Categories: U2

bonoImage Credit: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.comU2 has indefinitely postponed the North American leg of its 360º tour until next year, the band announced today via press release. The rockers tabled 16 dates scheduled for this June and July after Bono suffered a major back injury. The press release cites “severe compression of the sciatic nerve” and “a serious tear in the ligament and a herniated disc.” The singer was discharged from a hospital in Munich after emergency surgery on May 21. Doctors expect his recovery to last “at least eight weeks.”

The press release encourages fans to keep their tickets, and promises that the gigs will be rescheduled soon. Were you planning on seeing any of those 360º tour dates? Share your get-well-soon wishes for Bono in the comments below.

Ne-Yo unleashes 'Beautiful Monster': Stream the first single from upcoming album here

Ne-YoImage Credit: Chris StanfordIt’s been two years since Ne-Yo released his last album, Year of the Gentleman, but we’ll be hearing a full-length LP from him soon. This morning he debuted “Beautiful Monster,” the first single from his forthcoming Libra Scale album, on his Myspace page, and EW has a stream of the song here.

Similar to the first single from his last set, “Closer,” Ne-Yo puts traditional R&B to the side and goes for more of a European club sound. “Monster” was produced by duo Stargate, who are responsible for Ne-Yo’s biggest hits “So Sick,” “Because of You,” and the aforementioned “Closer.” Over jabbing synths and a whipping bass, the singer-songwriter croons about how the cuts and hits he takes from a vixen hurt so good.

“I don’t mind,” he sings. “In fact I like it. Though I’m terrified. I’m turned on, but scared of you.” It’s a solid cut, one I expect to make a steady climb up the charts. Ne-Yo’s brand of progressive R&B has a been a winner so far. “Monster” should be a beast, too.

What do you think of Ne-Yo’s first single? Check it after the jump and let us know. READ FULL STORY »

John Fogerty talks about being honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame -- and having George W. Bush as a fan

Categories: Keith Urban

John-FogertyImage Credit: Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWhen John Fogerty was writing the baseball-centric 1985 single “Centerfield,” he had no idea it would become so beloved by fans of America’s national pastime. “No, not a clue, ” says the singer-songwriter and onetime Creedence Clearwater Revival head honcho.”Rock ‘n’ roll has some built-in political stances whereby things are considered lame, to put it mildly. You’re really swimming against the stream to write a sports song. I knew the possibility that it would be considered lame was looming.”

In fact, the song became such a hit with sports fans the Baseball Hall of Fame announced today that Fogerty will play the song at this year’s induction ceremony, which takes place in Cooperstown on July 25. “They’ve never honored a song this way before,” says Fogerty, who is also releasing a 25th anniversary edition of the platinum-selling Centerfield album on June 29. “I’m going to be there with a big smile on my face and great pride in my heart. Even though I’m not being honored as a baseball player, I am, in a sense, rubbing elbows with Babe Ruth. It’s a wondrous thing to me. Because I do really love baseball.”

And “Centerfield” really is loved by baseball fans, including one George W. Bush, the ex-president and former part owner of the Texas Rangers , who in 2000 declared the track to be his favorite song. How does that sit with Fogerty, whose politics, it is fair to say, are considerably more liberal than that of America’s last commander-in-chief? “It really does make you scratch your head at the power of music,” he chuckles. “All kidding aside, I would probably say, ‘Boy, I hope at some point he listens to my other songs.”

I’ve posted a clip of Fogerty playing “Centerfield” with Keith Urban after the break (check out the CCR man’s baseball bat-guitar!). Are you a Fogerty fan? What do you think of his song being honored by the Baseball Hall of Fame?

Christina Aguilera postpones U.S. tour

Categories: Christina Aguilera

Christina Aguilera has canceled plans for a North American summer tour, according to a statement released on Tuesday, saying her appearance in an upcoming movie and promotion of a new record do not allow adequate rehearsal time, Reuters reports.

In a full statement obtained by EW, the singer’s spokesperson says: “Christina Aguilera’s summer tour has been moved to 2011 due to prior commitments that the singer had made to her film Burlesque and to the promotion of her new album Bionic. The singer felt she needed more time to rehearse the show and with less than a month between the album release and tour date this wasn’t possible. New dates will be announced later this year. Refunds are available at point of purchase.”

The summer tour was scheduled to start in July. New dates will be announced later this year, and refunds are available where tickets were purchased. Bionic, Aguilera’s first album of new music since 2006, is due out on June 8. Burlesque releases in theaters this November.

Slipknot bassist Paul Gray found dead at 38

Categories: Metal, Misc., R.I.P.

Slipknot-Paul-Gray-diedImage Credit: Annamaria DiSantoMultiplatinum nu-metal collective Slipknot, known for their ever-present face masks, horrorcore imagery, and theatrical stage shows, lost bassist Paul Gray today; he was 38.

TMZ says, via information obtained from the Urbandale Police Department, that Gray’s body was found by an employee at an Iowa hotel early this morning, and the Des Moines Register has reported that there is no evidence of foul play; an autopsy with toxicology tests is scheduled for tomorrow, May 25.

The band’s publicist verified his death, but did not provide additional details: “I can confirm that the news is sadly true,” she tells EW, “But that is all I can offer at this time.”

