. (I totally wore the green edition of Schneider’s E6 logo T-shirt yesterday!) It’s cool to see the Olivia Tremor Control‘s redoubtable Bill Doss working the keyboards as a newly official member of the Apples, too.

Check out the very fun “Dance Floor” video after the jump and let us know what you think.

Joseph Corre remembers his late father, Malcolm McLaren: 'I'm immensely proud to have known him'

mclaren-correImage Credit: Ian Gavan/Getty Images; Camera Press/RetnaThe end came quickly for Malcolm McLaren. The punk-rock mastermind (pictured above, right) was diagnosed with mesothelioma late last October. This past Monday, his family flew in to be by his side in Switzerland, where he was being treated: McLaren’s son, fashion mogul Joseph Corré (pictured, left); Corré’s half-brother, photographer Ben Westwood, whom McLaren helped raise; and McLaren’s longtime girlfriend Young Kim. By yesterday, McLaren was gone at age 64.

Joseph Corré was kind enough to grant an interview today while he waited in a Milan airport for a flight back to London. “It comes in fits and starts,” Corré said when I asked how he was holding up. “I’m all right at the moment. It was very good to go [to Switzerland] and to see him. I think he really appreciated it. I certainly did.” The family is still deciding on plans for a memorial service. “We’ve got to see what to do about that,” Corré said. “My brother Ben had an idea that we should get another boat down the Thames, like he did the Silver Jubilee with the Sex Pistols, and do something on that. But I don’t know if it’s going to go to that extent or whether we’ll do something more personal. There’s a lot of people who want to say goodbye. So we’re going to try to organize an opportunity for them to be able to do that.”

Read on after the jump for the Music Mix Q&A with Joseph Corré about his late father.
