Katy Perry's 'California Gurls': The first mega-smash of the summer?

Tagged:

Katy_PerrySPF your boomboxes and polish up your Ray-Ban game, kiddos—’tis the season of the summer jam.

Every year, a clutch of eager contenders run the gauntlet, but only a lucky handful make it all the way to beach blanket babylon; in 2009, those honors went to the likes of Kid Cudi, Phoenix, and Keri Hilson.

Today, Santa Barbara native Perry makes a naked grab for this year’s seasonal-champ ring, strapping on her rollerskates for a Jeep-bumping neon-pop ode to the popsicle-maiming bikini vixens of the Golden State, “California Gurls.”

Stream the song—it’s the first, Snoop Dogg-assisted single off her upcoming still-untitled album—here at her official website and tell us: Top of the pops by June, or out with the old Memorial Day BBQ coal? Who else will own this summer’s airwaves?

Pearl Jam's Mike McCready on composing music for 'Fringe', taking singing lessons, upcoming PJ reissues: A Music Mix Q&A!

Mike-McCready-fringeImage Credit: Rick Diamond/Getty Images; Justin Stephens/FoxI do not know if you are watching Fringe over on the Fox network, but if you are not, may I ask why? Are you afraid to let yourself be happy? Do you like Glee? Well, Fringe did a musical episode last week that was sort of like if Glee and Raymond Chandler went on a date to a Tim Burton movie. No? Still not into it?

Hmm.

What if I told you that Pearl Jam guitar wizard Mike McCready wrote some music for last night’s episode? Is that something you might be interested in? Yes? Oh good. Then here is a Q&A with McCready where we talk about that, as well as his new hobby (singing lessons!) and some ideas being tossed around for the upcoming reissue of PJ’s second album, Vs. And if you missed last night’s Fringe, you can watch it after the jump. Because now you want to! READ FULL STORY »

Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum returns with a beautiful acoustic set at Chris Knox benefit show

neutral-milk-hotelImage Credit: Will WestbrookNone of the 500 or so people who bought $75 tickets for the Chris Knox benefit show held at N.Y.C.’s Le Poisson Rouge last night were quite sure what we were getting into. We knew that a motley group of musicians and comedians would take the stage to raise money for Knox, the New Zealand indie-pop hero who suffered a stroke last summer. One of them, stunningly, would be Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel — a man as private as he is brilliant, who has performed very, very rarely since 2001. (He’s pictured above, second from the left with the rest of Neutral Milk Hotel in 1998.) Beyond that? Zip. The event’s organizers refused to provide the performers’ order or start times beforehand. Mangum’s “very short acoustic set” could be coming at any time between 6:30 P.M. and 1 A.M.

Standing in line outside Le Poisson Rouge before the show, I wondered if Mangum wouldn’t turn up at the very end of the night, play “Sign the Dotted Line,” the stirring Knox cover he contributed to last year’s Stroke tribute CD, and disappear again. I found myself thinking of an old Jewish folk song, “Dayenu“: Seeing Mangum sing even just that one tune would have been enough for me. So I went downstairs and settled in for the first few performers. Some of them, like TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone and singer-songwriter Sharon van Etten, were quite good. Out of nowhere around 8:35 P.M., comic Rachel Feinstein ended her raunchy stand-up routine with a casual, “Okay, Jeff Mangum is next!” Suddenly the room got very loud. READ FULL STORY »

Muse announced as first artists on upcoming 'Twilight: Eclipse' soundtrack; more to come

muse-eclipseImage Credit: Danny Clinch; Kimberley FrenchShocker, vamp fans: Stephanie Meyer’s most favorite mortals, anthemic U.K. pomp-rockers Muse, will lead the upcoming Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack, due June 8.

The band’s Twilight hat trick continues with the original song “Neutron Star Collision (Love Is Forever),” debuting at radio May 17; more soundtrack names are expected to be released early next week.

Will Eclipse move away from the predominantly Pitchfork-y New Moon lineup, which showcased indie all-stars Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear, and Death Cab for Cutie and boosted baby bands like Band of Skulls, Sea Wolf, Anya Maria, and Hurricane Bells? Should alumni like Paramore and Death Cab return?

Will artists in the tears-of-blood Twilight wheelhouse—say, My Chemical Romance, Evanescence, or AFI—finally join the fray? Or should Robert Pattinson just bite his lip and moan longingly over a C-F-G chord progression?

Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Bret Michaels releases emotional new song called 'Wasted Time'

Filed under: News and tagged:

brett-michaelsImage Credit: Jordan Strauss/WireImage.comBret Michaels has released a track to iTunes called “Wasted Time.” The song is a ballad, one firmly in vintage Poison territory. But the most remarkable thing about the track is how ominous and portent-laden the lyrics seem, given Michaels’ recent health problems. “Lately I just ain’t been myself,” he sings at the start of the song. “Lately, I’ve been feeling something else.” At another point he croons, “There’s a time to hurt, a time to heal.”

Anyway, check it out, and tell us what you think.

Taylor Swift says her third album will be about 'boys and love'

Filed under: News and tagged:

Taylor-SwiftImage Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosTaylor Swift has gotten a lot of mileage out of her sophomore full-length, Fearless, since its November 2008 release. All good album cycles come to an end, though, and Swift is already dropping hints about her next project. MTV News caught up with her at the Time 100 gala (hat tip: Vulture), where she told them that work on her third album “is going great actually.” Swift continued, “I’ve been writing it for the last two years, so this summer it’s all about the finishing touches and getting in there in the studio and recording the last couple songs.” What sort of themes, the MTV reporter asked, might Swift’s new album take on? “What do you think? Boys and love.” Of course.

