Jack Johnson's latest tops Billboard's album chart

jack-johnsonImage Credit: Hilary WalshJack Johnson tops Billboard‘s album chart this week. His latest set, To The Sea, debuts big with 243,000 copies sold. It’s the third No. 1 album of his career. Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 hops up a spot to No. 2 with 52,000 units sold. Glee: The Music, Volume 3: Showstoppers slides back to No. 3, selling 45,000 copies.  At No. 4, Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now holds steady selling 41,000 units.

The next two stay in the same spots they held last week. Usher‘s Raymond v. Raymond is at No. 5 with 35,000 albums sold. And Lady Gaga’s The Fame is at No. 6 with 33,000 copies sold. Carole King and James Taylor’s Live at the Troubadour jumps up two spots with 25,000 units sold. It’s No. 7.

The next highest entry on the chart is Taio Cruz‘s debut offering, Rokstarr. The album’s Ludacris-assisted lead single, “Break Your Heart” was a major hit at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart. But that success didn’t lead to a decent opening week for his full album. It arrives at No. 8, selling 24,000 copies. American Idol alum Clay Aiken’s Tried & True comes in at No. 9 with 22,000 copies sold. And closing out the top 10, Ke$ha‘s Animal lands at No. 10 with 20,000 copies sold.

Happy Jack Johnson’s album came it at No. 1? Are you surprised Cruz did so poorly? Talk to us.

Today (June 9) Billboard announced that “California Gurls,” Perry’s first single from her forthcoming album Teenage Dream, will be the No. 1 record on their Hot 100 singles chart tomorrow. It moves up from No. 2, replacing Usher’s will.i.am-produced “OMG.” This is Perry’s second No. 1 single. Her first was 2008′s raunchy “I Kissed a Girl,” which held the top spot for seven weeks.

Check back with us tomorrow for a full Billboard Hot 100 recap. Are you a fan of Katy’s Golden State anthem? Do you think “California Gurls” will stay at the top as long as “I Kissed a Girl” did?

Justin Bieber tour openers Burnham: The next Hanson?

BurnhamThree apple-cheeked siblings with small-town roots, pop-rock dreams, and a jaunty two-syllable surname? Familias Jonas and Hanson, meet your latest Band of Brothers inductees: Burnham, the Vermont-bred trio slated to open the second leg (Sept. 14-Dec. 23) of tween dream Justin Bieber’s North American My World tour.

Like the brothers Jonai, Burnham is fronted by its youngest member, 14-year-old Forrest (guitarist Alex is 18, bassist and keyboardist Andre, 16); and like Oklahoma’s Hanson, the boys’ sound is unabashedly MMM-boppy. They’ve also garnered a host of big names for production on their fall debut, including OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, Good Charlotte’s Benji Madden, and Rihanna collaborator Brian Kennedy (he also co-wrote Chris Brown’s “Forever”).

Will they capture the rapturous attentions of the Bieber be-fevered girl nation? Judge first single “Catch Me If You Can,” after the jump: READ FULL STORY »

Kanye West to perform at the BET Awards: Will this be his big comeback moment?

kanye-westImage Credit: Roger Kisby/Getty ImagesFor the first time since Taylorgate at MTV’s Video Music Awards last September, Kanye West will be hitting a major awards show stage. This morning BET announced that West will perform at the BET Awards on June 27. The last time West appeared on TV was the day after the VMAs to rap his verse on Jay-Z’s “Run This Town” alongside Rihanna and apologize for his gaffe on the premier episode of Jay Leno’s The Jay Leno Show. Since then he’s been pretty low key, working on his next album in Hawaii. Last week he released the as-yet-untitled LP’s first single “Power.” So far it has drawn critical acclaim and excitement.

West’s a dynamic performer, known for pulling out all the stops. But some are still iffy on whether or not he’s fit for the big stage yet. Are you ready to see him perform again? Think he’s going to do anything outlandish? Let us know.

Katy Perry vs. Lady Gaga: Did she really slam the 'Alejandro' video for 'blasphemy'?

gaga-katy-perryImage Credit: Perry: Bob Charlotte/PR PhotosWhile we’re still trying to figure out just what the heck is going on in Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” video, her fellow pop star Katy Perry has already formed a strong opinion — maybe. “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke,” Perry tweeted yesterday, not long after the video premiered. Perry’s tweet didn’t name names, so we can’t say for sure what she was talking about, but many are interpreting her words as a shot at the upside-down crosses, edible rosary beads, sexy nun outfits, and other risque religious imagery that Gaga employs in the “Alejandro” clip.

Katy Perry’s reps have not yet responded to our request for clarification on the subject of the tweet heard ’round the world. It’s hard to imagine what else she could have been referring to, though, unless she just coincidentally walked past a sacrilegious street performer on the same afternoon that Gaga’s video debuted. Possibly worth remembering: Before she got famous by singing about bi-curiosity, Perry was a pastor’s daughter making contemporary Christian music.

