Adam Lambert's Glam Nation Tour in NYC: Fans show a whole lotta love

adam-lambertImage Credit: Joe Kohen/WireImage.comAdam Lambert threw a party last night in New York City, and everyone was invited.

Take, for example, the middle-aged woman in the audience who’d traveled all the way from Auckland, New Zealand, to experience the Glam Nation tour alongside fellow female fans from around the globe whom she’d met on Internet message boards. And in a similar vein, while the audience for the first of Lambert’s two Manhattan concerts featured a mix of ages, races, and genders, a cursory glance around the Nokia Theatre revealed that the American Idol season 8 runner-up is indubitably connecting with women of a certain age.

Superficially, it’s a puzzling phenomenon: Openly gay male rocker drawing droves of adoring thirty- to fifty-something ladies who lazy marketing execs might expect to spend their Tuesday evenings sipping white-wine spritzers and listening to their local Lite-FM stations? But for those lucky enough to experience Lambert’s raucous 14-song set, the phenomenon makes perfect sense: If there’s any truth to the stereotype that gay men throw the best parties, Adam’s Glam Nation soiree is Exhibit A. And as a misfit toy himself — an artist whose Euro-Goth brand of vocal adrenaline and openness about his sexual orientation make his radio aspirations a protracted uphill battle — Adam’s fills his concert with a winking, conspiratorial giddiness that makes his fans feel like he’s singing directly to them. One of the biggest roars from the crowd, in fact, came during Adam’s performance of his hit single “Whataya Want from Me,” right after the line, “It’s me, I’m a freak. But thanks for loving me, ’cause you’re doing it perfectly.”

That kind of positive back-and-forth coursed through the entire Glam Nation set, with Lambert alternately serving as playfully sexy ringleader, Oprah-esque relationship adviser, and jaw-dropping vocal contortionist (albeit one who tends to dress in heavy tapestry fabrics that look like they might have been used to upholster Cher’s couches during her Gothic period). After a particularly devastating rendition of his ballad “Soaked,” Adam laughed about going “dark with a twist,” then, pointing to his chest, he philosophized about the struggle to overcome past hurts and find true love. “You chase your tail to enough bars and then realize the answer is in here.” Later, after ripping his way through the dance-driven current single “If I Had You,” Adam obscenely wagged his tongue and giggled “I love New York!”

The man also loves his most loyal Glamberts, as evidenced by his decision to open the show with a one-two punch of “Voodoo” (which appeared only on Adam’s remix EP) and “Down the Rabbit Hole” (a bonus track that came with iTunes pre-orders of his For Your Entertainment disc), followed by the Middle Eastern-flavored “Ring of Fire” that he first introduced during Country Week on Idol.

Adam then tackled what are arguably the two most commercially viable tracks off his album — the Lady Gaga-penned “Fever” and the Ryan Tedder number “Sleepwalker” — and, not all that surprisingly, these live renditions proved tighter and cleaner than probably half of his Auto-Tuned radio competitors.

After that, the laser-light show and backup dancers went quiet, and the stripped-down portion of the show kicked in for “Whataya Want from Me,” “Soaked,” and “Aftermath,” giving Adam a chance to show off what he’s famous for: That voice. The last of these tracks, a self-empowerment ballad that could easily serve as a National Coming Out Day anthem, benefited most from the sparse rearrangement, achieving depth and nuance that are largely absent from the recorded version.

The party returned to full force — and Adam got his pop-and-lock on — for the beautifully campy “Sure Fire Winners,” and the dance reverie extended through “Strut” (where a paisley skull inexplicably emerged as a backdrop), “Music Again,” and “If I Had You,” Adam’s treatise on the trappings of fame being meaningless without the secret ingredient of love. That sentiment might be too pat by half, but the crowd consumed like lemonade on a scorching summer day.

