Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker announces solo debut

corin-tuckerImage Credit: Rob Grabowski/RetnaIt’s proving to be an exciting spring for fans of Sleater-Kinney. Last month, guitarist Carrie Brownstein told an IFC interviewer that she hoped the much-missed punk trio would reunite in the studio “sometime in the next five years” — and added that she had recently “started a new band” that also included S-K drummer Janet Weiss. In a subsequent interview with Pitchfork, Brownstein clarified that she and Weiss had done some music for a documentary, not a “new band” per se. She also took that opportunity to hype the latest project from S-K singer Corin Tucker (pictured above in 2006, shortly before Sleater-Kinney’s extended hiatus): “Corin is working on a solo record, which I know is going to be awesome.”

Now it’s official. Venerable indie label Kill Rock Stars announced this morning that it will release Corin Tucker’s solo debut in October 2010. Details are scarce beyond that, but in a Q&A published by the Portland Mercury today, Tucker described the untitled album as “a middle-aged mom record, in a way.” As for that Sleater-Kinney reunion, Tucker said, “The door is open…You know, I’d love to live a long productive life and do a lot of different things,” which does not sound super-promising to me, but who knows.

How psyched are you to hear Corin Tucker’s solo music? What do you think it will sound like? And how likely do you think it is that we’ll have a new Sleater-Kinney album by 2015?

Quincy Jones lets Akon have 'Strawberry Letter 23'

Tagged: , ,

Quincy-AkonImage Credit: Sylvain Gaboury/PR Photos; Solarpix/PR PhotosSeveral acts have taken a crack at Shuggie Otis’ 1971 cut “Strawberry Letter 23.” There’s the classic Quincy Jones-produced funk version by The Brothers Johnson released in 1977. And then there’s the not-so-hot new jack interpretation young R&B crooner Tevin Campbell dropped back in 1992.

Fast forward to 2010. Quincy Jones is prepping Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, his first album in 10 years. He’ll be revisiting many of his cult favorites as well as his pop smashes. Artists like Usher and Mary J. Blige will lend their vocals for the effort. For the set’s first single, Quincy turned to Akon and his nasally but smooth voice to revive “Strawberry Letter 23.” And just like the fruit, this one’s sweet. Give it a listen after the jump.

M.I.A. trashes Lady Gaga: 'She's not progressive, but she's a good mimic'

mia-gagaImage Credit: Steve Double/Retna UK/LandovVia New York magazine’s Vulture site comes excerpts from an interview recently given to British music mag NME by everyone’s favorite Sri Lankan pop revolutionary, M.I.A., in which the “Paper Planes” singer more or less bitchslaps Lady Gaga back to her Catholic schoolgirl days. Here’s the juiciest part:

“Do you think those programmes [X-Factor] and the Internet have destroyed the mythology around popstars?
I don’t know. Again, there’s Lady Gaga — people say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same! None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be or thinks she is. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like 20-year-old Ibiza music, you know? She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I f—ing do! That’s a talent and she’s got a great team behind her, but she’s the industry last’s stab at making itself important — saying, ‘You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums’ Respect to her, she’s keeping a hundred thousand people in work, but my belief is: Do It Yourself.”

Ouch. Obvs, the “Gaga is derivative of literally everything that came before her” argument is not a new one. Positioning Gags as a pawn in the mainstream music industry’s final push for relevancy, on the other hand, is a pretty fresh form of nasty, given the way Our Lady of the Crazytown Lake goes out of her way to represent for all the counterculture art-freak misfits of the world. And to me, this quote smells more like an axe being ground against a neon-colored stone than an actual answer to the question at hand. Although the “20-year-old Ibiza music” bit is hilarious.

What do you think, Mixers? Who’s gonna walk out of this High-Concept Pop Thunderdome alive?

Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, and more parodied in another hilarious 'Key of Awesome' spoof: Watch it here

key-of-awesomeThe folks who produce the hilarious Key of Awesome series of videos for the Barely Digital network—they’re behind the amazing spoof of Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s “Telephone” video that came out last month—are busy, busy people. In fact, they’ve got yet another video debuting this afternoon, and EW has it here for you first!

Today’s clip is a slight departure for the geniuses behind Key of Awesome. Why? As you can see from the picture taken from the shoot above, this video doesn’t spoof just one specific artist and video or moment, as has been typical. Instead, an explosion of the Key of Awesome caricature characters were brought together to sing a theme song, “The Origin of Awesome!” for a series theme song: Lady Gaga! Justin Beiber! James Hetfield! Adam Lambert! Obama Girl! Ke$ha!

