Katy Perry holds No. 1 spot on 'Billboard' Hot 100 singles chart, Mike Posner keeps rising

Katy-Perry-Mike-PosnerImage Credit: Robin Wong/PR Photos; Andy Sheppard/Redferns/Getty ImagesKaty Perry holds on to her No. 1 spot this week on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with her Snoop Dogg-assisted “California Gurls.” It’s her single’s third consecutive week at the top. The following three tracks on the chart all keep the same place they did last week. Usher‘s “OMG” stays at No. 2. B.o.B’s “Airplanes” holds at No. 3. And “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy is at No. 4.

Drake‘s Kanye West-produced second single “Find Your Love” leaps from No. 10 to No. 5 this week, while Ke$ha‘s “Your Love Is My Drug” stays at No. 6. Lady Gaga‘s “Alejandro” falls from No. 5 to No. 7.  Mike Posner’s single “Cooler than Me” cracks the top ten after eight weeks of steadily climbing the charts (and nearly a year after first popping up on our radar here). The pop upstart’s first single moves up from No. 14 to No. 8. Eminem’s “Not Afraid” slides back one spot to No. 9. And Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart” lands at No. 10.

Have you heard Posner’s new single? Do you think it has a shot at hitting No. 1?

I really don’t like Cooler Than Me. Its whispery and repetitive.

    • Maureen

I know. At first I thought his voice was kind of different and unique, but then after awhile it started irritating me.

      • Chichi

He has one of the worst voices I have ever heard, sounds as if he’s having an asthmatic episode.

    • lefty

      It’s a really really dumb/bad song.

  • LOL

    What a sea of crap.

    • S.O.

Makes me miss the 90s when the Top 40 had a variety of music happening.

  • Luc

I actually find Cooler Than Me is one of the best songs of the 2010 year… Better then the crap that landed at #1 “Fireflies” or Kesha -Miley Cyrus – Jonas Brothers – NIckelback -Simple Plan etc

  • Kevin

Oh yeah. “Cooler Than Me” is, along with “Airplanes” and, of course, “California Gurls,” as well as maybe “Ridin’ Solo,” the song of the summer. I don’t think there’s any chance it won’t hit No. 1.

  • Jethro

    Boycott Kanye! Nuf’ said.

    • Bruno

Why? Because of what he did to Taylor Swift? Who went on to capitalize on the incident by receiving awards that she did not deserve? She is in no what more vocally talented than Carrie Underwood. She is a sweet girl who is a good song writer who makes catchy songs. BUT she is a bad live performer with pitch problems. So why are we still mad at Kanye… Get over it. She has.

      • MC

is the taylor swift incident the only one you remember? because i certainly remember at least 3 or 4 more times where kanye made an a** out of himself at awards shows while completely disrespecting other people. maybe that’s why jethro is saying to boycott kanye, because he’s shown MULTIPLE times that he’s a crybaby a**hole who has no respect for his peers.

I am so sick of hearing about Kayne. So he messed up, what he did wasn’t that bad in the first place. I am not a fan of his, but still sheesh, get over it.

  • I’ll admit

The Katy Perry song is really catchy… I can’t help liking it.

    • Adam

I liked it too until someone pointed out that the chorus is a rip-off of the chorus of Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok.” Play ‘em both, they’re very similar. Wonder if the same songwriter did both, like the guy who did Beyonce’s “Halo” and then the sound-alike Kelly Clarkson song “Already Gone.” Between stuff like this and all the samples of old songs everyone uses, there’s not much originality in pop music these days!

      • chris

Hate to tell you but Tik Tok is using the same chorus many songs have over the year including 1983 hit by Madonna called Holiday

      • RyRyNYC

Actually… Tik Tok is ripped off New Kid’s On The Block’s The Right Stuff… the beat to the chorus is EERILY REMINISCENT of half the beat to the Right Stuff… especially the opening.

