U2, Dylan producer Daniel Lanois in intensive care after motorcycle accident

Categories:

daniel-lanoisImage Credit: Maury Phillips/WireImage.comRespected Canadian producer-artist Daniel Lanois has canceled all upcoming tour dates after a motorcycle crash in L.A. this past Saturday, a press release announced today. “Lanois suffered multiple injuries but is expected to be released from intensive care soon,” the release states. “Due to the severity of the injuries, Lanois…will be recuperating for the next two months.” He had previously scheduled a European tour for this July.

Lanois is best known for his close working relationships with the likes of Bob Dylan (Oh Mercy, Time Out of Mind) and U2 (The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, and more). He has also released several albums of his own material, and recently started a new trio called Black Dub. The press release says Black Dub “will release their debut album when circumstances permit.”

The Music Mix sends its best wishes for Lanois’ speedy and full recovery.

Eminem's 'No Love' leaks, features Lil Wayne, and samples Haddaway's 'What is Love'

lil-wayne-eminemImage Credit: Robyn Beck/AFP/Getty ImagesLast night (June 7) “No Love,” a song from Eminem‘s forthcoming Recovery set, leaked online. It features incarcerated rhymer Lil Wayne. Both spit venomous rhymes. I’ll get to those in a bit. More surprising is the beat their vocals are tracked to. Somehow producer Just Blaze transformed Haddaway’s 1993 pop dance track “What is Love” into a menacing cut with kicking bass. The obvious sample doesn’t seem like it required too much effort from Blaze and isn’t one of his best offerings. In his defense, Eminem isn’t the type to select beats like T.I.’s “Live Your Life” or Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got,” some of Blaze’s biggest records to date. He seems to prefer simpler, more open records to make sure his words are highlighted. Em’s no stranger to sampling. Back in 2000 producer Mark the 45 King gave him one of his biggest hits yet, “Stan.”  The Dido-sampling track about an overzealous fan was a quaint record that allowed Eminem to tell his eerie story.

On “No Love,” Wayne and Em choose to go the aggressive route. Each takes a turn letting out their anger with intricate lyrics, making up for the lackluster beat. Referring to his jail sentence in the first verse, Wayne asks “Okay, you want me up in a cage? Then I’ll come out in beast mode.” Eminem comes in after rapping about how all his so-called peers need to be yanked off the stage. “Where the f— is Kanye when you need him,” he quips. “Snatch the mic from them. I’m gonna let you finish in a minute. Yeah, that verse was tight. But I’m trying to spit the greatest verse of all time.”

Have you heard “No Love” yet? What do you think of it? Does the beat serve its purpose? Or is it just boring? Let us know.

Christina Aguilera sings for 'Today' show: Watch here

Categories: Christina Aguilera

christina-aguileraImage Credit: Dave Allocca/Startraksphoto.comChristina Aguilera stopped by 30 Rockefeller Center this morning for the Today show’s latest live summer concert. After her performance at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday failed to generate much buzz, this was another opportunity to get fans excited about her new album, Bionic, which arrived in stores today. So how did she do?

Before performing, Aguilera chatted briefly with NBC’s Matt Lauer. Turns out their respective kids have very different tastes in music: Her son likes cutting-edge electro, his is more of a Sesame Street guy. Then it was on to the stage. Aguilera opened with an abbreviated take on Bionic‘s title track, followed by current single “Not Myself Tonight.” Neither performance blew me away — ultimately, these just aren’t particularly memorable songs — but she was definitely in better voice than she was on Sunday. Later in the broadcast, Aguilera reached back to 2002-2003′s “Fighter” and “Beautiful.” Both tunes sounded as fun and empowering as ever. Whatever you think of her new work, it was a reminder not to underestimate Aguilera’s back catalog.

Did you watch Xtina on Today? What did you think? Check out her first interview/performance segment after the jump.

R.I.P. Marvin Isley

Categories: In Memoriam, R&B

Caravan-Of-LoveMarvin Isley, bassist for the Isley Brothers, passed away Sunday morning from undisclosed causes at the age of 56. Though his name is best associated with his Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame-inducted family band, Marvin scored one of his biggest R&B hits as a member of another family band, Isley-Jasper-Isley, thanks to 1985′s smooth, summery “Caravan of Love.” Enjoy that classic video (and its totally amazing cross-cultural vibes) after the jump, and leave your memories of Isley in the comments. Gorillaz and the Pixies latest to cancel concert appearances in Israel

pixies-gorillazImage Credit: Jamie Hewlett; Chapman BaehlerTel Aviv’s Pic.Nic festival will have to do without several bands this week, including second-night headliners the Pixies, Billboard reports. A rep for the iconic alt-rock foursome provide EW with the following statement:

It is with great regret that we announce today of the Pixies’ decision to cancel their appearance on June 5 in Israel at this time.

The decision was not reached easily, and we all know well the Israeli fans have been waiting for this visit for far too long.