And just in case some of his Idol devotees came to see him without first sampling his debut disc, Adam returned for an encore of two songs he performed on Fox’s reality juggernaut:  “Mad World” got a jangly rearrangement that unfortunately erased the haunting drama of his Idol version. Then, Adam slowed down the blast of sexual energy that is  “Whole Lotta Love” and turned it into a howling, bass-heavy meditation that bordered on Tantric. Such a new-age twist might be blasphemy to Led Zeppelin purists, and it may have been unexpectedly mellow for a closing number, but the way the audience shrieked its approval, a successful concert climax was experienced by most.

allison-iraheta-orianthiImage Credit: Joe Kohen/WireImage.comAs for Glam Nation’s opening acts, Adam’s Idol contemporary Allison Iraheta got the party started with a spectacular set that almost forced me to call 911, seeing how its compact 20-minute length robbed me of the necessary time to appreciate the red-headed teenager’s ridiculous vocal talents. Propulsive set opener “Holiday” found Iraheta bounding across the stage with a carefree confidence she never quite achieved during her Idol run; it’s clear that she’s much more at home surrounded by her band than she was with four reality-TV judges ready to pass judgment on her clothing, her demeanor, and her personality. A brief sampling of the devastating ballad “Scars” led into a terrific take on current single “Don’t Waste the Pretty” that featured muscular guest work by guitar goddess Orianthi (who popped in for one song only). The set-closing cover of “Heartbreaker,” meanwhile, turned out to be an inspired choice for an 18-year-old with the soul of someone quite probably three times that age.

Following Iraheta, Orianthi was a bit of a letdown. The “According to You” singer has a stilted stage demeanor that brightens only when she stops singing and focuses on her exceptional guitar skills. Aside from those interludes, though, one must decide whether to fixate on Orianthi’s unremarkable ditties (the rote “Shut Up and Kiss Me,” the Sarah McLachlan-lite “Courage”) or the fact that her bangs failed to move a centimeter through the duration of her nine-song set. The lone highlight of Orianthi’s competent but sleepy act was was the romping “Think Like a Man,” an obvious choice for the Australian diva’s next single.

He’s a good peformer, but I hate his acoustic version of “Whole Lotta Love”. Dude, It’s a classic. It just sound bad.

    • hersheydog

Dude – check out your facts – Plant himself did an acoustic version.

      • alicia

there is a “web//site” named “black // white / Cupid” for dating or relationship, black or white singles can go there to find something sexy or beauty online !!!! ;) ;)

    • jay

LMAO. Just this guy never fails to make me laugh. I’m sure next year he’ll be playing arenas, his album is flying off the charts, he’s a younger fatter untalented version of boy george.

      • HannaB

Fatter, untalented? Have you actually listened to him and watched him perform? He couldn’t be any slimmer than he is right now and remain healthy! And anyone who says he’s untalented completely invalidates anything else they have to say. Not one music critic or aficionado has denied his remarkable talent. I expect him to be at the top of the charts for a long time.

      • Jerryw

@jay…you have the wrong guy..you must be thinking of Chris Allan..he is already playing at parks…go check him out..you won’t need to take a sleep aide tonight…

      • Vada

JerryW, this review is about Adamn Lamebrat. Try to stay focused.

      • Cindy

jay- who were you looking at and listening to because it wasn’t Adam Lambert. Wow really?

      • Chloe

anyone who says he is fat and untalented has obviously not seen him or listened to him, he is so far from fat and that voice – AMAZING

      • Jae

Jay is obviously a troll and everyone is entitled to an opinion. Let’s not feed him though. :)

      • Leigh

Fat in all the right places, bub.

      • Terry Salas

Adam’s album isn’t at the top of the charts, (And hasn’t even gone platinum) and his only song to become an actual radio hit peaked at # 10 (What Do You Want From Me) after 2 singles flopped. His current single, If I Had You, peaked at # 24 and it’s already out of the HOT 100 entrely

Really, the hype is monstrously disproportional to his actual chart success

      • ianaleah

Top 100 -all genres included – fr 29 straight weeks though and still at 56 on itunes – that silly Jay is SUCCESS unlike loser Danny G and mediocre singer Kris A -and your are here cuz you are obeessed about Adam’s success and he is headlining a successful 70 city tour and then continues his tour in Europe -That kiddo is a successful artist and Adam is just getting started. By the way, keep spending your time and energy reading and commenting about Adam cuz every click adds to his success no matter what you say – it is the number of clicks that count and Adam wins !!!! Ha !

