Thursday ACM Rehearsal Not-Quite-Live Blog: Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Jack Ingram, and Laura Bell Bundy

laura-bell-bundyImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesHi howdy, Mixers, and welcome back to the teal-green embrace of the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada — try the veal! — for the 2010 Academy of Country Music Awards. As usual, EW is on the scene bringing you the rundown from rehearsals, which today featured a lot of men doing man things until the arrival of one very ambitious blonde and her tireless dance crew. Read on for more info on performances from Jason Aldean, Trace Adkins, Dierks Bentley, Jack Ingram, and please enjoy my bonus interviews with Blake Shelton and Laura Bell Bundy. Hint: One of those two artists has a man-crush on Trace. And I’d say, “It’s not the one you’d think,” but actually, it’s totally the one you’d think.

12:10 p.m. Trace Adkins is on stage drinking a bottle of water. He is wearing a crunched-up black cowboy hat, loose (for him) jeans, and an untucked black oxford shirt. His hair is down. Trace Adkins is an extremely imposing man.

12:14 p.m. Blake Shelton has joined Trace to rehearse their number, Blake’s recently-released “Hillbilly Bone.” I believe this song is a euphemism, though I do not know for what.

12:20 p.m. Above the stage, a diamond-shaped frame is hanging from the grid. In the center of the frame is a diamond-shaped video screen. Right now, as we wait for Trace and Blake to reset, the video screen is showing a sort of red pulsating lava pattern. I do not want to say it looks vaginal, because I am from Texas and we don’t say such things. But one might say that, if one were so inclined.

'Glee' cast covers Madonna's 'Like a Prayer': Hear it here!

Next week’s all-Madonna episode of Glee is the most music-packed episode so far—and, in my opinion, their best hour yet. So it makes sense Fox is slowly leaking select tracks from the episode, like Sue Sylvester’s brilliant scene-for-scene remake of “Vogue.” Now, we have the cast’s phenomenal cover of “Like a Prayer.” “Like a Prayer” is definitely one of the highlights of the episode and probably the show’s best shot at another “Don’t Stop Believin’”-type download phenomenon. Plus, it does a nice job of incorporating most of the cast’s vocals. Full track below…

What do you think, Music Mix-ers? Does it live up to Madonna’s version? Is it better?

Hanson and Weird Al invoke spirit of 'The Blues Brothers' for new video. How does this not suck?

Categories: Movies, Soul, Video Gaga

If you’d told me yesterday that I would like the video for Hanson’s new single, “Thinkin’ Bout Something,” then I would have said, “I’m fairly sure that’s not true, because I don’t particularly care for them.” And if you’d tried to persuade me otherwise by saying that the clip pays homage to the Ray Charles sequence from the Blues Brothers then I would have suggested that that actually makes it less likely I’m going to enjoy it. And if you’d added that the video also features Weird Al Yankovic playing tambourine in a sexually suggestive fashion then I would have testily remarked upon how this whole conversation was a complete, and rather inexplicable, waste of my valuable time.

But I would have been wrong! The video is a delight, partly because the song itself is a delicious, catchy slice of pop-soul, and partly because some considerable effort has clearly gone into recreating the Blues Brothers scene. For a second, I really thought that was the great Steve Cropper on guitar. Weird Al’s gyrations I could do without, but there you go.

Anyway, check out the video—which is from their June 8-released CD Shout it Out—and then take a look at the  relevant movie clip, which you’ll find after the break. Compare, contrast, and tell us what you think!

Rihanna is No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for fifth straight week

Rihanna-jack-johnsonImage Credit: Johnson: Hilary WalshThe top three slots on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart haven’t changed a bit since last week. Rihanna‘s reign won’t let up, with her “Rude Boy” at No. 1 for the fifth straight week. Again, to Bruno Mars’ dismay,  B.o.B’s “Nothin’ On You” sits at No. 2. And Train’s  “Hey, Soul Sister” remains at No. 3.

Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” and Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” featuring Beyoncé both dropped down two spots this week, now at No. 6 and 7, respectively. Moving on up is Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart,” which jumped up two spots to No. 4. Usher, whose “OMG” debuted at No. 14 last week, climbed into the last spot on the top 10. It’s the 15th top 10 cut of his career.

New entries to the top 20 include Jay-Z’s “Young Forever,” at No. 17, Ke$ha‘s “Your Love is My Drug” at No. 19, and Jack Johnson‘s “You and Your Heart,” which debuts at No. 20.

Pop princess Rihanna continues to dance at the top, but there’s plenty of new blood this week. Who do you think will challenge her?