We’d like to extend our deepest apologies to the fans, but events beyond all our control have conspired against us. We can only hope for better days, in which we will finally present the long awaited visit of the Pixies in Israel.

The band did not specifically acknowledge last Monday’s Israeli commando naval raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship, which resulted in nine deaths and sparked a significant global outcry, though Billboard says the festival’s organizers have acknowledged that the band’s decision is related to those events.

Damon Albarn’s virtual band of cartoon misfits Gorillaz also pulled out of the event, as did UK nu-rave outfit Klaxons. Upcoming concert appearances in Tel Aviv from the likes of Elton John, Jethro Tull, DJ Shadow and Mike Patton are still scheduled to go on as planned.

'Newsies' dance to 'Bad Romance': Watch here

What does Newsies, the 1992 cult musical about pint-sized print media peddlers, have to do with Lady Gaga? Well, nothing — and yet, somehow, oh so much. That much is clear from the clip you’ll find after the jump, in which a dance sequence from Newsies is matched seamlessly to a soundtrack of Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

If that description hasn’t already inspired you to click play, nothing will. So check it out already (clip via Jezebel) and let us know what you think of this video mash-up.

Prince celebrates 52nd birthday with a new song, 'Hot Summer': Hear it here

Categories: Music, New Stuff, Prince

Prince-2007-guitarImage Credit: Theo Wargo/WireImage.comOn the occasion of his own 52nd birthday, the Artist Currently Known As Prince has crafted himself a musical gift to honor the occasion, unveiling the song “Hot Summer” this morning on a Minneapolis radio station (via twentyfourbit).

Will it blow your assless yellow pants off? Unlikely, but it’s not bad; kind of a “Little Red Corvette” lite, with a touch of J. Geils Band riffage and a soupcon of the wouldn’t-you-like-a-refreshing-beverage-right-about-now? sunniness of those “I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke” ads. Stream it after the jump:

Lee DeWyze: The inside story of his first two CDs

Categories: Lee DeWyze

lee-dewyzeImage Credit: Gilbert Carrasquillo/FilmMagic.com Can’t wait to hear the first CD from Lee DeWyze? Then there’s good news—you don’t have to. In fact, the American Idol champion has already put out two albums: 2007′s So I’m Told and this year’s Slumberland, which hit stores in January, as DeWyze was setting out on the path to Idol glory.

Both albums were released by the Chicago-based indie label WuLi Records, which was established in 2005 by producer-drummer Ryan T. McGuire and guitarist Louis Svitek, who has played with industrial-metallers Ministry, amongst others. McGuire and Svitek also backed DeWyze on the two CDs. “I’ve been working with Lee since he was 17,” says Svitek. “A friend of mine was like, ‘Hey, I met this young kid, and I think he’s somebody you’d like to work with.’ Lee played some stuff for me, and we just started working together from there. I really think eventually Lee would have become noticed no matter what. But he approached us right after we recorded Slumberland and was like, ‘I want to do American Idol.’ We released him from his contract and off he went.”

Svitek says that the last couple of months have been a surreal experience. “I’ve never watched American Idol before, and I watched every single episode to see how he was doing,” admits the guitarist. “I did vote for him, and so did my girl. She voted for him constantly. He deserved to win.”

The label boss says that he has had no contact with RCA—Lee DeWyze’s new record company—but that he remains in touch with his once, and possibly future, musical collaborator. “I met up with Lee a couple of days ago and he told us a little bit about what’s going on,” explains Svitek. “I know they’re going to try and get the best people they can to record on his album. They’re probably going to get some superstars on there. But if he wants someone who’s played with Ministry, all he has to do is call me up!”

I’ve embedded the Slumberland track “Stay” after the jump (as well as a video of DeWyze interviewed by our own Michael Slezak.) Give it a listen and tell us what you think. Does it tempt you to buy one of DeWyze’s pre-Idol CDs?

Dierks Bentley exclusive: Stream 'Bad Angel' featuring Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson here!

Dierks-BentleyImage Credit: Danny ClinchHere’s the last of our three exclusive Dierks Bentley streams, previewing Up On the Ridge, the “bluegrass-influenced” album Bentley drops tomorrow, June 8.

On Thursday, we brought you “Draw Me a Map,” featuring the soulful guest stylings of Alison “Grammys, Y’all” Krauss.

On Friday, you heard Dierks team up with former SteelDriver Chris Stapleton for “Fallin’ For You.”

Today, we’re streaming “Bad Angel,” one hell of a three-way with Miranda Lambert and Jamey Johnson. This one is all about vices, and as Miranda told me during this year’s ACMs, “They let me do the drinking verse, which was at my request.”

Give it a listen, and let us know what you think in the comments. Are you headed out to buy Up On the Ridge tomorrow? While you’re at it, let’s play a little fantasy management: Should more mainstream country artists take this kind of risk? Who would you like to see step outside the radio format next?