      • Mary

Vada you are not funny, you bitter old, stinky, cow!!

      • Anita

Fatter? Untalented? Obviously you weren’t at the concerts. Adam has almost lost too much weight for his height. He is thin. As for untalented, he can sing any genre of music and all the cords on the guitar.

      • Amy

Jay, better get some drugs into your system boy! You are seeing something totally different here!

      • traci

Are you acoustically challenged?Adam has skills that very few can or have EVER been capable of.I loved Boy George but Adam is in his OWN league.

    • jay

He’s a fatter more female version of Miley! LOL!

      • debbie

Jay are you blind, deaf and stupid? It’s plain that you don’t like Adam and that’s your preference, but why would you take the energy to even comment on someone you clearly do not like? No life perhaps!!

      • Stormy

Just saw him live and at 6’1″ he can’t weigh more than 180 lbs. So make that popping sound and get your head out of your butt.

      • guest

        Oooh a troll!
Reading EW articles is just half the fun without some deranged troll whoring for attention.

      • riskylady

I can safely say that Adam is 1,000 times more beautiful than Miley, more talented (he can actually sing), and SEXIER by far to all his female fans of ALL ages.

      • Cathy

Let me see…Jay is a 40 year old man that lives in his mother’s basement and had never achieved anything in his life. People don’t be mean. This man needs sympathy for his pathetic life.

      • TJ

Jay just loves to yank everyones chain, he has nothing better to do with his pock marked stinky self… those the ridicule others are so afraid that is in themselves, so Jay buddy you just showed the world what you really are. HUMAN FAIL, sucks to be you dude.

      • Kam

Cathy – you are right! So Jay, I’m so sorry you are who you are…a homophobic bastard! I just hope you become better than that…perhaps a homobastard!

      • Amalia

For Jay and all other trolls!

ADAM IS DOING BETTER BY THE DAY! He has over 40 SOLD-OUT concerts in north America (USA and Canada) is loved and appreciated in Europe, Asia, Australia, South Africa, New Zeeland, etc—Concerts on many continents are under negotiation right now. -Basically at this time he has no time availabilities considering the demands for his concerts………. People are standing on line for more than 24 hours before his concerts (slipping out doors) !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hey you negative people! Are you nuts? Mentally retarded? I am sure this is not the case..You are just plain NEGATIVE (very frustrated because of a reason unknown to us)!

Therefore… GET A PERSONAL LIFE AND SMILE!!! Everything will be better for you on all levels.

        JUST TRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • ianaleah

We all can see for ourselves what a hottie he is, and hear for ourselves why he is praised for his talent. Adam rules you that is why you are here in the first place with the rest of us, but we have fun because we spend time on who we do like and you spend your time on what your don’t like. We win you lose.

      • terry

Jay is spending time reading about Adam because Jay is a losing competitor and sick with jealousy or why bother with an artist you don’t like – that would be a stupid waste of time.

      • Myla

No fat on this photo (remove spaces).

    • Sally in Chicago

To the Writer: Liberace also attracted the “older” women…they loved him and flocked to his shows….besides the gay guys.

      • Kelly

To Sally. He doesn’t attract 30-50 year old women because he’s gay. Get a clue. It’s because his music is a throwback to the 70′s and 80′s rock music which we grew up with, because he has a great rock voice and great rock wail, and because he’s a tall, dark, charismatic and very attractive young man. Period. I don’t typically find gay men attractive but he is hot. Sorry to burst your bubble. And , by the way (closet Kris fan), I don’t give a crap where you live.

      • me

I so agree with Kelly, he does remind me of Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant. The voice is such a throwback and it takes me back. I don’t care who he sleeps with as long as he keeps on singing.

      • Elizabeth

Adam’s stunning American Idol performances showcased his unique voice, showmanship, charisma, and ability to “emote” a song. His talent and ability to do so much, so well, gained him an unusually broad fan base. Not just teeny bopers or rockers, or just one demographic or age group.

