Rihanna channels Slash in 'Rockstar 101' video: Watch here

rockstarWe knew Rihanna was familiar with the drums. But in her latest video, “Rockstar 101,” the good girl gone bad goes Slash. Whipping out a top hat, a vintage pair of black sunglasses, and of course a guitar, Rihanna does her best impersonation of the Guns N’ Roses’ axeman—who is featured on the single.

This video is a hard left turn from her playful last single, “Rude Boy.” The black and white clip is goth chic, still living up to Rihanna’s fashion icon standards. Just grimier. She starts out playing with a garage band (look out for Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker) wearing a bathing suit made of chains.  In other shot, she slips into a sexy cat outfit and crawls through a snowy forest.

Melina Matsoukas directed this clip. She also handled Rihanna’s last two singles, “Rude Boy” and “Hard.” Matsoukas has an incredible ability to bring songs to life with her edgy visuals. This video proves their partnership is a consistent winner. Check out the video after the jump.

Let us know what you think about Rihanna’s “Rockstar 101.” Would you let her in your band?

Nasally and off-key as always. Ugh.

5th video in less than 6 months…Rih Rhi sure does sell some digital songs, but constantly struggles to sell albums. Not sure what Def Jam is thinking with this as her summer single, but I prefer the Chew Fu Teacher Pet Fix on her just released “Rated R (Remixed)” disc. This song shoulda just appeared on Slash’s solo cd that just dropped last month. And I understand “Rated R” follows a dark theme, but I think this videow as shot a while ago, even if its the same director, she is recylcing the same look, only with different shades of dark make-up. The Slash get up is freakky uncanny though! She gets points for that!

Love the song, one of my faves off of her album. I hope Stupid in Love will be next.

    Where’s “Te Amo”?

  • npr

te amo is just the europe single… sad!!! it would have been a hit, or at least a (gay) pop culture moment.

  • Classy!

I love Rihanna, an deverything she does. She’s such a visionary and versatile recording artist.

Gahh… I was gonna go as Slash this Halloween, but now people will think I’m channeling Rihnna as Slash! Thanks a lot, Rihanna! Oh, and by the way, dressing up like a rock icon and making a song called “Rockstar 101″ does not make you an actual rock star anymore than me dressing up as a nurse makes an actual nurse.

Well sorry for you, but Slash already said he was very flattered that Rihanna emulated him so who cares. This song is just fun…Can’t we all feel like rockstars at least for one day? Also, you should have channeled Slash last year that way everyone will automatically think you inspired her…Get real and get over yourself.

Lame but this is Rihanna so I’m not surprised.

I don’t know about my band, but I’d let her in my bed for sure.

Rihanna is lucky that her producers create such catchy and fun songs for her, but unfortunately they can never be properly brought to life due to her nasal and monotone voice that just about kills everything. This song is miles ahead of Christina Aguilera’s “Not Myself Tonight”, yet I would have preferred it if Christina sang “Rockstar” instead. Also, if I wasn’t told that Slash plays guitar on this song, I would have never known it. I don’t hear any hints of guitar, it probably got drowned out by the synthesized sounds. At least a mini-solo would’ve been nice, that way his presence could still be felt on the song.

Please, please Rihanna, go away. Overrated, and can’t sing. This has NOT been a strong album for her. And frankly, I just found “Rude Boy” flat-out offensive. So glad she’s such a “role model” for young women!

Why are people saying dressing up like a rockstar doesn’t make her a rockstar? This song is talking about the persona and not being an actual rock musician! It’s not rocket science people! Say you don’t like the song/video and keep it moving!!! This is a summer anthem! People are blasting it in their cars on their way to the clubs and partying like rockstars!!! That’s what it’s all about people!!!:-*

The video is striking and stunning. Too bad the song’s lame.

  • sheila

I think it’s horrible I dont like it AT ALL !!!

  • MikE

She should have wore cornrows and dressed up like Axl.
