Bret Michaels talks Miley Cyrus duet: 'It got really controversial for no reason, and it's kind of a bummer'

Last year, Michaels helped Cyrus with her cover of his band Poison’s hit “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” She repaid the favor by singing on his new single “Nothing to Lose,” whose suggestive lyrics have raised some eyebrows. So how exactly did the two singers, ages 47 and 17 respectively, link up in the studio, anyway? “Miley and her family have been friends of mine for a long time,” the Celebrity Apprentice winner, who’s recovering nicely from a recent brain hemorrhage, tells EW. “I know people tried to start all these rumors, but I’ve been friends with her family forever.”

Some time ago, Michaels happened to be working on his album Custom Built (due July 6) in the same recording studio as Cyrus. When she offered to sing harmony on “Nothing to Lose,” he agreed right away. “I guess in hindsight I should have looked more at the maturity of the song,” Michaels concedes. “But she was never singing it to me, so I never thought about it. It got really controversial for no reason, and it’s kind of a bummer, because it took it away from how beautiful the song really is.”

Gossip or not, he’s happy to sing his duet partner’s praises. “I will say this about Miley,” Michaels adds. “She can sit down at the piano or with a guitar and she can sing and she can play. I think she’s going through that transitional period where you are going from a kid to a teenager to an adult, and that’s a tough transition. I think she’s one of the few musicians that can actually do it.” —Reporting by Dalton Ross

bret has always liked them young. in the poison days he had plenty of under age groupies including one 15 year old later named chole, who became a porn star.
this is not his first much younger duet partner either. remember Jessica Andrews?

    • jay

The blame falls on Mileys dad, fame whore, just like jessica simpsons dad. Do ANYTHING for fame!

  • crispy

No, she can’t Bret.. then again you’ve just recently suffered a stroke so I wouldn’t expect you to think logically. What teen in America has lasting power? Justin Bieber who else? Haha.. Miley is a loser just like Bret maybe they are meant for each other?

    • Andrea

      BTW—Justin Bieber is from Canada.

    • Matt

Justin Bieber!? I hope you’re kidding. There’s no way in hell anybody will listen to Bieber 5 years from now.

      • crispy

1st. Duh he is from Canada but he lives in America, idiot.
2nd. Wishful thinking Matt. I understand your life has gotten you no where. But he has and I think we will be hearing his music many, many years from now.

      • D2

Yeah crispy, just like the Jonas Brothers and even the Backstreet Boys are still huge. The teen throb shtick will only get you so far.

      • crispy

Actually D2 if I’m not mistaken the Jonas Brothers and the Backstreet Boys still have decent standing careers. Both are currently touring with sellout shows. Try again though ;)

    • d

Crispy, I’m wondering what other singers you do like, or if its just Bieber.

    • tedriens

i dont think bret or miley are losers theyr winners or

    • kim

@Andrea: the comment was on teens having a long career. How can you focus on whre Justin is from? And by the way, it “in” America, not “from America.”

  • Wrath of Colin

If you hate them both Crispy then why bother even commenting. You’re the loser. I’m just glad Bret is recovering.

    • crispy

Because I knew it would piss a moron like you off ;)

  • ashley

the lyrics are pretty suggestive, but, whatever. miley is clearly angling for a more mature image and i suppose that’s part of it.

  • Nc

What is really sad is the fact that the song sounds better when it’s just Bret.

It is good either way – but better alone.

Seriously, why do all of the jealous people (usually male) post on these threads?
Is your life really so bad that this is the only enjoyment that you have?

  • Jose

OMG you ppl think the worst from everyone get a life … not everyones a bad person bret is a wonderful person so is Billy ray get off your high horse

  • jingo

Miley is exactly how Bret says. Her familey is nice and raised her well. I think some of you were short-changed when it came to a proper upbringing, however.

  • Tabitha

People need to grow up and stop putting so much criticism out there. You know people have been singing duets with younger artists for some time. Its not about age it is about how well their voices go together and if you’ve ever heard the song it is an extordinary song. I love Bret Micheals and he is good at what he does and he is making money doing what he does so obviously he is doing something right. So instead of judging listen to to the song!

  • elway

    His music sucks!!!!

  • JerryW

If he is a fan of miley, I hope he is not chosen for Idol as a judge..his taste stinks.

  • monleo

I still love you Bret no matter what!!! He is just trying to live his life once and for all guys, back off for God’s sake!

  • Tasha

Bret has had a very long successful career and i cannot believe some people have the nerve to get on here and try to bash him or his music.. besides being an outstanding and talented entertainer he is probably the nicest celebrity you could ever meet in your life. he cares about his fans and you can see that clearly. as for miley i think she is talented as well. she is doing a whole lot better than any of us would have expected and now she is developing into a young woman and i think its great. i think we will see both bret and miley for years to come… or at least i hope so.

  • tamara

Why did you break up miley mum and dad?