Controversial church announces plans to protest outside Ronnie James Dio's memorial service, thanks God for his death

Categories: Metal

Westboro-Baptist-church-dioImage Credit: Larry Marano/Retna Ltd; Scott Olson/Getty ImagesThe highly controversial Westboro Baptist Church has announced plans to picket this Sunday’s memorial service for ex-Black Sabbath singer Ronnie James Dio in Los Angeles.

“This rebel had a God-given platform – for decades – which he should have utilized to publish the truth of God,” the WBC declared in a press release. “Instead, he used that platform – for decades – to teach rebellion against God, in the form glorifying atheism, promoting the devil horn hand sign & other such idolatries. Now he has been cut off by an Angry God & cast into hell.” The release also thanked God for “the dead brute Dio.” The Church, which is based in Topeka, Kansas, and in large part consists of single family, is infamous for picketing funerals to protest America’s tolerance of homosexuality.

On Saturday, Ronnie James Dio’s wife Wendy responded to the proposed picket with the following statement on her late husband’s website: “Ronnie hates prejudice and violence! We need to turn the other cheek on these people that only know how to hate someone they didn’t know. We only know how to love someone we know!”

And who could disagree with that? Well, the Westboro Baptist Church, obviously. At this point, there’s a lot more I could write about an organization who thinks it’s doing the Almighty’s work by turning up to funerals with homophobic signage. But instead I would urge you to check out a documentary about the Church which was made a few years back by British journalist Louis Theroux. The film is a terrific example of giving people enough rope to do you-know-what with. You’ll find the first part after the jump.

What do you think about the Church’s decision to picket Dio’s memorial service? And about Wendy Dio’s response?

Two-year-old girl covers Justin Bieber, awaits record contract

toddler-girl-baby-coverSomebody had to step to last week’s viral junior high Gaga cover kid—somebody who just recently learned to stand, period.

Meet Ella, a two-year-old who graduates from babyhood to “Baby”-hood with her tweety-bird YouTube rendition of Justin Bieber’s bouncy pop smash—she’s a little shaky on the intro, but her TV-remote-microphone game is on point, and she pretty much nails the multisyllabic chorus (though, alas, no assist from Tiny Ludacris).

Also: Biebs himself may want to take a bangs cue from MC Ella’s blue butterfly barrette; it really helps steal the sightline advantage back from aggressively anti-Bieber revolving doors: READ FULL STORY »

The Pussycat Dolls 2.0: Meet the new members, including a former 'So You Think You Can Dance' contestant

Pussycat Doll creator Robin Antin announced the newest members of PCD through her twitter page on May 22nd, and debuted a photo of lead singer (and Dancing with the Stars finalist) Nicole Scherzinger along with the new gals.

Included in this version of PCD is former So You Think You Dance contestant and Fame star Kherington Payne (far left), plus America’s Best Dance Crew runner-up Rino Nakasone-Razalan, former Lakers Girl Vanessa Curry, and former Girlicious contestant Jamie Lee Ruiz.

Of course this is not the first change to the PCD line-up, with Scherzinger as the lone consistent member. And many groups have changed their roster over the years to varying degrees of success (Van Halen; Journey) but PCD has sort of become like a modern-day Menudo with its various incarnations.

Will the new girls help PCD return to the top of the charts? Maybe. Confession: I’m a total PCD convert. I have a PCD hoodie that I occasionally [ed note: occasionally-often] wear in my office. And just for old time’s sake, here’s my favorite video by the sexy songstresses: READ FULL STORY »

Courtney Love to sell her stake in Nirvana catalogue for $162 million? Not true, say reps

courtney-loveImage Credit: PRN/PR Photos; Everett CollectionAn item in the New York Daily News’ Rush & Malloy gossip column positing that Courtney Love was ready to sell her 75% stake in the Nirvana song catalogue to global investment firm Oaktree Capital—complete with a quote from an “insider” stating that “Courtney thinks [it] comes with too many memories … It’s haunted”—spread like interweb head lice yesterday, far and wide.

But no one, it seems, called Love’s reps to see if there was any credence to the story, and it turns out, there isn’t. There’s “nothing to it,” her publicist told EW in a succinctly worded, pronoun-free statement. “Not a clue [how the rumor started]. Never even heard of that company Rush & Molloy reference.”

Nevertheless, this is hardly the first time Love’s ownership of late husband Kurt Cobain’s estate has made the news; in 2001, she fought surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic over the then-unreleased track “You Know You’re Right”; and in  2006, sold 25% of her share of the band’s publishing rights to Larry Mestal, a former Virgin Records executive, for $50 million. Last fall, Unsanctioned use of Cobain’s avatar in a 2009 Guitar Hero release actually united Love with longtime foes Grohl and Novoselic temporarily; both vehemently opposed it in public statements (although only Love, as sole executor of her husband’s estate, threatened a lawsuit against Guitar Hero parent company Activision).

Happy birthday Bob Dylan! The bard turns 69 today

bob-dylanImage Credit: Danny ClinchI’m still not entirely sure how many roads a man must walk down before you can call him a man. But I do know how many years ago Bob Dylan was born. 69! Yes, it’s Mr. Zimmerman‘s birthday. Feel free to mark the occasion by reinterpreting the “Happy Birthday to You” song in a manner that renders it totally unrecognizable. It’s what Bob would want! (Alternatively, you can check out the great clip of “Like a Rolling Stone” that I’ve posted after the jump.) READ FULL STORY »
