Thom Yorke jams out, road tests new tunes with Atoms for Peace in NYC

atoms-for-peaceImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comThe biggest cheers for Flying Lotus at NYC’s Roseland Ballroom last night came at the very end of the electronic wizard’s opening set, when he dropped a pitch-shifted snippet of Radiohead’s “Idioteque.” Never mind the fact that, for 35 minutes or so prior, he had already been hurling down titanic beats to what seemed an unjustifiably lukewarm crowd reaction. The point was made: This was a house full of Radiohead fans, and they were more excited by a remix of a 10-year-old Radiohead classic than anything else Flying Lotus could offer.

This wasn’t, however, a Radiohead show. It was the East Coast debut of Thom Yorke’s other band, Atoms for Peace (né ????) — the one with Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The fledgling supergroup had previously played only a tiny handful of gigs, all in L.A., since Yorke announced its formation in a September ’09 blog post. Even in an age when fans could watch those performances on YouTube last fall practically before the roadies finished clearing the stage, there was still a pleasant sense of mystery surrounding the first of Atoms for Peace’s two nights at Roseland.

New B.o.B., 'Don't Let Me Fall': Hear the Atlanta rapper's latest single

Bobby Ray Simmons, a.k.a. 21-year-old B.o.B., the “Nothin’ On You” nice boy with nothin’ between him and the Hot 100‘s top spot but Rihanna’s “Rude Boy,” sounds like he’s having a Coldplay moment on the pensive, piano-tinkled new single “Don’t Let Me Fall,” after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Big Boi drops 'Shutterbugg,' solo debut finally on the way

Big-BoiA post recently appeared in this space under the headline “Big Boi plays SXSW. Now, where’s that album?” Just kidding — I published that piece over a year ago, after the OutKast star promised last year’s SXSW attendees that his solo debut, Sir Luscious Left Foot, would be in their hands by “June or July.” Needless to say, June and July 2009 came and went with no Big Boi album.

Things have been looking up for Big Boi lately, though. He officially decamped from his and OutKast’s longtime label home at LaFace/Jive and signed with Def Jam. And last night, he premiered a new single from the still-upcoming Sir Luscious Left Foot called “Shutterbugg.” It’s fantastic. Andre 3000 reportedly picked this as his partner’s next solo single, and it shows: Like so much of their best work together over the years, “Shutterbugg” knows no fixed genre. The beat has a left-field party vibe that would have fit comfortably on OutKast’s classic Stankonia, all liquid synth lines and elastic guitars. Singers sing, with and without vocoders, over and around Big Boi’s rhymes. Oh, those rhymes. His flow and wit haven’t aged a day since Speakerboxxx. Are there still people who doubt that Big Boi is on the same level of lyrical talent as the great Andre? There shouldn’t be.

Then again, this is hardly the first awesome taste Big Boi has given us of Sir Luscious Left Foot. If “Shine Blockas” and “Royal Flush” didn’t get him out of release-date purgatory, will “Shutterbugg” be any different? Let’s hope so. I haven’t seen a solid new date for the project yet, but I’ve reached out to his new label to see if one exists. In the meantime, give “Shutterbugg” a listen after the jump (NSFW language) and let us know how much you’re looking forward to Big Boi’s album.

Lady Gaga, Green Day, and the Strokes to play Lollapalooza: Something for everyone?

green-day-gagaImage Credit: Neil Lupin/Redferns/Getty Images; Mark Metcalfe/Getty ImagesIt was announced this morning that Soundgarden, Green Day, and Lady Gaga are set to headline this year’s Lollapalooza Festival, which takes place August 6-8 at Chicago’s Grant Park. The event will also see sets by Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Phoenix, Spoon, Jimmy Cliff, Devo, MGMT, Hot Chip, Cypress Hill, Mavis Staples, the Black Keys, and a presumably clothed Erykah Badu (though, of course, you never know what that lady’s going to do—which I mean as a compliment.)

Lollapalooza has always prided itself on offering an eclectic mix of acts—its initial lineup, in 1991, featured Jane’s Addiction, Ice-T, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. But this year’s list of performers seems to be the most varied for a while, and is certainly a broader musical church headliner-wise than 2009′s more obviously rockier roll call.

What do you think of the lineup? Who are you looking forward to seeing? And is there a person out there who doesn’t care for any of the announced acts? Surely not.

Dr. Dre teases Jay-Z collab, 'Under Pressure,' at Fenway Park

Fenway Park was crawling with famous musicians last night, and I’m not just talking about Neil Diamond’s ridiculous rendition of “Sweet Caroline.” Earlier, before the Red Sox defeated the Yankees on baseball’s opening day (sigh), Dr. Dre and Interscope-Geffen-A&M boss Jimmy Iovine chatted with a New England Sports Network reporter. (Clip after the jump via Vulture.)

