LIGHTS paints outside the lines: Watch her colorful 'Second Go' video here

lights-videoImage Credit: Caitlin CronenbergIf the recording artist known as LIGHTS ever offers to paint your house or apartment for free, make sure you watch her new music video before saying yes. Just a word to the wise. As you’ll see in the “Second Go” clip — which we’re pleased to be streaming exclusively right here after the jump — the Canadian electro singer has some slightly unorthodox ideas about interior decoration.

“Second Go” is the latest single from The Listening, the debut album that LIGHTS (a.k.a. Valerie Poxleitner) released last fall. She filmed the whole splattery video in a single take. Looks like a fun shoot! If you missed LIGHTS on her recent stint touring the country with sincere synth-pop compadre Owl City, you can catch her this summer at select Lilith Fair dates. Til then, take a look at “Second Go” after the jump and let us know what you think.

Taylor Hanson on performing live with Conan O'Brien: 'He's got chops!'

The now-alarmingly-mature gentlemen of Hanson got the chance to step out on stage with Conan O’Brien Saturday night, when the Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour hit their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma — a collaboration due in part, at least, to O’Brien’s wife. (According to Taylor Hanson, she’s a fan.) The trio — whose super-fun new album, Shout It Out, drops June 8 — joined other notable guests like Pearl Jam as the night’s local music heroes, running through new single “Thinking ‘Bout Somethin’” and a cover of Three Dog Night’s “Never Been to Spain” (but they have been to Oklahoma, etc.) with O’Brien backing on guitar.

Just in case we weren’t already sure of this, Taylor says that Coco is a “total gentleman,” and a “great musician.” “He’s obviously self-deprecating as a guy, but he’s got chops!” says the middle Hanson (who is now 27, and has four kids of his own, so, you know, mmmbop that). “He can get around on the guitar, and he can also get around on the keyboard, and I told him when we were there, I think he should do a Conan record. I think people would dig it.” In even better news, the legendary Coco Unemployment Beard — which has been verging on vagrant for the past few weeks — seems to be back under control. “The beard was not as unkempt as I thought it was,” confirms Taylor. “I think he tamed it a little bit for Tulsa.”

Check out the trio’s performances after the jump, plus a bonus appearance from the I’m Not Sure We Can Legally Call Him The ‘Masturbating Bear’ Anymore Masturbating Bear. Children, avert your eyes. READ FULL STORY »

Meet Travis Garland, the new discovery from Perez Hilton performing on tonight's 'American Idol': it's a Music Mix Q&A!

Travis-GarlanImage Credit: Chris PolkTonight’s American Idol results show will feature a special performance from Travis Garland, a former boy band member — he was in short-lived group NLT, which (fun fact!) also featured Glee‘s Kevin McHale — now striking out on his own with a new single called “Believe.” But Garland’s not alone in his solo quest: he’s also got the support of the world’s biggest gossip blogger-turned-music mogul, Perez Hilton, who brought Garland to the attention of Idol producer Simon Fuller. We got the two lads on the phone for a quick convo about their collaboration, and Garland’s plans for world domination.

Entertainment Weekly: Travis, how are you feeling walking up to the big Idol performance?
Travis Garland: I’m feeling excited, anxious, nervous, but mostly ready. Ready is the strongest feeling I’m having right now.
Perez Hilton: He’s ready. I’ve been going to rehearsals. It’s so amazing. They’re just perfecting it now.

Jason Derulo set the Idol performance bar pretty high this year — Travis, are you going to top it?
PH: Who?

Jason Derulo had a pretty great performance on the show earlier this season.
PH: Who? [giggles] I’m only kidding. READ FULL STORY »

'Glee' Exclusive: Susan Boyle to play the McKinley High lunch lady?

Glee has already had some phenomenal guest-stars so far, including Josh Groban, Kristin Chenoweth, and, last night, Neil Patrick Harris. Now, EW has learned a certain music (and YouTube) sensation may be appearing on the hit Fox series in a season two Christmas episode: Susan Boyle. The Britain’s Got Talent runner-up is conveniently on the same record label, Columbia, as the Glee cast. And who would Boyle play? “I have two words for you: Lunch. Lady,” says Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy. “I think Kurt would just die to give her a Christmas makeover. I don’t even know if she’s interested but it’s been pitched.” Besides the potential Boyle guest spot, Murphy also tells EW that there are plans for the cast to release a Christmas album as well (Rob Stringer, Columbia/Epic’s chairman, wouldn’t confirm the Boyle or Christmas album details but did say, “All very interesting ideas. I’ll bring them up at the next development meeting.”).

