Kimberly Locke on this season's 'American Idol': 'They just need to get back to the basics of singing'

Kimberly-LockeImage Credit: Paul Hebert/Icon SMI/CorbisIn an extended new interview in Out magazine, Kimberly Locke, the third-place finisher on Idol‘s second season, talks about keeping former roommate Clay Aiken’s gay secret (“It wasn’t really a secret to me but it wasn’t really my place to push him in any direction”), her upcoming reality show Making the Curve (“It’s about putting together a plus-sized singing group, which I know my gay boys are going to love”), and working with Randy Jackson’s new “strictly dance” label, Dream Merchant 21 (“I don’t think I knew that Randy was so into dance music!”).

But she saves her sharpest words for her alma mater. On the widely panned current season: “I think that they’re going to have to go back to the raw talent. The other night, on the show, I think everybody except for two people, maybe, played the guitar. I don’t play an instrument. I love people who play instruments — I think it’s great — but American Idol is a singing competition and I think it distracts and it takes away. I think some of them are better musicians than they are singers — if you really want to know the truth about it. When I was on American Idol it was about raw talent; you had a microphone, a microphone stand, a spotlight, and a track. We didn’t even have a band on my season! So, I do think it’s still a great way to find talent. I think they just need to get back to the basics of singing.”

And, with refreshing honesty, on her own struggles as a contestant with the show’s advertorial side: “One of the things I didn’t like about Idol was the Ford commercials. It was like, ‘Come on.’ For a lack of a better word they would whore us out, we did all these commercials for free, they got to use our image and our names. But the thing that upset me the most about it is that it took up so much time in our day. We were already exhausted running around doing press, people pulling us in a thousand directions, now we’ve go to do Coke and Ford and all these different spots for the sponsors. Those things would take, like, an entire day. Some nights we wouldn’t get finished from doing just that until midnight. It’s like, ‘Really?’ And then they’re like, ‘Practice your song in your sleep.’ I was like, ‘Really? Come on.’ So, the Ford commercials were kind of annoying. And, we didn’t get a car. So, go figure.”

So, how do you like them apples? Or would you dub them sour grapes? For all that hustle, would it have hurt Idol to give the kids their own Ford Focus, or even a limited lease on a used Festiva?

Who was that singing with Jay-Z on 'Saturday Night Live'? Meet Bridget Kelly

Categories: Jay-Z, SNL, Television

Bridget-KellyImage Credit: Robb D. Cohen/Retna ltd; NBCJay-Z had some help on the “Empire State of Mind” portion of his Saturday Night Live medley this past weekend. Did you recognize the singer belting out the song’s chorus in place of Alicia Keys? That was Bridget Kelly, 23, a graduate of N.Y.C.’s arts-focused LaGuardia High School and an early signee to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation imprint.

Kelly has filled in on “Empire State of Mind” at numerous recent Jay-Z gigs, including last fall’s “Answer the Call” charity show and this spring’s Coachella festival. Hers is a crucial role: “Empire State of Mind” is a smash that concert attendees expect Jay to play, and it just wouldn’t work without a big, clear voice to sing that hook. Luckily, Kelly has been present and up to the task.

What did you think of Bridget Kelly’s big SNL moment? Are you looking forward to hearing her upcoming debut album?

Andy Rooney's shocking revelation: "I don't know who Lady Gaga is!"

There aren’t many things that cause me to stare in slack-jawed wonder and amazement. But the dyspeptic ramblings of Andy Rooney tend to hit that particular sweet spot.
The last time I checked in with 60 Minutes, the veteran broadcaster was seriously claiming that people didn’t sweep snow like they did in the old days, and last night’s rant was another absolute peach. Rooney kicked off by mentioning that someone had sent him a copy of Billboard magazine—though I can’t imagine who would do such a thing—and that he didn’t recognize any of the popular musical combinations whose latest platters the public are currently purchasing. Okay, so he didn’t actually use the phrase “popular musical combinations,” but he did seem utterly amazed to discover that young people prefer different music to oldsters. I’m guessing this is because the term “Generation Gap” was only popularized in the ’60s, which in Andy Rooney terms is essentially the-day-before-yesterday. Regardless, the resulting ramble was hilarious.
“I don’t know who Lady Gaga is!” Rooney bemoaned at one point. He also professed to have no knowledge of Usher (“I mean, who?”), nor of Justin Bieber. I can only imagine how crushed young Justin will be by the news.
You can see the full clip after the break. Do you find it as funny as I do? And what music would you recommend Andy check out to help him adjust to the 21st century—or, for that matter, the late 20th?

Jay-Z on 'Saturday Night Live': Big highs and a low

Categories: Jay-Z, SNL, Television

snl-jay-zImage Credit: Dana Edelson/NBCDid you catch Saturday Night Live this past weekend? What a display of graceful aging and show-biz longevity! Oh yeah, and Betty White wasn’t bad, either.

