After watching her video, and viewing it whilst bearing in mind her previous statements that it is a homage to her admiration of gay love and gay culture. tis is my analysis. I feel that it is a representation of what Gaga herself stated, she wants something form her gay male fans(little monster soldiers) sexually perhps that they cannot provide her. sh wants their love but they are not interested. The reference of the heart could be saying that gay men have stolen her heart, and as a result her romantic future is gone. she has resigned herself to a life of sexual dissatisfaction, hence the nun outfit. Also thre is great reference to the dont ask dont tell policy in the military. Isthis GaGa’s war on homophobia? the war imagery, bowl cuts enforcing nostalig second world war views. Also there is refernec to nazi’s, the costumes and the fact she is in the tower above the men in shorts. similar to hitler and his followes. Afterall GaGa has her own manifesto! The video also tackels issue of gender and sexual identity. The oppression of religion on minorities etc, all in all an interesting and highly successful work of art from one of todays most relevant and talente artists.
Please, she Universal Music Group initially had her play gay clubs. Lady Gaga wants your money. That’s it. If she knew gay men, she would know that they have a much better sense of post modern camp and style than this joke. But you sound like you are 12 years old, so you will soon discover some more sophisticated gay men when you are an adult, I sincerely hope.
What’s wrong with making lots of money? We live in a capitalist country.
Actually, I thought this song was about her fear of heterosexual men. She has stated in interviews that she’s never been successful in a relationship and so she admires her gay friends who seem to be quite content. (The scene the corresponds to this senitment is when she’s looking out of the window down upon the male dancers.) She’s had her heart broken before and that’s why she is holding her battered heart and she’s confused by men because she enjoys their love and sex, but she wants more than a physical relationsihp. Hence, she is dressed as a nun because she has the pure intention of finding true love and not just a physical release. I thought the video was beautiful and doesn’t need any more shock value. Gaga added as much symbolism as was needed to convey her insecurity and her message. Adding extra “shocking” stuff is stupid.
DING DING DING DING!!!!!!!! We have a winner. That is the most on-point description for the theme of the video I have read. Thank you for that. And I can understand her pain. What about that Rob Fusari guy that’s suing her? He wasn’t just her producer, he was also her lover!
Thanks True Blue. I also wanted to add but forgot, that my interpretation adds a great deal of more insight to her lyrics and to the ending when she rots away. The song is really melancholy because she can’t find love.
You kids and your youngness… This is a sort-of mashup of the Abba song, “Alejandro” and “Don’t Turn Around” by Ace of Base. Try to keep up:) I see potential in Gaga more for interesting videos than original music, but she seriously needs to get a more inspired choreographer. Absolutely nothing intriguing in the movement at all. Just rehashed pop dance from 1995. A dozen awesomely in-shape, half-naked men- yet I’m bored. Please fix.
Gaga said this video was about her bravery in gay love. I think the war is based on the Stonewall riots.
Er, sure. So three Latino men walked into a gay bar, Fernando et al. PLEASE. She is the puppet told what to do by Stephen Klein. She said this was about gay love because she wants to retain her fan base. Open your third eye.
Don’t start me with comparing Lady Gaga to Justin beiber. Oh my. Anyways, I think the video is about Nazis. Honestly. Like, Nazi Torture camps, and fights over religion.
She is the female Justin Beiber.
“Nazi Torture camps”?????? Yes, I saw the Concentration Camps alluded to throughout. You insult everyone, especially the victims of those camps, by even thinking such a vacuous puppet would present something like that in a music video. Certainly Stephen Klein would not be involved with such a project.
KiKi, you need to open your mind to divergent interpretations, try to be less patronising and get ove yourself. You are commenting on Entertainment Weekly comment space, hardly a features writer at Rolling Stone.
Lighten up, “Kiki.” Personally, I think the video is a scathing indictment of the Obama Administration’s handling of the whole “British Petroleum” oil crisis. Do something with THAT!
It’s about the “war” between sin and innocence, sacred and profane. GaGa (or, her character)’s innocence has been ravaged by “sex soldiers,” and while she mourns her innocence (it’s clearly herself in the casket, albeit a different “version”), she seems resigned to her new life as one of the “bad guys,” even to the point of accepting this lifestyle with a passionately “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” attitude (swallowing the rosary, ripping off her crusader-esque dress). The puppet strings indicate that there’s something greater than the individual to blame for this trend.
Very good interpretation. Maybe you should be making videos with Gaga.
Love it! But where are her spotted great danes?! This is her first video without them!
Mark is in there! I think the haircut just makes it hard to spot him. Definitely there though.
Once again I’m pretty disappointed in Gaga, this video clearly shows how she is trying to copy Madonna again, she is trying so hard to push the barrier in or as she put it ‘annoy and shocking everyone’ but it lacks a lot of thought and intelligence. Its a summary of Madonna’s justify my love, erotica, die another day and express yourself video all in one, and of course directed by Steven Klein, who has much of his fame from directing Madonna videos. Is the song a Gay anthem ? definitely! The video is ‘over ‘clichéd’ so much so that you cannot really see that this video is not very positive for gay men, apart from calling gay men monsters, Gaga makes homosexuals look like stupid (like they put a bowl over their head and cut around it) satan worshipers and demons. Sorry guys, you would have to watch the video a couple of times to see clearly.
I didn’t quiet get the ammo boob thing, I thought it looked really ridiculous. Its a pitty the song is great and there was a lot of potential. just my point of view.
It amazes me when people complain about the length, content, etc. of Gaga’s videos yet they should know by now that it is not her style to toss out some typical 3:00 video with people dancing in some random club or her oiled-up and writhing on the ground.
With Gaga, you should know to expect the unexpected. Whether you like her music or not, are enthralled by her videos or appalled, she has your attention. It’s indifference that kills an artist, not divisiveness.
Anyway, this video was amazing! I like that it makes me think rather than it be her running away from three guys or something equally mundane. Literal interpretations of songs have become so boring! Thank you Gaga for bringing something interesting to the table! xx
I recall in the mid eighties when Madonna was called the new Monroe, then she came out with the Blond Ambition Tour and was her own creation(with Gaultier’s help), so maybe Gaga will stop all the Madonna rip-offs and do her own thing.
I hope so too.
Obvious Three Stooges reference… c’mon!
I heard Moe’s estate is planning on filing a lawsuit.
LOVE IT! *enough said*
Too bad that the song is mediocre. It has not real arc or climax and the affected accent in the beginning is lame. The video, however, is interesting and sexy. A bit too long, especially when it simply repeats the aforementioned mediocrity over cool images. I wish she would have interspersed some silence or intriguing dialogue.
which one was Alejandro and how did Roberto play into this? did any one one of those dancers look Latino? except maybe the one who anchored his chin strap with his bottom lip
look latino? latino is not a race and they can be any race so how are they suppose to look?
Hispanic is a race then? *shrugs*
One cheer for capitalism.
I saw Gaga in this video and only maybe a small % of Madonna. There are things Gaga has created that Madonna never done before so she isn’t always copying her imo Lady Gaga is here to stay regardless.