I am 70, and I am drawn to Adam’s voice and personality. So much about him reminds me of Elvis. If he doesn’t turn into a Boy George or Lady Ga Ga clone, Adam can stand in time with historical musical greats. His challenge will be to keep his broad base of fans, and not get too “performance crazy”. I love his stripped down performances where his excellent voice soars…

    • a

That acoustic WLL is a fan favourite… he “tested” it on a concert before and the fans loved it so he keeps doing it… plus, Adam looks like he has a blast perfoming it. And it’s hot.
BTW Led Z personally gave Adam permission to use the song and it’s no secret they don’t just allow anyone to sing their songs… so I guess they like Adam and the way he sings it enough to allow him to sing it on his tour.

    • riskylady

Whole Lotta Love was written as an R&B song by Willie Dixon of “Muddy Waters” and later lifted by Zeppelin. They had to settle a lawsuit and now credit him.

    • Skylar

Wrong I love the slow grind of Adam’;s stripped down WWL. It is so sexy and molten hot.

    • Leigh

No such thing as a “classic” in music – just what works. And, damn, this worked overtime.

    • Mamo

Strongly disagree. I have been lucky enough to see both Led Zepp Plant’s WWL, Adam’s rock version and last night’s slow grind version performed live. It’s official: Adam now owns WWL with his slow boil version. Last night was epic.

      • Tahaa

Mamo.. I agree I saw the “STAIR SEXXXX” In Milwaukee 4th row and I am still having MULTIPLES and tingling way down inside!! Adam OWNS every song he sings.. no one can go toe to toe w/ Adam and sing.. he is best singer I have ever heard..AND THE SEXXXIEST HOTTEST MOST DESIRABLE ALL MAN ALIVE.. we don’t think gay when we Think Adam Lambert we just THINK SEXX SEXXX SEXXXX WITH HIM OK!!.. And we WOMEN of ALL ages LOVE HIM because of that…Men take lessons from Adam if yu want to turn a women on… He has it all, and WE LOVE IT AND HIM!!

    • CarolLeslie

Whole Lotta Love began circa late 1950′s as a guitar driven slow burn blues number by Muddy Waters titled You Need Love. Adam’s acoustic version takes it back to its blues roots, but with flawless vocals and a brilliant display of musicianship by Adam as well as his entire band. As both an Adam fan and a lover of the oldest original Delta blues traditions I was blown away when I saw the Fantasy Springs video. I’ve loved Adam since Ring of Fire, but the back to blues version of WLL gave me a new appreciation of his talent as a musician as well as a singer.

    • JLM

Saw Adam at Fantasy Springs and fell madly in love. Adam is a remarkable performer and there is no one that touches him vocally (especially no male). Adam’s voice is simply a gift from out of this world.

    • Jet

Adam’s accoustic version of WLL is beyond words – HOT!! He embibes that song and it is phenomenal to watch.

    • marcy

That’s ok, but I love it. It’s all okay, we are not clones.

    • terry

I love Robert Plant, and I love Adam Lambert, so I have double the fun.

    • gah/rph

Michael~ Why did this review focus on your perception of Adam’s fans and the fact that he’s gay rather than his AMAZING performance? MTV’s Jim Cantiello’s excellent review was all about the music as it should be.

    • Lily

I like the accoustic Whole Lotta Love but I do prefer the more rockier version that he did in the e.g. Washington concert

  • daisyj

Geez, women in their thirties are “of a certain age” now? Guess I’d better go get myself a lite-rock CD and a wine spritzer and call it a day.

(Still, glad to hear that Adam puts on a good show– regardless of what you thought of him on Idol that should come as no surprise.)

    • Michael Slezak

No offense intended, DaisyJ, especially not from a guy who’s aged out of the advertiser-craved 18-34 demographic himself! ;)

      • daisyj

Yah, I’m just giving you a hard time. It’s hell getting old(er than the world’s key marketing demos).

      • Lisa

Ageism is problem people. It’s not cool. Can’t it just be overlooked and people be people? I don’t see this reviewer pointing out the other demographics which were obviously visible in the crowd, just the “old lady” demographic. It seems to be in vogue lately to point that out amongst media like OMG they’re over 30 why aren’t they dead?

Not just here, but it’s generally becoming more and more pervasive across the board in media reviews of various types products. I don’t know why.