Type O Negative singer Peter Steele dies

Type-O-Negative-Peter-SteeleImage Credit: George De Sota/Redferns/Getty ImagesPeter Steele, singer and bassist with New York goth metal act Type O Negative, has died, reports CBS News. According to an email from the band’s manager, Mickey Renault, “Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.”

Type O Negative put out their first album, Slow, Deep and Hard, in 1991. Subsequent releases included 1994′s Bloody Kisses—which cracked the Billboard Top 100—and the 2000 compilation, The Least Worst of Type O Negative. Steele gained notoriety in 1995 when he posed for Playgirl.

Josh Schwartz shares his favorite Coachella memories

josh-schwartzImage Credit: Albert L. Ortega/PR Photos Josh Schwartz (the guy behind Chuck, Gossip Girl, and The OC) is a huge fan of the Coachella music festival, which this year runs from April 16-18 and features headliners Jay-Z, Muse, and Gorillaz. Below, he shares some of his highlights.

I was never allowed to celebrate Christmas. This void in my childhood left me on a decades-long search for a holiday I could call my own. On a balmy weekend in October, 1999, as a college senior, I found what I had been looking for. And unlike Christmas, this one had good music (all apologies to Mannheim Steamroller). It was called Coachella.

In the years since, Coachella has become an exodus from reality, a celebration of music, an endurance test, a snapshot of the zeitgeist, and, as I anticipate my 11th trip to Indio, a college reunion of sorts. It is, at times, unbearably hot, incredibly crowded, and nearly impossible to navigate. At others, it is magical: a near spiritual adventure that brings together people of all ages, backgrounds, and body odors to hear the best bands in the world. Here is a look back on some Coachellas past.

YEAR ONE: The journey to the first Coachella was like landing on an exotic undiscovered island. Wide-open polo fields lit by glow sticks and a full moon, where one could run freely from one pre-millennial act to the next. To me and my friends, it was love at first sight. Not so much for the girl I had brought with me, hoping to use this weekend to act upon a summer-long crush. When I awoke Monday morning, she was gone, leaving me to make the long drive back to Los Angeles alone. Not even this temporary heartbreak could get in the way of my new long-term relationship.

ONE-TWO PUNCH: I doubt that the rest of my concert-going life will ever see a back-to-back performance like the 2004 pairing of the Pixies into Radiohead. It was epic and unforgettable, and remains the high-water mark of all Coachellas.

A STAR IS BORN: There are moments where the perfect band takes the stage at the perfect time and a harmony of music and destiny sweep over the crowd. In 2005, as the sun was setting, through a golden hued haze, Arcade Fire swept the second stage. Their performance was an incendiary proclamation to all witnesses — a major new band had arrived. No one could match their numbers, or their passion.

BEHIND THE SCENES: We wrapped the first season of The OC in April, 2004. To celebrate, I convinced some of the cast members to attend their first Coachella. They loved it, until after the concert, when we discovered we’d been abandoned by our taxi home. The gridlock exiting the parking lot meant it would be hours before a new ride could rescue us. We didn’t despair. Instead, an impromptu game of stickball was organized, one that made the time fly by. One of my favorite memories from the OC experience.

THE ONE: Bringing the woman who would one day be my wife to her first Coachella in 2006 was a high-pressure situation. What if she hated it? Could the relationship handle it? But as I watched her fight the crowds with me to get close to Bloc Party in the Gobi tent and witnessed her reverie during a transcendent Sigur Ros main-stage performance, I knew Coachella was telling me I had the right partner — for future Coachella weekends, and for the rest of my life.

Academy of Country Music Awards weekend kicks off in Vegas: EW is on the scene with your first exclusive announcement!

GlorianaImage Credit: David Atlas/Retna/Retna LtdGreetings from Las Vegas, Mixers, where I’m in town gearing up for this weekend’s Academy of Country Music Awards. The show will beam into your living rooms via CBS at 8pm this Sunday night, and we’ll be live-blogging it; I’ll also be bringing you my usual semi-live blog coverage of rehearsals for the next three days, as well as keeping you up to date on all the breaking news and exciting happenings here in the vast Neonopolis of Nevada. Yes, that’s right: exciting.

First bit of exclusive news! Gloriana, Joey + Rory, and Luke Bryan — Top New Artist contenders all — have been added to the lineup of performers for the big show. They join already announced headliners like Brooks & Done Dunn (last time I’ll make that joke, I swear), Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, and your hostess with the mostess, Ms. Reba McEntire. Stay tuned here for scoop on all those performances, as well as (hopefully) interviews with the stars themselves. The stars absolutely love it when I shove my tape recorder in their face right after they finish rehearsing. Yes, that’s right: love. it.