For a glimpse at the new video—as well as a little bit about the team behind the Key of Awesome—follow the jump.

Nicki Minaj drops out of Rihanna's Last Girl on Earth tour

Nicki-ManajImage Credit: Bryan Bedder/Getty ImagesJust two days after Rihanna announced that Ke$ha and Lil Wayne’s Young Money vixen Nicki Minaj would be hitting the road with her this July, Minaj has pulled out. Nicki dropped the news that she’ll miss the Last Girl on Earth tour through her Twitter account.

“I’m sorry 2 say I will not be going out on RiRi’s tour,” she tweeted about an hour ago. “I’ve decided 2 use that time 4 the completion of my album. Hope u understand.”

Granted, tours can be time consuming, but couldn’t she have found  a way to record on the road? That exposure would’ve been a great way to promote her upcoming debut album. And why didn’t she think about this before Monday’s announcement?

Sad to see Minaj go?

The Script: Watch the Irish rockers performing 'Breakeven,' from their forthcoming 'Unplugged' show

Irish rockers The Script are appearing on VH1′s Unplugged show on May 7. Can’t wait that long? Fret not, for you can see the trio performing a voltage-free version of their hit “Breakeven (Falling to Pieces),” after the jump.

As the original version is not exactly a supercharged slice of death metal, this new reworking doesn’t come as that much of a, well, shock. But take a look and tell us what you think. Also, do you agree with me that, when it comes time to make that Chris Isaak biopic, singer Danny O’Donoghue should be at least on the shortlist to play the Quiffed One for physical, if not necessarily vocal, reasons?

Usher tops the albums chart; Erykah Badu makes the top five

usher-erykah-baduThe newest Billboard 200 albums chart holds good news and less-good news for Usher. Good: His Raymond v. Raymond is the No. 1 album in the country! This is his third chart-topper in a row. Go ahead and break out the champagne, Mr. Raymond. Less good: Raymond v. Raymond got there by selling 329,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s a solid opening number, so I wouldn’t call this bad news. But it’s a step down from the 443,000 his last one, Here I Stand, bowed with in 2008, much less the 1.1 million copies his album before that one managed in the ancient year of 2004. Part of that is obviously due to the changing retail market for album-length music. It also suggests, however, that the dip in sales from Confessions to Here I Stand wasn’t a fluke. Usher now seems to be a totally respectable 300,000 to 400,000 range artist, just not the unstoppable megastar he was in ’04.

Usher knocks his protégé Justin Bieber down to No. 2, with another 291,000 copies sold of his My World 2.0 in week two. That’s actually 8,000 more than Bieber’s album sold in its first week. Credit where credit is due: My World 2.0 still has yet to become a runaway smash, but his ability to dodge second-week deflation is impressive. (According to Billboard, this “marks the first time a No. 1-debuting album — issued on a traditional Tuesday release schedule — has posted an increase in its second week since 2002.”) If Bieber can keep this up in the weeks to come, he’ll have something more valuable than a huge debut — a steady long-term seller.

Erykah Badu can now put an exact number on how many album sales a naked video (and a $500 fine) will buy: 110,000, which is how many copies her New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh sold in its first week on shelves, winning her the No. 4 spot. That’s a minor comedown from the 124,000 that New Amerykah Part One sold in 2008, so it’s unclear whether Badu’s “Window Seat” video helped boost her sales at all. All controversy and legal drama aside, however, Return of the Ankh is an excellent album, so Badu deserves every one of the sales she got.

Investigation reveals cause of Travis Barker/DJ AM plane crash

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

DJ-AM-travis-barkerImage Credit: PRN/PR Photos; Tina Gill/PR PhotosFederal investigators have concluded that the deadly Sept. 2008 plane crash that injured DJ AM and blink-182′s Travis Barker was due to under-inflated tires, the Associated Press reports (h/t Rolling Stone). According to investigators’ testimony at a National Transportation Safety Board meeting, the plane’s tires exploded as it raced down a South Carolina runway, leading to brake damage and an abortive take-off. The crash killed the plane’s pilot and three others; Barker and DJ AM (born Adam Goldstein), the only survivors, suffered major burns. DJ AM died last year after an accidental drug overdose.
