Katy Perry indulges her sweet tooth in 'California Gurls' video: Watch here!

The video for Katy Perry’s smash “California Gurls” is out, and it’s a Technicolor Teenage Dream all right — or, if you happen to be a dentist, more like a teenage nightmare. The Mathew Cullen-directed clip finds Perry and Snoop Dogg cavorting through a sugary heaven populated by writhing candy canes, surly gummy bears, hapless ginger bread men, melting popsicle dudes, and more. All those animated desserts inspire some matching fashion choices for Perry, including a dress made of candy buttons, another outfit involving strategically placed whipped cream canisters, and several shots in which she lounges on a cotton-candy cloud wearing nothing much besides a silver wig.

It’s a fun clip that fans of Perry’s breezy West Coast anthem are sure to love. Check it out after the jump and let us know how you like the “California Gurls” video — and how it measures up to the latest work of Lady Gaga, with whom Perry is definitely not feuding.

Candyfornia is a Kids Game? Why Can’t I find it online?

Fun–but not great–music video, but clearly the Song of Summer 2010. You have to give her credit. “I Kissed a Girl” was Song of Summer 2008.

  • avenger

Honestly, I kinda liked this video. Its a fun theme and different. Its a fun, light song and the video fits. Definitely an A.

  • Jeff

Unlike some other artists, Katy Perry shows that music videos don’t need to be so ridiculously serious. This is fun music at it’s best! Great job Katy

  • aves

Its definitely fun and kind of fluffy but it’s also wicked stupid. I like it. I think it fits the song well.

    fergalicious 2010

I’m actually shocked that I watched the entire video and was entertained. It was cute nothing groundbreaking but matched the playful mood of the song.

I think it’s kinda obvious that Lady Gaga’s Alejandro video reflects New York: dark, dreary and depressing. You can see why Lady Gaga takes herself way too seriously. On the other hand, Katy Perry’s California Gurls video is light, breezy and cheerful. Completely the opposite of Alejandro. Katy Perry knows how to have FUN. I don’t care for either songs, but I liked Perry’s video more. It seemed just right for the summertime. (Lady Gaga’s video would’ve been more suited in the fall/winter.)

    • Iceis

agree ! this video/song is soo much fun !

    • Stephanie

Yup. I like LG better than Katy but Katy knows one thing that LG doesn’t seem to get-a summery-sounding pop song merits a fun, summery video.

  • Bee

stupid video that makes little sense and has even less to do with the song

    • Iceis

it’s called adding a twist to it and making it fun. not everything has to be serious. get a sense of humor.

    • Conalae

Well, if you think about it, it has a lot to do with the song. But I’ll leave you to your trolling ways. :)

  • Iceis

LOVE THE VIDEO AND SONGG !! SONG OF THE SUMMER 2010 !

  • Dream_Monster

I thought the video was cheap and unoriginal. Basically, stupid. Katy Perry has not artistic intelligence. I also thing the song itself is not so great.

    • Conalae

Unoriginal? How? Rather than do the obvious and copy hundreds of other music videos and dance on the beach, she put a twist on it, created an entire metaphoric world… Made a Much better video than what it could’ve been.

      • lorin

Using candy was just an excuse to get herself naked. The song was really annoying with the “ohohohoh” part.

  • Susie

Paul, Alejandro has zero to do with New York City and is in no way a reflection of it.

  • The Daw

I don’t understand — the obvious move here was for a video on the beach in California. I don’t know how anything else was even an option.

    • Conalae

Because that would be “even more” unoriginal and such than this… (Even though this isn’t unoriginal, So what if there is one other music video in Candyland? There are hundreds set on a beach)

Katy helps with Music Videos and this is her personality coming through, fun and stuff.. Also, it’s comparing California to Candyland, someplace most people would want to go to and never ever leave. *Shrug*

      Metaphors.