Anyway, having attended plenty of other concerts, including a couple of Idols, I can say that Adam’s shows truly draw a very eclectic audience and given the message he’s trying to portray, I think actually commenting on the fact that he seems to be succeeding would have been a much more observant commentary by this journalist, on both society and Adam’s business sensibility.

      • shalotte

So what was the point of the insulting “white wine spritzer & Lite FM” bs then? When your lead on a concert review is about what looks like your anxiety at sharing the floor with women over twenty-something, it’s hard not to see that as offensive. Does it shock you to see guys over thirty at the show, too? Shouldn’t they be listening to Billy Joel and drinking brews at a sports bar? We’re none of us our parents, dude.

      • carrie

And yet, I was offended. And I am usually a supporter of you Michael. I’ve heard there were lots of teens and 20-somethings there but you seem to be mocking the older women who dare to come out of house to see a concert. You insult them and you trivialize Adam’s appeal.

      • aislinn

Oh, lighten up people! As one of those women(51 here) who attended Adam’s first concert and has plans for more, there were a lot of us women in the age demographic mentioned. That’s not to say that there wasn’t a wide range of folks in the audience – I saw young pre-teens, guys Adam’s age, folks of all shapes, ages, and races. Michael said “lazy marketing execs” might peg us that way, not that he did.
Adam’s amazing vocal ability and massive charisma on stage make his shows a real winner! I agree with Michael’s take on both Allison and Orianthi as well – Allison was fantastic, but Orianthi’s better off sticking to her impressive guitar playing, preferably in someone else’s band.

      • mars

Are you (a die-hard AI fan) really trying to pretend that you weren’t aware that the American Idol median viewer age is over 40 and likely female? Really?!

I am not in that demographic yet and I would LOVE to see Adam Lambert in concert. If only I could get my hands on some tickets for the sold out shows! :(

      • MultiPass

I was gonna call you on that too, Michael. As a man of a certain age and a …ahem.. confirmed bachelor, I can only pretend I didn’t read it. BTW, love your pimping of Alison. She is the balls.

      • Alli

Thanks. As a 33 yr old woman, I didn’t know I was a 2nd class citizen until I read this. Thanks for telling us what is expected of ‘women of a certain age’.

Also why was so much of the review focused on the audience type? I can understand talking about audience size…but that’s not what you did.

You might not have intended to offend, but you did.

      • Kelly

Slezak likes to insult Lambert. Period. This is his usual passive aggressive anti Lambert article. Today the theme is that only middle aged women like him and it must be because he is gay and knows how to put on a show. WTF???

      • my opinion only

Oh please. He pointed it out, like others before him, because it is unusual to have a big number of women over 30 at a pop concert. And he was MOCKING the expectations of MARKETERS for “women of a certain age”, not agreeing with it. Reading comprehension people.

      • ger

Apparently white wine spritzers make you lose your sense of humour.

      • Jet

Rickey commented in his review thata the audiance was at least 1/3 gay males and that there were a ton of young women, not just older. He said the crowd was hugely diverse.

      • terry

(look up fraudulant use of another’s name and wise up fast ) Adam is headlining a successful 70 city tour with mostly all sold out already and then he takes the tour to Europe. He is the first AI contestant to headline a tour first season out and so fans of others can (hello) be jealous and petty, and use energy clicking onto Adam blogs. That of course, since it is a numbers game, makes it the reason for another Adam blog to be posted. Whether a commentor likes or dislikes Adam makes no difference, it is the number of comments that matter. Adam is winner because of everyone of us -pro or con !!!!!

      • Blondiegrrl

Regarding “My Opinion Only” comments above: THANK YOU. I’m glad someone else got it.

      • Justathought

Speaking of demographics, didn’t I read recently that the over 40 crowd buy a majority of the albums sold?

    • Suzette

LOL, at 50, I better open up the coffin and dust myself off for the night!

      • tmd

LOL … at age 73 … I was sitting in the ‘bone yard’ where all good aging elephants go to await their demise … but LO! & Behold! … a Glittery Alien from Planet Fierce … changed all that!!! LONG LIVE ROCK & ROLL!!!

      • Amy

I saw at least 500 teens at the concert!!! There were more teenagers there than soccer moms or grannies!!! WTF does AGE have to do with being a fan???