Now I want to hear from you, country fans: Who are you excited to see? Who do you most want me to interview, and what should I ask? Who’s your vote for Entertainer of the Year? And if I wrote incendiary things here about Carrie and/or Taylor, which fanbase would leave more comments defending their favorite blonde?

Eminem announces 'Recovery' is coming June 22

Categories: Eminem

eminemRight around the time that Eminem returned from his extended hiatus with last May’s Relapse, he started dropping hints about an album called Relapse 2, which was allegedly set for release by the end of 2009. Anticipation for the sequel has continued to build since then despite repeated delays. As recently as a couple of weeks ago, producer Just Blaze, who’s working on the project, told MTV News Relapse 2 was “definitely going to be up there with the best of [Em's] albums, for sure.” Late last night, though, Eminem seemed to deflate the hype with a succinct tweet: “There is no Relapse 2.” Say what?

Turns out he was just talking about the name. Eminem’s label confirms that his next album will arrive in stores June 22 under the new title Recovery. “As I kept recording and working with new producers, the idea of a sequel to Relapse started to make less and less sense to me, and I wanted to make a completely new album,” Shady told Rap Radar today. “The music on Recovery came out very different from Relapse, and I think it deserves its own title.” A press release mentions producers including DJ Khalil, Jim Jonsin, and Boi-1da as well as Just Blaze.

Sounds intriguing. Are you looking forward to Relapse 2 Recovery? What kind of sounds and themes do you hope Em has in store for us?

Tila Tequila talks to Music Mix about her new single: 'I don't think music is about singing'

Tila-TequilaImage Credit: Keadrick D. Washington/PR PhotosTila Tequila‘s hair is colored platinum blond. It’s a risky, jagged new cut. She dyed it right before jumping on the plane to New York, leaving behind sunny Los Angeles and her long brown locks. And just as she’s dropped her old look, Tila’s trying to drop the image you have of her. You know, the one of her making out with dozens of competing guys and girls on her MTV show, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila.

Before she got down on camera in hot tubs surrounded by booze, she was an artist. She rapped and sang. And that’s what she wants to get back to. Funny thing is that she’s basically still the same: sweet but so not innocent. She’s out promoting a song called “I F—– the DJ,” for goodness sake. On the 15th floor of a Manhattan skyscraper, Tila sat down to talk about how Fergie stole her style, what songs a DJ should play to get her into bed, and why Madonna can’t sing.

It seems that everything you do, whether it’s your hair color or who you’re dating, becomes someone’s blog post and comes with criticism. Do you pay that stuff any mind?

I do whatever my heart tells me to do. As long as I’m not hurting anybody, I don’t think that anything I do is wrong. Whether they hate me or love me, I am in the entertainment industry. So of course I’m entertaining them. I think I’m doing my job pretty damn well.

I recently saw some pictures of you at a grocery store in a raunchy dress holding watermelons. Just saying that makes me laugh. Was that just you being you?

Yeah. People think that, “Oh, she’s trying to do this and that for attention.” If you’re my friend in real life, I do way crazier things. I’m one of the girls that you would love to have in your group of friends. I’m the spontaneous one that says, “Come on everyone. Let’s get naked and drive off somewhere.”

I want to hear more about that… READ FULL STORY »

Justin Bieber jumps over Usher for No. 1 spot

Justin-BieberAfter spending a week behind the R&B star who signed him, Justin Bieber returns to No. 1 on Billboard‘s latest album chart. Riding a successful appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live last Saturday, his My World 2.0 sold another 102,000 copies. Bieber’s previous release, My World, is also still in the top 10, at No. 8.  His latest set debuted at No. 1 and remained there for two weeks before his label head Usher knocked him to No. 2. last week selling, 329,000 copies. This week his Raymond v. Raymond drops to No.2, selling 92,000 copies.

The chart’s highest debut comes in at No. 3 from guitar hero Slash. His self-titled album and first as a solo artist sold 30,000. Erykah Badu’s New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh , last weeks No. 4 dropped to five spots to No. 9.

The second and last top 10 debut is Madonna‘s Sticky & Sweet Tour, at No. 10, selling 28,000. The live album from her 2009 tour is Madge’s 19th top 10 set. She’s now tied with Bob Dylan at sixth place for most top 10 albums ever. Getting to the seventh spot proves to be a tough order, though. They’ll have to nearly double their 19 to beat the Rolling Stones, who have 36.

So that is what’s new on the album chart. Bieber fever still has kids hot. Happy with the results? Did you buy a new album that didn’t make the top 10′s cut? Let us know.
