Snoop Dogg barred from Dutch festival

snoop-doggImage Credit: Christopher Polk/Getty ImagesSnoop Dogg has been banned from headlining a June 27 festival in the Dutch city of the Hague, Reuters reports. Apparently the Hague’s mayor and law enforcement officers demanded that Snoop be removed from the bill “in order to be able to guarantee the open and friendly character and free admission of Parkpop.”

You can almost see Reuters’ reporter grinning as he calls Big Snoop “a frequent visitor to the Netherlands and aficionado of its readily available marijuana.” Yes, there’s a certain amount of irony in rap’s most famous pothead being turned away from the land of semi-legal weed. But let’s get serious for a second: What, exactly, are the Hague’s bureaucrats trying to communicate with that “open and friendly character” line? Snoop Dogg is one of the most open and friendly characters in all of pop culture these days! He’s just about the cuddliest gangsta on the face of the planet. The man parties in Candyland with Katy Perry, for goodness’ sake. Reuters links this turn of events to Snoop’s trouble getting into the U.K. and Australia due to various criminal cases, but if that’s the issue, why didn’t the Hague cite that reason — and why has Snoop been allowed to perform so often in the Netherlands before? It doesn’t really add up.

Snoop Dogg’s reps have not responded to EW’s request for comment. Snoop Dogg’s camp responded with a statement that you can read after the jump. What do you think of this story?

UPDATE: “Snoop Dogg is astonished by the decision of the Mayor of The Hague, a town in the south of Holland, to not allow him to perform at the free festival, Parkpop,” reps for the rapper said in a statement. “There’s been much speculation that, given the enormous response by Snoop’s fans to the free festival, the local authorities would not be able to provide sufficient security. Mojo, the largest concert promoter in Holland says, ‘We have never had any issues with Snoop, who has played magnificent shows at many of the festivals we promote such as Lowlands, North Sea Jazz and at several other promoted shows by Mojo.’  Snoop is a mainstay at music festivals all over the world and has performed at all of these without incident. Snoop Dogg performances have always been the epitome of ‘open and friendly,’ which has been proven countless times, including recent festivals such as Live 8, Oxegen Festival, and Lollapalooza — among many others. Snoop Dogg is scheduled for a string of other performances in June for his fans in Holland.”

The Dutch have severe race problems. I think it’s because they think he will attract and African crowd..

    • Karin

okay that’s just not true! we do not have race problems, race is not the issue in this country religion is becoming a bigger issue for some though, what the elections of june 9th showed was that lots of people are afraid of what they don’t know and certain rightwinged politicians played on that feeling, but it’s not africans they are afraid of.
however what the hague is afraid of is probably related to the riots that happened at a free beach festival last year, where the police had to take action and several people were shot.

Ask Dutch soccer players CLarence Seedorf and Edgar David’s if there are race problems in The Netherlands. They were kept off teh national team toward the mid 2000’s due to their race.

      • Karin

wow vince you live in the past then, cause it’s 2010 now not 2000. and for the record in the 1999/2000 season clarence seedorf only played 10 games for his club and edgar davids is a egocentric player who often insulted the coaches. and i guess you haven’t seen the dutch national team at this years world cup cause there are several players with darker skin playing, so where exactly is the race issue? oh and yeah i’m dutch living in amsterdam

sooo true.. plus not very friendly to black americans … so unlike the dutch in the 80’s .. what happened in between?

The Dutch can’t deal with Snoop right now, they’re too busy recovering from all the effort they put into the Joran van der Sloot investigation.

      • Holly

        Oh no he dih-int! :)

  • nodnarb

Marijuana is not legalized in the Netherlands. I realize this is a common misconception, but you would think an actual journalist would get this right.

Oh wow, seeing these comment, the real racists live in the good ol’ US of A! And Vince, I think you are referring to Euro 96 which had more to do with clashing egos than anything else. But you wouldn’t know that because you’ve smoked so much pot your brains have shrunk to the size of a shrimp’s. P.S.: Learn how to spell!

Snoop is a criminal a-hole who should be rotting in jail right now. Finally the Dutch get it right.

      • Allison

        Little harsh, don’t ya think?

  • Mira

Of course the Dutch are racists. But no more and no less than any other nation of people.

  • Jed

He was told not to distribute that grass around and look what happened.

Actually, the decision has not so much to do with Snoop Dogg himself as with the local and national politics in the Netherlands, where last year a free beach festival ended in clashes with police and one partygoer shot dead and police officers shooting basically at point blank range into a crowd that was rushing them.
Since that time no mayor wants to take the chance that anything might go wrong since that would basically be the end of their career.
And hes not banned from entering the Netherlands or The Hague, it’s just that if the organisation does decide to keep him on billing they will revoke the permit for the festival.

  • Greedysoul

Racism is not it, there are many other black artists performing. The Hague city gov’t is afraid of gang fights during the festival, that’s why they don’t want Snoop to perform. It’s understandable because when that happened at Hoek van Holland, people got killed in the fights. Snoop can still perform at secure venues in the Netherlands, but this is an open festival with a large audience and very few police force so it’s an understandable decision.

  • Aniel

Snoop dog was refused because it will attract the wrong kind of people? I read that. So then you know what kind of people are here living besides dutch racist.