    • Stacy E

Man I was thinking the same thing! Don’t lump the 30 year olds with the 50 year olds! Those are 2 different generations!

    • Skylar

LOL Daisey, I am older than you and I do not care for wine spritzers or lite anything.

Stacy yes we may be different generations but heart and soul is what connects and that is what I find as the commonality in Adam’s fanbase. As Adam says regardless of age, gender, sexuality, race, creed or color we can all party together and enjoy music and fun and campiness.

      • daisyj

I’m fairly sure the only people who actually like wine spritzers are 15-year-olds trying to get drunk at family barbecues. Seriously, do they even make those things anymore?

(On a fun related note: There’s a bar near me where one chalkboard has all their wines by the glass, another has the beers and another has the sodas, sparkling water, non-alc beers. . . and the white zinfandel. Ah, California.)

    • sara

I went to Adam’s concert tonight in NYC. I’m in my 20s and most people around me were in their teens or 20s. Good mix of men, women and all ages. Some of the outfits, on the other hand, I will not comment on.

      • mj

@ sara did you like adam’s performance though?i’ve been hearin some great reviews about his concerts so far i’m wonderin how accurate they are

  • Molly

Fantastic review! I saw him in Toronto and was blown away, but I suspect the crowd and the atmosphere made this show even better. Good thing he’ll be touring and making music for years to come–I’ll have plenty of chances to see him again!

  • Barry

14 songs for him & only 20 minutes for her? Man, what a waste of money. Old rockers like the Stones give you a good 3 hours of songs.

    • leanne

..plus 40 minutes for Orianti… plus set changes between performers, puts the total show at 3+ hours. Besides, the tickets are cheap. He could be charging much more. I forked out $300 to see U2 (don’t get me started!) and only $35 for Adam. Based on pure vocal talent and heart, it should be the other way around.

      • Barry

I agree…U2 suxs. The Stones however are the criteria by which all other rockers are judged. They are the greatest rock & roll band in the world!!!

    • Nina

Unfortunately, the man is doing over 70 dates in rapid succession, and he kills with his spectacular voice every single night. To do that, the sets have to be shorter. Hopefully on the next tour he’ll do fewer shows but longer sets.

      • ianaleah

Right, also after his 2nd album, like for all the past artists did. The Beatles for the first year or so never did more than a 20 minute concert and yes, that is a face :) Adam just is doing so well that it attracks jealous trolls, and that proves he is doing very well.

    • queenrosered

Really Barry? You compare this vocal “Stradivarius” that is Adam’s instrument to the Stones? LOL! That…is a hoot!(and a bit ignorant, IMO)
On his BEST day, in his HEYDAY, Jagger couldn’t belt “Satisfaction” anywhere CLOSE to the way Adam can.
God gave Adam a vocal “gift” for real. And thank God, he knows how to take care of that gift.
He doesn’t lip-sync and doesn’t use any fake audio enhancement. That is extremely rare nowadays, especially live! I’m with Nina…in the future, larger venues, less dates, longer sets. But in the meantime, I am smart enough to know that if a musician smashes his guitar or drums, there are plenty more where that came from. But that rare Stradivarius is priceless and irreplaceable and should be protected as such. Have some respect and some good taste please.

      • Stormy

        Absolutely. Adam is millennium Elvis!

      • Barry

Mick doesn’t lipsynch plus you get 3 hours of classic music. Lets get together 45 years from now & see if Lambert is still around like Mick is.

      • ali

@Barry, adam lambert doesn’t lip sync. Therefore, now we know that you didn’t even see the show but are bi!ching about it.

      • queenrosered

Barry? “Mick doesn’t lip sync”….LOL! I saw the Stones live, twice in their prime and Mick sings like balls!Cannot carry a tune.He is one that SHOULD lip sync!LOL!
Adam NEVER “fakes” a note and will be singing for MANY years to come. But why am I even bothering to explain the difference to a knuckle-dragging Neanderthal who obviously doesn’t know the difference between “quality” and “quantity”.
Real vocal aficionados would rather hear 1 hour of the “Stradivarius”(Adam) than 3 hours of that out-of-tune “fiddle” that is Mick.