On a scale of one to 10, how psyched are you to hear Swift’s next album? Aside from more songs about boys and love, what do you hope it will contain?

Ke$ha to play Nashville flood benefit concert; GAC will air live national telethon from the Ryman

Filed under: News and tagged: , , ,

It’s not even been a week since the skies opened above Nashville, and the first large-scale fundraisers are starting to come together in hopes of raising money for the flooded town, where there’s an estimated $1 billion of damage, not counting emotions. Vince Gill is, of course, ahead of the curve — he’s hosting a local telethon on Nashville’s WSMV-TV tonight — but with much of Music City still stuck in the muck, the good samaritan work is just beginning.

Great American Country Television (a.k.a. GAC) has announced a live national telethon on May 16 at the historic Ryman Auditorium to benefit the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, an organization that’s already on the scene helping out. Brad Paisley, Lady Antebellum, Dierks Bentley, and Rodney Atkins are already scheduled to perform, and more acts are sure to be added as we get closer to the date. The telethon will air commercial free from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.

But you don’t have to be a country fan to get in on the action: Party-pop star and Nashville native Ke$ha is putting on a benefit concert June 16th at the Limelight in her hometown, with 100 percent of the profits going to relief for humans as well as animals. Tickets for the show are on sale now.

We’ll keep you updated on further fundraising efforts as they happen. And as always, feel free to use the comments section to keep us updated, as well as each other. Hang in there, Nashvegas! Help is on the way.

Kelly Clarkson: Is her new leak dissing Ryan Tedder?

Filed under: Let's Argue!, News and tagged: ,

tedder-clarksonImage Credit: Lester Cohen/WireImage.comAnother day, another leaked new track from Kelly Clarkson. The latest one seems to be called “Wash Rinse Repeat,” and everyone’s talking about how it rips…well, someone.

Who, exactly, is the target of lyrics like “Does it sound familiar, does it linger in your ear/Like something you remember from just last year” and “Music from the past, from the present, well, just last week/We will change a note and get away with it, wait and see”? Idolator takes those as thinly veiled shots at OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. (That’s him and Clarkson in happier times above.) You’ll recall that Tedder co-wrote both Beyoncé’s “Halo” and Clarkson’s “Already Gone,” leading to a minor tiff last summer when Clarkson felt the two tunes were too similar. Now Clarkson has recorded a song that seems to be about industry pros recycling hooks. (Or she recorded it at some point, anyway — there’s no indication of how new this leak is.) Sounds like a plausible theory.

Then there are more general slams, like the one that serves as this tune’s classic Clarkson belt-it-out chorus: “I’ll be playing God and you can be my [airhorn]/The only compromise is you get to pick/Which of these formulas is your perfect fit?/Wash, rinse, repeat, why are you fighting it?” Idolator interprets lines like that as attacks on Clarkson’s label. To me, they seem more likely aimed at the music biz as a whole than any particular person or entity. Still, if Clarkson is implying that her label has been interfering with her artistic expression, it wouldn’t be the first time. A representative for Sony Music bigwig Clive Davis, who has both mentored and reportedly clashed with Clarkson in the past, tells the Music Mix that this song “has nothing to do with Clive.”

We’ve reached out to Clarkson’s and Tedder’s reps for comment. In the meantime, who do you think “Wash Rinse Repeat” is directed at?

Usher earns ninth No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single, Jay-Z gets 17th top 10

usher-jay-zImage Credit: Kent Miller/PR PhotosAs we reported yesterday, B.o.B steps aside this week, making way for Usher‘s “OMG,” to sit pretty at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart. B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” now is No. 2, while Rihnna’s “Rude Boy” backs into No. 3.

Lady Antebellum‘s “Need You Now” steps back from No. 4 to No. 5 and Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” from No. 5 to No. 6.

Don’t feel too bad for B.o.B. The rapper’s new single “Airplanes,” featuring Eminem and Hayley Williams is making a run for the top spot, shooting up from No. 9 to No. 7.

Ke$ha’s “Your Love Is My Drug” repeats at No. 8. Jason DeRulo’s “In My Head” falls from No. 7 to No. 9.

Jay-Z‘s “Young Forever” rounds out the top 10, jumping from No. 12 to No. 10. He now leads all rappers with the most to top 10 singles ever. He’s got 17 under his belt. Before “Young,” Jay’s 16 tied him with Ludacris. Luda’s on his heals, though. His “My Chick Bad,” featuring Nicki Minaj is at No. 11 this week.

Drake’s debut single “Over” from his forthcoming debut, Thank Me Later, moves up from No. 16 to No. 14. As does Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” from No. 20 to No. 16.

Do you think Ludacris is going to catch Jay-Z soon? Happy Usher’s at No. 1 again?

Lady Gaga wants you to see the parts of her 'American Idol' performance that Fox edited out

Not only was Lady Gaga’s performance of “Alejandro” on last night’s American Idol pre-taped — she says it was also edited to pieces. “here’s my full american idol performance ALEJANDRO,” Gaga tweeted this morning. “Fox chopped up my performance in 4 places.”

Her tweet linked to Perez Hilton’s site, where the unedited six-and-a-half-minute clip, including a “Bad Romance” intro, is posted. Check out Gaga’s full Idol performance over there and let us know how you think it compares to the truncated version that aired on Fox.