Eminem’s “Not Afraid” hasn’t picked up any mainstream radio play sicne its been yo-yo-ing in & out of the top 10 and with “Love The Way You Lie” with Rihanna being the #1 song on iTunes this week, its sure to debut top 5 on the Hot 100 next week esp. with many pop prgrammers jumping on the track since “Not Afraid” is just not a radio record like most of Marshall’s lead off singles tend to be.
Posner’s debut single was actually the not-so-radio-friendly “Drug Dealer Girl” and his label took down the EP that iTunes had for sale most of the winter, after his mixtape with “Cooler Than Me” was a free giveaway on iTunesU. (The “Cooler Than Me” video was also a free giveaway on iTunes last week, which of course helped the already hit song have more free promotion.)
I know that the EW writers copy the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 cover story basically every week, but do y’all have ANY love or taste in current pop music!? Its kinda sad y’all write for an ENTERTAINMENT mag and leave all the ENTERTAINMENT out of almost everything. I know I can’t eb the only person that feels this way. ANd Again….STILL NO MENTION OF THE NEW MAROON 5 SINGLE “MISERY” OR TOUR?! But a MJ post everyday this week leading up to the anniversary of his death!?? LAZY & EASY.

    • beb

Hey Phil! I totally agree with you on the Billboard copy-and-paste job that EW is giving us every week. Maybe they could look further down the chart and note some up-and-coming songs – Shontelle’s “Impossible”, which is steamrolling ahead and could hit the top 10 in a couple of weeks. Or, the reversal of Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” which apparently is now the follow-up to “Break Your Heart” (I initially thought it was going to be his duet with Ke$ha, “Dirty Picture”). Like the new Maroon 5 song and it should make a decent debut next week (not as big as Em and RiRi, though)…

    • Phil

Hey beb! Yeah, the folks over there have gotten REALLY lazy…maybe they’re all out waiting in line to get the new iPhone4…I wish Slezak would write more Music Mix pieces with Idol over. I really miss his music articles. I ride him for going overboard on ALL things Idol, but thats cause he is their ONLY writer who expresses his LOVE for whatever he is writing about that comes through in his items. And I miss his Top 10 iPod questions/blog items…So in his honor, here’s my current Top 10 Alternative to the Radio Hits iPod selections:
      1. Maroon 5 “Misery”
      2. DJ Earworm “Like OMG Baby”
      3. Sugar & Gold “Bodyaches”
      4. Kylie Minogue “All The Lovers”
      6. Faithless “Not Going Home”
      7. Alexis Jordan “Happiness” Wideboys Radio Mix
      8. Paradiso Girls “Who’s My B!tch”
      9. Kelly Rowland “Commander”
      10. M.I.A. & Jay-Z “XXXO” FultonYard / WaltBoogie Remix
      11. Sophia Fresh Feat. T-Pain “This Instant”
      12. Detail Feat. Lil Wayne, T-Pain & Travie McCoy “Tattoo Girl (Foreva)”
      13. Kardinal Offishall Feat. Akon “BodyBounce”
      14. Natasha Bedingfield “Touch”
      15. Uffie Feat. Pharell Williams “A.D.D.S.U.V.” Armand Van Helden Vocals Remix

Don’t care what ANYBDY says about Kanye. His new song ‘Power’ is all that. Gotdangit, he’s KILLIN’ that ish!

    • DGD

I know. Isn’t it a shame that the radio is playing Gucci Mane and Drake instead of that?

  • Catlin

I was listening to Tik Tok on one radio station yesterday and then changed it after it was done to another station. I said to myself Tik Tok again? But it was California Gurls. Airplanes is probably my favorite song in the Top 10 right now.

  • tom

so i went and listened to california girls and tik tok again…totally different vibe…nothing is original anymore but give the girl (perry) credit….it is a good summer song

  • The Daw

Katy Perry and Ke$ha are well-known friends (they’ve appeared in photoshoots together, and Ke$ha was in the I Kissed a Girl video), so I highly doubt you’re not supposed to realize that riff is the same. My assumption was that it was intentional and meant to be obvious.

  • Adam D

I think that Mike Posner’s “cooler than me” is a great song and could break the Top 5, it’s still not played as much as Katy Perry.

I like it, hope for more big stuff from Mike

    http://www.mikeposner.com for more from him!

  • E-Hustle

I wonder can Eminem’s I Love The Way You Lie make it on the Hot 100 without even being an official single? It’s been #1 on iTunes since Monday. Anyone know if it is getting alot of radio play? I don’t listen to radio, always have my ipod touch hooked up in the car.

I must say, outside of the song W.T.P the entire Recovery album is amazing.

  • Zoe

“california gurls” is lame as hell. katy sounds like a dying cat.

  • Dave

“Cooler than Me” is one of the worst songs I have heard in a long time. Sometimes I really can’t believe how bad the musical tastes of the general public are. It’s sad. I’m almost ashamed that Mike Posner is from my hometown.

    • Kath

He went to Duke, enough said.