LOL Mick Jagger got famous for sticking his d*ck into anything that wouldn’t run for the hills fast enough.
His voice has never been any better thatn just mediocre. And they still tour with basically the same material and show they used 30 years ago.

      • Jen

        Including David Bowie.

    • factcheck

And they don’t do >70 shows back to back and they don’t “sing” and challenging material. Kelly Clarkson’s 2010 tour did about 20 songs but she only had around 30 shows. So stop making generalizations.

    • factcheck

The Rolling Stones 2007 summer Euro tour was only 30 shows and the set list was 19 songs-2 hours. The tickets were over twice the price of Adam’s. Your argument is invalid as is your silliness comparing the guy’s first tour ever to the freaking Rolling Stones.

    • Mary

This is his first tour. I am sure Adam will change what needs changing. Of course only 20 minutes for her, this is Adam’s tour after all!!! How stupid are you?

    • traci

Barry,in regard to Adam’s nonlengthy stage performance,I’m sure he will perform longer as his career progresses.Yes,the Stones may give ya 3hrs of tunes but, come on, they have had 40+ yrs to compile their playlist…hello!!!

  • rebecca

    Great review Slezak! I agree!

  • trashtvlover

SADLY, he is coming to AC this weekend and i am moving into a new house so have to skip it, boo! will def try and catch him on the next go round, saw him on the idol tour and loved him!

    • Barry

You sure you don’t mean Asbury Park. It is Pride Weekend ya know.

      • ali

Ahhhh. So Barry’s a homophobe, too.

      • tmd

@Barry … Ooops! Now you’ve done it! Now everybody knows WHAT you are … so NO more responses to Barry … people!!!

      • Barry

I see that you 2 clowns made sure that I couldn’t reply to you. He’s just redoing Boy George; another singer who is way better than him.

      • Mary

Barry you are so funny to even take seriously! Thanks for the laugh idiot!

  • Nina

After watching all the vids taken at last night’s phenomenal show the four more weeks we have to wait to see him in California just got exponentially more painful. BRING. IT. ON!

    • Shana

I can’t wait to see him in California either. Orange County for my birthday… I am so excited!

  • Lauren

Adam’s Glam Nation tour is amazing, and something that you have to see live to fully understand it. If you don’t have tickets – GET SOME. It will be more than worth it.

    • AQLP

Lauren I DO understand :-) For example… I got one ticket. For one show. LOVED it beyond my wildest! I now have tix for 9 more

  • momma bear

Barry — old rockers like the stones have 30 years and a truckload of material to perform for 3 hours…i don’t think the stones were doing 3 hour shows when they were on album number one and performing in small-mid-sized venues

    • Mrs.P

I saw the Stones in the mid 60′s at an amusement park in Utah and the charge was 5 bucks. They sang for like 45 minutes to an audience of 500. I think it was their first US tour.

    • Cathy

I saw the Beatles in 1962 and they sang for 45 minutes

    • AdamAddict

Saw the show at Nokia. Adam was worth waiting for and was absolutely incredible. Unbelievable voice, unbelievable stage presence, unbelievably sexy, one of the best times of my life

  • Trisha

Fantastic and spot-on review, Michael! Sums up my feelings about the Wilkes-Barre opening night I was fortunate enough to attend (minus WLL unfortunately, but we did get BROKEN OPEN). Agree completely about Allison and Orianthi (O’s mad guitar skills notwithstanding, their sets should be reversed, both chronologically and in # of songs).

  • IMPEACH OBAMA

This sickening freak is what’s wrong with the nation. He is almost as bad as the worthless One-Termer destroying our Gulf Coast, our troops, and our nation.

    • LOL

Did you get lost on your way to the Faux News website little boy?

    • nodnarb

IMPEACH OBAMA, I’ve missed you since Lost ended. How have you been? Having a nice summer?

    • KinCa

      Hey IMPEACH OBAMA….you’re an idiot!!

    • @impeach whatever

and you should go back to the cave you came out from.

    • idolcritic

You need to get your head examined and the facts straight before leaving such an idiotic comment. You must be on the ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’ team…………. As for Adam, eat your heart out.

