Usher regains No. 1 spot, Katy Perry debuts big on Billboard's Hot 100 chart

katy-perry-usherImage Credit: Perry: Mike RuizEminem‘s reign at the top didn’t last long. After pushing Usher aside last week, his “Not Afraid” has fallen from No. 1 to No. 6 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart. Usher‘s “OMG”reclaims the crown at No.1.

Katy Perry first single from her forthcoming set, “California Gurls” featuring Snoop Dogg, made a big splash on the charts. Her West Coast anthem debuts at No. 2 this week. Songs like Miley Cyrus’ 2009 “Party in the U.S.A” and The Notorious B.I.G.’s  1997 smash “Hypnotize” have also accomplished the feat. Perry is the fourteenth to do so.

B.o.B has two consecutive cuts in the top 10. His latest single, “Airplanes,” featuring Hayley Williams, climbs from No. 5 to No. 3. While his once chart-topping “Nothin’ On You,” featuring Bruno Mars dropped from No. 3 to No. 4.  Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart,” featuring Ludacris, backslides from No. 4 to No. 5.

Ke$ha‘s “Your Love Is My Drug” steps up a spot to No. 7. Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” enters the top 10, moving from No. 11 to No. 7.  This marks her seventh radio single in a row to reach the top 10.

Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” moves back three spots to No. 9. And rounding out the top, Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” does the same falling to No. 10.

Surprised Eminem dropped to No. 6 so fast? Happy Katy Perry debuted this high? Let us know.

    eminem will make a RECOVERY

  • Victor Eloy

well, it was pretty obvious this will happen to eminen’s new single…..cos it’s not that good….

in the other hand Perry’s new song is o.k, but it’s not the “it” song…..and I dont think it will be the song of the summer 2010….
I want to see how enrique iglesias new single which will be the theme for the new jersey shore season will perfom……it’s a terrific one!

  • matthew

Eminems song is far better than anything on the entire Billboard chart. You’l see evidence of this with his album sales. Its obvious radio discriminates against Eminem and DOES NOT play his music, either because only blacks can rap or they have a problem with censoring it.

    • dominic

no it has nothing to do with discriminating its just its not a radio-hit song, its a rap song. he released it to let all his fans know hes back so they can have faith in him again, to prepare them for his new album. it went to number one because everyone was stoked for a new eminem song, but its not one of those songs that gets straight radio play cuz its not a banger or anything like that

This is such just BS. Almost everyone in 2 of my classes have been requesting both top 40 stations here in LA play Eminems Not Afraid. Neither of them will!! And it’s a shame! Considering we’re currently drowning in a sea of meaningless dance tracks, with nothing of substance to offer anyone. in this economy, this song is refreshing and welcomed. It’s great song! BUT it’s Interesting that ALL of these Songs climbing the charts, because of their Ridiculious amount of airplay, are from artists that have either appeared on American Idol, or have some type of connection to Simon Fuller, mostly through the songwriters he reps. Also interesting is he spends tons of advertising dollars @ these stations, promoting idol and his other pet projects like If I can Dream! Can anyone say Favoritism? It’s just wrong, Not Afraid deserves Airplay! It debut at #1 & had the highest 1st wks sales this yr. Obviously people want to hear it! What the heck did these other songs do to merrit such a huge amount airplay? Nothing! A smaller station played Not Afraid this wk just 4 times. One my way home thursday, I heard it played as the stations 5th most requested songs on it’s top top 10, with just those few plays! Dear Radio Stations close to 600,000 downloads in the first 11 days = BIGGER Audience! Duh! And What’s the point of being the #1 Hot single in country, if it isn’t to bring it to the publics attention? The top 40 radio stations in the top 5 markets is giving Billboard & its audience the finger!!

Dear EW how about do a story on whether the radio stations are showing favoritism to Simon Fuller? Or find out why the Top 40 stations in the largest markets are are dissing Eminem’s new work, even though it’s very loved by almost every who’s heard it, and has gotten great reviews!