What do you think of this controversy? Is the “Alejandro” mini-movie really any more blasphemous than, say, your average Madonna video from the ’80s? Watch it again after the jump to refresh your memory and/or be offended all over again.

Keith Richards: Music's most influential character?

Keith-RichardsImage Credit: Greetsia Tent/WireImage.comWhile assembling EW’s 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years issue, we talked to many artists about the real and fictional figures who inspired their creations. One name that came up repeatedly was that of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards — a personage so larger-than-life, so legendary in rock history, that he could almost qualify as a mythical character himself.

Here’s Johnny Depp, talking about what he drew on to play Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films: “I was thinking of pirates as rock’n'roll stars, so Keith Richards was already in my mind. Then came Pepe Le Pew. And then Lee Marvin’s performance in Cat Ballou.” Or animator Jamie Hewlett on Gorillaz‘ nefarious cartoon bassist: “Murdoc is an amalgamation of a Scooby-Doo baddie, Keith Richards, and Baron Von Frankenstein. Just the unpleasant villain of the band.” If you want to create a memorable character for stage, screen, page, or even record, it seems you could do worse than to model your work on good old Keef. Nada Surf frontman Matthew Caws on 'if i had a hi-fi' (and surviving the agony of Laffitte): A Music Mix Q&A

Categories: Indie Rock, Nada Surf, Q&A

Nada-SurfImage Credit: Autumn de WildeToday is the day for all you Nada Surf fans to dash out to your local independent record stores and pick up a copy of if i had a hi-fi! The venerable trio has compiled a collection of covers from unexpected artists like Depeche Mode (“Enjoy the Silence”) and Kate Bush (“Love and Anger”), all handled in characteristic peppy-pop style. There are some inside jokes, too, like Spoon’s “The Agony of Laffitte,” an ode to the end of days at Elektra Records — and a couple of disappointing executives Nada Surf themselves knew all too well.

We sat down with frontman Matthew Caws backstage at Sasquatch(!) over Memorial Day weekend to get his thoughts on reinterpreting the work of others, as well as discovering the unexpected upside — now seen clearly in hindsight — of being dropped by a major label after one really popular song.

Entertainment Weekly: So why a covers record?
Matthew Caws: Because Louie Lino, our keyboard player, couldn’t come on our final tour for Lucky. He’d just built this recording studio in Austin, and he really needed to get it off the ground. And during the course of the 30-second conversation we had about this, like, “Can you do this tour?” “No,” I was like, “Is there anything we can do?” And he said, “Well, you could make a record here. That would help.” So I suggested a covers record, and then we went down there last September for three weeks and did it. Secretly, I wanted to avoid the eight-ball of coming home from tour for a while. Cause it’s not like we’re on this super tight album-tour-record-album-tour-record schedule — but kinda. I mean, I have other parts of my life, too, as an adult. The intent was to do it quick, cheap, without worrying too much. None of this happened. We took it as seriously as an album of our own. I think we just have one gear.

Lady Gaga premieres 'Alejandro' mini-movie: Watch it here

alejandroI can’t wait to hear Lady Gaga explain her latest video, “Alejandro.” Mostly because after watching it (twice!), I have absolutely no clue what’s going on beyond the obvious. The video starts with a bowl cut-sporting army of men marching in nothing but high shorts and boots. The scene switches to Gaga returning a small red pillowy gift with an “A” on it, presumably Alejandro’s heart, to a queen-like lady in black—also played by Gaga.  Later she strips down to her bra and panties to join the scantily clad men, now in underwear and black high heels, in their sleeping quarters for some dirty dancing.

The next outfit change features her most Madonna-esque look yet: black slacks and a matching bra with machine guns attached. The Fame Monster‘s latest clip concludes with a montage of war shots and a funeral. Unlike her last mini-movie, “Telephone,” this offering doesn’t have storyline that’s easy to follow. There’s more room for assumption and guessing. That said, watch the eight minute video after the jump and tell us what you think it’s about. Who died? What caused the war? Who gave those soldiers bowl cuts? I need to know!

Chris Brown denied entry to the U.K. due to criminal record

Chris Brown has postponed a tour of the U.K. after his visa was denied, Reuters reports. The decision was related to the singer’s felony assault conviction last year, in which he pleaded guilty to beating then-girlfriend Rihanna in February 2009. “We reserve the right to refuse entry to the U.K. to anyone guilty of a serious criminal offence,” a rep for Britain’s Home Office told Reuters. “Public safety is one of our primary concerns.”

Brown had planned to perform in Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, and London this week. Reuters says he has the right to appeal the Home Office’s decision. Brown’s label did not immediately respond to EW’s request for comment.