Ostensibly they were on hand to shill for some new Red Sox edition of Dre’s state-of-the-art headphones, blah, blah, blah. The reason everyone is going nuts over this interview clip today is that Dre and Jimmy used this opportunity to confirm the widespread rumors that there’s a Dr. Dre and Jay-Z single coming out soon. It’s called “Under Pressure,” and both guys said they’d use it as their at-bat music if they were on the Red Sox, so you know it’s good. Seriously, though: Dr. Dre and Jay-Z. When those two team up, magic happens. Also, presumably “Under Pressure” will be followed by more solid information on Detox, which is otherwise basically an urban myth at this point.

As a diehard Yankee fan, my excitement over this news is only slightly dimmed by the annoying sight of Dr. Dre wearing a custom Red Sox jersey. (Shouldn’t he be a Dodgers fan?) Must have gotten awkward in the studio if he kept that uniform on in the presence of the man who made the Yankee cap more famous than a Yankee can.

Watch Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s interview after the jump and let us know if you’re as psyched for “Under Pressure” as I am. Comments on Dre’s batting-practice swing are equally welcome. (EW’s Mike Bruno thinks it looks “kinda weak.” I’d have to agree. Only appropriate for someone repping the Sox, am I right?)

Benji Madden shows Riki Ratchman his fists of fury

Benji-MaddenImage Credit: James Atoa/Everett CollectionIn the time it takes to count to 100, former MTV host Riki Rachtman got three helpings of boxing-ring floor on Saturday night. Who served him? Good Charlotte guitarist Benji Madden. The two laced up their gloves for mixed martial artist Jason Ellis‘ Ellismania 5 celebrity fight at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

As People reports, Madden knocked Rachtman down three times before the referee stopped the fight. Madden, who was escorted to the ring by his brother Joel, won by technical knockout. Ratchman came into Saturday night a confident man, thinking there’s no way he’d lose in a fight with a guy in Good Charlotte. Wrong! After Madden beat some sense into him, he humbly admitted defeat. “Benji Madden just kicked my ass,” Rachtman said. “I got wasted by the guy in Good Charlotte. “

Madden responded, “That was the best backhanded congratulations I’ve ever gotten, but thanks anyways.”

Aloe Blacc's 'I Need a Dollar' (the awesome 'How to Make It in America' theme song) gets a music video

How great is “I Need a Dollar,” Aloe Blacc’s theme song for How to Make It in America? I gave up on the HBO denim-trafficking dramedy a while back, but the excellent Aloe Blacc retro-soul tune that runs over the opening credits has stayed in steady rotation chez moi.

Now “I Need a Dollar” has a music video (h/t Nah Right for the clip). It’s nothing too fancy, but then again, you don’t need much to make this song pop. Aloe Blacc sings on one portion of the screen, while on the other we see an anonymous hustler doing some of the things that people who need dollars do. The clip concludes with an unresolved chase sequence involving said hustler. Before that, though, around the 2:35 mark, Aloe switches into another song — this one’s a simmering psychedelic number that reminds me of the Temptations’ classic “Ball of Confusion.” (A very good thing!)

Speaking of Good Things, Aloe Blacc’s album of that name is expected this summer. If the rest of Good Things is at the same level of quality as “I Need a Dollar” and that bonus joint from the video, the album title might prove to be an understatement. Watch Aloe Blacc’s “I Need a Dollar” video after the jump and let us know if you’re looking forward to Good Things, too.

Erykah Badu charged with disorderly conduct for controversial nude video

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Erykah-Badu-videoThe Dallas Police Department has charged Erykah Badu with disorderly conduct for removing her clothes in public during her “Window Seat” music video shoot, making good on the investigation that was still in progress as of this morning. The singer is now subject to a fine of up to $500.

A press release issued this afternoon reads as follows:

“The City Attorney’s Office and the Dallas Police Department have decided to charge the entertainer known as Erika [sic] Badu with Disorderly Conduct. After much discussion, it has been determined that this charge best fits her conduct when she disrobed in a public place without disregard to other individuals and children who were in close proximity. Disorderly Conduct is a class C misdemeanor which means Ms. Badu will be subject to a fine up to $500.00. The At-Large-Citation will be mailed to Ms. Badu in the near future. It will be up to her as to how she wants to proceed further with this case. She can contest it in a court of law or simply pay the fine.

“The delay in issuing the citation was due to the lack of witnesses, who were at the scene, who were willing to come forward and file a formal complaint with the police department. One witness did come forward yesterday, thus leading to the charges filed today.”

We’ve reached out to Badu’s camp for comment on this case and will update you if we receive any answer.