      • Lillian Gish

@domnic “its not a radio-hit song, its a rap song” Excuse me? What the heck does the fact that it’s a rap song have to do with whether it’s a radio hit or not? He’s a Rapper, so yes it’s a rap/ hip hop song. If that’s the reason then it most certainly is discriminating! Not Afraid is very much reminiscent of his song “Lose Yourself”, and according to wiki, Lose Yourself is the most successful “rap song” of all time! It spent a record-breaking 12 weeks atop the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the longest-running #1 of 2002! If PD’s and DJ’s are thinking about this song the same way you are, they are definitely discriminating against the artist!

    • beb

Radio IS starting to play the song, though. The latest MediaBase numbers show him gaining ground on both Rhythmic (26-19) and Top 40 (47-37) formats. It’s a situation similar to Taio Cruz’s Break Your Heart – big sales out of the gate, with radio struggling to catch up.

  • emmanuel

you had me going there victor thinking you were all credible and stuff, until you brought up enrique. he may be a nice guy and all, but if “i like it” is what you’re referring to, that’s not really going anywhere. his vocal stylings are just not appealing…not very manly for male cred or seductive for the women either…

    • Neither is Justin Bieber’s

Yet it still makes girls wanna throw panties at him.

  • Sarah

Katy Perry’s song is so-so. I like the beat but the chorus doesn’t do it for me.

  • beb

Alejandro is #8 this week, not #7. Billboard made the same mistake in its write-up.

  • uy

Wow every song in the Top 10 SUX!

    • kk

Yes. Manufactured rubbish. Not a single instrument played in any top 10 song. All computer programs. Too bad 12 year old girls love this crap.

      • beb

Last time I checked, a ukulele is an instrument…

  • Menchy

7 Top 10 hits in a row… Lady GaGa is on fire.

  • Victor Eloy

Emmanuel his new single “I like it” it’s not that bad, yes I have to admit his voice is kind of peculiar, but it’s o.k to me…..
anyway, let’s see how it goes on billboard…
anyway Eminem’s single will fade away soom from the charts, about Alejandro that is a Ace of Base copycat!
I used to like GaGa, but now I think she is overexposed…she should take a break….
Though “Break your heart” found hard radio playing, since it reached the top it has been doing really great….
there should be more songs like “hey soul sister”, a terrific tune.

    • Lillian Gish

There’s a bunch of 17 to 19 year old’s at the Y near Compton where I volunteer that hope your wrong about the Eminem song! It makes them feel good, they’d like to see it hit #1!

      • Lillian Gish

#1 On the radio charts, that is. But recovering it’s spot at #1 here would be nice also!

  • Victor Eloy

let’s see what will be Floptina’s new single after her failed lead single that sunk on the charts…

    • MM3

  • MultiPass

Only Gaga would dare to bring back the Ace of Base sound, have the cheek to release as a single AND still get a top ten hit out of it without a video. Got give that girl credit where it is due, she is savvy and freakin talented.

  • Victor Eloy

Ace of Base sound was terrific! I used to listened to them a lot back in 1994 during all that she wants and the sign era…..
yes she was risky, because of the sound, because of the name of the song, but she is not original at all….
Poor X-tina, Floptina or whatever is even a more pathtic case, I guess she will release a ballad as teh second single with a different image for the music video..
th thing is it seems this year will be all about electropop…I mean Usher, Floptina, Enrique,Kesha,GaGa, Taio Cruz, BEP, and everybody else…

  • Cory Roberson

That is irrelevant Matthew. Eminem has proven that he can flow with the best of them. The song went #1 and its not even i

alejandro is sure to be in the top 3.i Love that song soo friken much! Not Afraid sux. The only reason it went up so high was because it was eminems new single.i hope it gets out of the top 10 soon.

  • TUTU

I’m proud of Katy Perry, she has had a break and is time for her to return. “Not Afraid” would soon go away, I can feel it. “Alejandro” just might top the billboard if the music video for the song is great!