I kid because I love. Jay-Z is hardly elderly, but rap is for the most part a young man’s game. His 40 years feel just shy of White’s 88 in hip-hop terms. That makes performances like the first one he gave on this week’s SNL all the more impressive. How is it that a guy who’s already retired and un-retired once, a dude who’s voyaged to the corporate boardroom and back, has so much more stage presence and vitality than any other rapper alive? Brad Paisley is surrounded by 'Water': Q&A with country star whose H20 Tour was nearly swept away by the Nashville flood

brad-paisleyImage Credit: Ethan Miller/ACMA2010/Getty ImagesCountry superstar Brad Paisley was supposed to start gearing up rehearsals for his H20 Tour today in Nashville. Instead, he’s scrambling to replace instruments, amplifiers, and components, and clean what survived after the 100-year flood in Music City washed out the storage and rehearsal facility where he kept his gear.

We got Paisley on the phone late last week to check in on the status of what we’re pretty sure he should start calling “The Gold Doubloons Tour” or something now, and discovered he’s pretty chipper, even in the face of the worst case scenario. And although we are by no means the most important phone call he received last week — o hai, President Obama —  we decided to go ahead and post this anyway.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How are you?
BRAD PAISLEY: I’m hanging in there. I’m all right. We were scheduled to start rehearsals Monday here, and obviously that’s pushed back. We were going to be in the [Bridgestone] arena, which ended up underwater. The top three places where we could set up our gear and rehearse and do it right were the arena, and the Municipal Auditorium, and somewhere else I’m trying to remember — and they all had water. It’s crazy. But they’re loading in today in another building. We’ve got about two-thirds of our gear. We can rent more of what we need. We’ll make it to the first gig. I don’t know if it’ll look exactly like I wanted it to, but it’ll be a show. We lost a lot of stuff over the weekend. My entire guitar rig that I take on the road — they’re all in the SoundCheck [storage] locker. We have yet to get in there but pretty much we know they’re done. [NOTE: Paisley has since posted photos of the swamped gear on his Twitter page.] READ FULL STORY »

Bassist Carlos Dengler leaves Interpol

Categories: Interpol

interpolImage Credit: Jelle WagenaarJust last week, Interpol posted a brand-new song and announced its next album. Today the NYC gloom-rockers have a less fun surprise for fans: Founding bassist Carlos Dengler (pictured, second from right) is leaving the band. ”[Our fourth album is] a heavy record,” band members said in a statement on their official website. “But we’re feeling limber; and we’re going to carry it all around the world for you…Sadly, Carlos will not be joining us.” The statement describes the split as “amicable.”

In addition to holding down the low end on all those Interpol jams, Dengler also became a neo-goth style icon in his own right. (Possibly apocryphal Carlos D comment from 2003: “When I see a badly-dressed guy, it makes me sick.”) Let’s take a moment to remember the weighty basslines, the lopsided hair, and the sharp outfits Dengler brought to Interpol.

Will you miss Carlos Dengler’s presence in the band? Share your favorite Dengler memories in the comments below.

Bobby Brown proposes onstage

Categories: Bobby Brown

etheridge-bobby-brownImage Credit: Earl Gibson III/AP ImagesBobby Brown took his May 7 concert in Jacksonville, Fla. as the perfect opportunity to propose to his manager and girlfriend, Alicia Etheridge, People reports. During the show, Brown invited Etheridge on stage, knelt, and offered her a ring. Sounds like she said “yes”: “The crowd roared its approval as a beaming Etheridge kissed Brown, who remained kneeling,” People‘s report continues. How romantic!

What do you think of this story? Have you seen Bobby Brown in concert lately?

Sleigh Bells to debut entire album on Sirius XM

Categories: Sleigh Bells

Sleigh-BellsImage Credit: Daniel Boczarski/Redferns/Getty ImagesIt’s been a swift ride for Sleigh Bells from unsigned up-and-comers to M.I.A.-approved SXSW standouts to band that Joe Jonas thinks “be rocking it.” And all this before the Brooklyn duo has so much as released an album! As it happens, their full-length debut, Treats, will arrive in stores next Tuesday, May 11. Those who can’t wait that long are advised to tune into Sirius XM satellite radio’s SIRIUS XMU this weekend. DJs at the alt-leaning station (Sirius channel 26/XM channel 43) will be slipping each and every track from Treats into their playlists throughout Saturday and Sunday, giving most of these tunes their very first public airing. Then, from Monday, May 10, through Friday, May 14, Sleigh Bells will co-host SIRIUS XMU every day at 5 P.M. Eastern. They’ll play and introduce every Treats tune there, too.

Are you looking forward to Treats? Will you be tuning in to Sirius XM this weekend?