      • GinaBallerina

Awww, but one can be on the “drill, baby, drill” team AND the Adam team! : )

    • Arielle

LOL so BP made a terrible mistake and their oil rig blew up and it’s Adam Lambert’s and Obama’s fault???
      What are you, twelve?
Don’t strain your two or three remaining brain cells too much by thinking about Obama or they might kill themselves out of frustration, too…

    • silk

With a name “IMPEACH OBAMA”, you probably is a racist and a bigot!

    • queenrosered

Your name says it ALL, Obama hater…no doubt also a self-loathing homophobe…another closeted right-wing, married gay man, no doubt, lol!

    • AZLadyWolf

No, ignorance and bigotry are what’s wrong with this nation, and YOU are a PRIME example.

    • yourthefreak

hateful a__holes like you are the REASON WAR EXISTS

    • Joely

The closet cases are the most fun, aren’t they?! How in holy hayul did you even FIND this article without seeing the words, “Adam Lambert,” clicking and then reading?? Come on out! The water’s fine!! (Not in the basement of your mama’s house where you live, I mean in the real world.)

    • G

No, dude, YOU’RE what’s wrong with this nation.

      • Pat

Wasn’t this a comment page about Adam Lambert. Not Obama and war! Chill

    • Troy

Why do people respond to trolls? Ignore them.

    • IMPEACH OBAMA

Romney-Petraeus in 2012. It WILL HAPPEN. Your One-Termer will serve prison time for his crimes against America.

    • Amy

So Impeach whatever ya name is? I bet my ass are a Kris Allen follower? Go and buy 1,000 of his CDs cause he just sold less than 800 this week!!!! No point trolling Adam’s stories anymore. You should get a job in a magazine and write more about your “boy”!

  • Aight Now

Nice review over-all…my only complaint is the stereotype of his fans. I hate to inform people, but he has fans ofall ages, shapes, races, sexual-orientation, etc. I’ve never seen such a diverse fanbase.

Believe or not, a lot of teens would rather hear real talent than say…Justin Beiber.

    • yeah

the problem is that those older women have the money to go to all Adam’s concerts, buy several albums and follow him everywhere he goes. While teens depends on their parents and college students like me can’t always travel across the country just to be in one of Adam’s concerts.

      • yeah

        correction: one no, several concerts.

    • guest

The media tends to ignore the more normal younger fans and concentrate on the few weirdos and crazy fans because they want headlines.
The truth is: Every band and artist has “normal” fans and fans who are total whackjobs.
It is right that the few weirdos make for better headlines but they’re the ones who will turn other people off of buying a ticket…

      • yeah

        lol you are right

      • karen

@guest What review were you reading….no where in his review does Slezak refer to any of Adam’s fans as weirdos, whackos or crazy and does not even imply that! And since when does “younger” ever mean “normal”? lol

  • momma bear

i was at the show last night and adam was phenomenal, alli was great and ori was better than expected but lacks charisma and stage presence….

  • maxxy

That sounds so awsome i wish i could have gone! pretty good review, but i’m kind of disappointed you were so interested in the crowds age at the biginning of the article, and no i’m not a defensive “old hag” just that’s all he mentioned i mean i’m in high school and i have some friends who like adam (yes we’re all girls). What we don’t deserve a mention? Believe it or not we do exist jezz

    • yeah

      tell me about it.

  • Angelraj

Great review, as usual, Michael. There is nobody that can touch Adam Lambert when it comes to vocals and showmanship. This guy has it all, and he is sexy as hell to EVERYONE! I am extremely proud of him, how he’s done all this on his own terms. (And I agree that Allison’s opening set should be longer as she is the superior performer).

    • todd

I think there are many people who are better than Adam Lambert in a lot of ways. Can’t you fans of his stop with the hyberbole and superlatives? You bore everyone to death except yourselves.

      • Fever

Name some. Then name some from Idol. LMaO. Yeah, ok.

      • Jenny

Come on, it’s not boring. It’s hilarious. Tons of old-timers claiming Adam is greater than Elvis and Michael Jackson combined. The comment section of any article about Lambert does not disappoint.

      • tmd

Right back at ya’ … Toddeeeo!!