What do you think about Boyle possibly appearing on Glee, Music Mix-ers? Is that a dream collaboration? Or a disaster pairing?

For more Glee scoop, including details on the huge June 8 season finale and what’s in store for next season, pick up the new issue of EW (with Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester on the cover!) on stands this Friday.

Axl Rose sues former manager over alleged 'sabotage'

axl-roseImage Credit: Photopress PR/Splash NewsThe legal papers Axl Rose filed against former manager Irving Azoff in L.A. on Monday don’t include the exact words “Get In the Ring,” but that’s the general message. You may recall that Azoff, who is also the chairman of ticketing/concert promotion megalith Live Nation Entertainment, sued the Guns N’ Roses singer this spring for $1.87 million in allegedly unpaid fees. Now Rose is striking back with an epic 28-page counter-complaint that essentially paints Azoff as the worst manager in history.

E! Online has the full papers as well as a helpful summary of the accusations Rose makes therein. The countersuit is a highly entertaining read. In one corner stands “one of rock’s all-time great frontmen.” In the other is the allegedly sinister figure to whom said frontman once entrusted his career. Azoff, the complaint claims, “uses his power to punish artists and harm their careers if they do not follow his orders. That is what happened here.” More specifically: “Azoff wanted Guns N’ Roses to fail by sabotaging its touring and record sales, breaking up the current lineup, and forcing Rose into a position where he would have no choice but to reunite with the original members of Guns N’ Roses for a reunion tour.” (That reunion tour, of course, never happened.) Azoff’s attorney did not immediately respond to the Music Mix’s request for comment.

Head over to E! to peruse the whole thing. What do you think of this mess? Who, if anyone, is in the right here?

Joy Division's Ian Curtis: Gone 30 years today

Ian-CurtisImage Credit: Paul Slattery/Retna UK/LandovRock history is littered with the names of superstars who died too soon, many at the peak of their fame. But Lancashire-born Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis is one of the rareified few, like Nick Drake or Arthur Russell, whose modest cult status transformed into something much larger and more influential after his death.

Bands ranging from the Cure and U2 to Radiohead, Interpol, and Bloc Party all owe some musical debt to the bleak, baritoned post-punk sound that Curtis, who took his own life two months shy of his 24th birthday, pioneered with Joy Division.

And countless artists (among them, U2 and Arcade Fire, Fall Out Boy, and of course New Order, the band that sprung from JD’s ashes) have covered the band’s signature song, “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Still, no one else ever quite mastered his onstage trademark, the malfunctioning-robot dance:

Christina Aguilera's Lady Gaga talk: For real, or for show?

lady-gaga-aguileraImage Credit: Paul Bergen/Redferns/Getty Images; Frank Micelotta/Getty ImagesAnother decade, another dance-pop death match? Years after the belly-chained Mouseketeer rumble that was Britney vs. Christina, Aguilera has goosed the media’s thirst for blond-on-blond battles once again with her recent comments to Out magazine on Lady Gaga—but says now, She Was Not Herself That Night (or more accurately, was “taken out of context”).

The Out quote (“’Oh, the newcomer? I think she’s really fun to look at”) is, of course, not Xtina’s first time addressing the topic;  In 2008, she famously claimed not to be familiar with Gaga, or even know whether she was a she at all: “”I’m not quite sure who this person is, to be honest. I don’t know if it is a man or a woman. I just wasn’t sure. I really don’t spend any time on the Internet, so I guess I live a little under a rock in that respect.” READ FULL STORY »

EW Exclusive! Mos Def and Lenny Kravitz perform the Gulf Aid track, 'Ain't My Fault.'

Categories: Lenny Kravitz

We’ve just got our hands on the rather nifty video for “Ain’t My Fault,” the track which Mos Def, Lenny Kravitz, the Preservation Hall Band, Trombone Shorty, and Tim Robbins have recorded to benefit Gulf Aid, the nonprofit established in response to the oil spill off the Louisiana Coast. Mos Def performed the track at a relief concert in New Orleans yesterday—a show that also featured Kravitz, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and Kermit Ruffins, and which will air on FUSE this Saturday night. But you can see the video after the jump.

Take a look, tell us what you think, and, obviously, feel free to make a donation.
